Hi

Bought zx-5 2nd hand before xmas (thx Martin) and now getting round to playing with it. Yea yea, I know, but a house move and 2 kids under 3.....

Anyway, motor screws from my tc are too short and I can't see a part number in the manual I downloaded, can anyone advise? Will any 3x10mm screw suffice?

Also all the allen headed screws seem to be the same size, same as my motor screws for my TC3, are they 2mm as if I get bolt headed motor screws I thinks its worth investing in a decent allen wrench.

Sorry for the dumb questions and ta in advance

Welcome to the Lazer club!
The stock motor screws in the SP are 2.5mm, but ordinary M3 button head screws should have a 2mm hex.

Ok thanks, so does that mean the chassis screws are 2.5mm too?

the motor screws are an M3 thread, but the head is a 2.5mm hex drive. All the ZX5 screws are M3. The kit screws should be a 2mm hex drive head, so your new driver will be fine.

The button head and countersunk screws have a 2mm hex, the socket head motor screws a 2.5mm hex. The 2mm hex driver is fine!

Got it running tonight, fitted with orion carbon lipo and an oldish trinity d5, which I think is a 14x1. Blimey its fast and strong....ahem... Anyhoo, its left me with a couple of questions

Smallest pinion I had was a 23t from what I have read, thats a bit over geared for an outdoor track, any recommendations for a 14x1? I think spur is std kit one

On the subject of pinions, all the ones I have are 2nd hand and the grub screws are in bad shape. AE pinions from mt tc3 to be precise and I'm guessing I was given the wrong allen key as although it fits, when you try to tighten it up, it slips. Pinion came loose several times during the evening cos of this. So I want to invest in a couple of pinions and a decent driver - Am I right in thinking a std pinion driver is 1.5mm and basic rw pinions will all be metric? I think the owner of the tc3 may have mixed and matched pinion/grub and allen metric/imp.

Sorry if questions are basic!!!

PS Really can't believe how well that car goes, fair bit quicker than my last... PB Mustang with a demon 19x4 and sanyo 1200mah nicads:)

AE is not metric, nothing on my tc4 is. that would explain your std. sizings. I changed it to losi pinions. Same on my zx5 sp. the losi pinions imo have the best teeth and run the smoothest. I have never stripped a spur with a losi pinion.

1.5mm is standard for all metric pinions, Which is pretty much any made except AE.

Cheers, I'll order some losi ones and a 1.5mm driver then!!

any american pinion ( ae, losi etc) will have an imperial grub screw so stick with a rw one from your local shop or get a imperial driver to go with the ae/losi pinion or you will have the same problem again

Ok understood. Was looking at 20/21t pinions as I believe zx-5 has internal ratio of 2.5 and was looking at FDR of 9.5ish, does that sound reasonable??

I know nothing about internal ratios.
I know one thing about my laser - I run an 18t pinion with std spur and checkpoint 10x2's. Hope this helps.

P.S. Hope my gearing is right...
