Hi guys
I bought this one off CATS last week, and thought is begin a resto thread, seeing as the car needed a LOT of work, hence, a resto, not a quick rebuild.
On receiving the car, the first impressions were good, clean new chassis suspension components, new wishbones, but thats where the good ended, and the money pit began.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v642/ralphee/yz101.jpg
On a strip down, i noticed that both diffs were shot and very grubby/ rusty.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v642/ralphee/diff3.png
Lucky for me, ive managed to source parts for a full set of of new diffs.
The left rear driveshaft was badly bent, and all four shafts worn to thr point of excessive play, all new ones were ordered.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v642/ralphee/shaft.png
The rear bulkheadn and front were stripped on the underside, so new ones were needed, and also, the rear camber link, seems to have been stripped of thread, and hastily bodged up, yup, a new one ordered lol.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v642/ralphee/camber.png
This is how she lies now, awating a big box of parts to put it all right properly, many screws were bent, missing, and even chopped down on its original "resto" this is all being put right, to make this girl glorious as she one was.

As soon as some of the parts land, ill be updating the thread with the build, itll be quite different to how i recieved it, Masami shell in the pipe too.......this will be fun, although very costly!

Funny...I saw that YZ10 on the RC10 website....was meant to be a shelf queen I think. Doesn't look to be in too bad nick really.
Good luck with the rebuild. Hope it ain't too costly! I'll be posting mine at some point.

It doesnt look bad at all bud, its when you really get into it, the nightmare ensues lol, ive got many parts enroute now, so itll be almost 100% brand new, a proper restore i feel, not a casual glance over! It was a long way off a shelf queen, put it that way!

Hmmm.. I ain't so keen buying lots of parts although I had to shell out on some newish wishbones, shock towers and top deck. I recently bought some team Suzuki upgrade bling aswell!
I think with the other bits I've bought I'll have two rollers: one shelf ( but not queen) and the other for casual racing.
I'd really like to see how you get on!
The yz10 series are great pieces of kit!

NIP shafts were from France, most other parts from the US, a few parts have landed now, and im just waiting on another package and i can put his back to maybe a 95% new car, which will be nice.

Update, 100% new diffs.

New rear susp units and shafts, this whole back end is now all from NIP.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v642/ralphee/wishbones.png
Rear diff in, all new parts here too, sill waiting for a couple to land.

Starting to look like a Yokomo again hehe.

Itll be at least a 95% new car when im done, pristine clean ready for some period electrics, i cant wait, and all in all, im having some fun putting it back to mint condition.

Looking promising!
Like the team Suzuki wheel adapters
Are you going to use titanium screws where you can?
About electrics, have you thought what turn motor you'll install?
ralphee
20-05-2012, 10:49 AM
Not fitting titaniums no. Motor, havent really thought much on that yet, other than itll have to be period (Reedy/Yokomo) and not TOO hot, these diff parts arent too easy to track down.
Anybody got some decent YZ10 shell pics of that era, obviously ive seen all the Masami and Pavidis stuff, just want to see what other team jobs were out there i can maybe replicate.

This car brings back a few memories for me,if there's two cars I wish I'd kept hold of from my past it would be this one and my original pred. Loved them both:wub
Loving the wing too, they were virtually indestructible!!!

OK, bit of an update. Rolling chassis is now pretty much done, just a few screws i need to swap out, and the shock spring retainers too, original parts on the way, and its about done then.
This car now has a FULLY new drivetrain, its lovely lol.
I need to rebuild the shocks again, seems the "new" LOL, AE shocks i was sold (read, done up like a kipper) need new seals, as they pee oil out, yeah, i really was told they were new LOL, other than than, once they are done, its bodyshell and electrics time.

LOL, cheers mate, yeah still pulling that dent out, bit of filler, be good as new .
Gonna get my shell cut out this week, was going for a Masami job, but ive decided its a bit cliche on anything but a WCS, so opting for something very 90's, but still very fetching, more on that once i break out the airbrush.
Cant wait to run it now TBH, after all this, i really fancy breaking it in gently.

So have you used the original Yokomo pozi screws? with the heads that are made of butter?
ralphee
05-06-2012, 11:08 AM
Some screws are butter, as they were included in the NIP stuff i bought, but most screws are stainless and real tough, NON are rounded though lol.
Thanks for the comps guys, its been an expensive labor of love since i bought it, and its nice to know i can do a proper job, rather than a dodgy kids attempt at a rebuild LOL.
Looking forward to the new shell arriving now, i may go Masami, not sure now, just a shame these TBG shells are so lame, may sell this body TBH, so if anybody wants a painted YZ10 TBG shell, PM me.

Cant think of any parts that will interchange mate, its a pretty specific beast.
Your diffs are one to baby, spares are rare, i think youll have no worries wirh diff balls, but the main races, and thrust races are rocking horse poop.
The screws do snap too, but id bet you can remedy that with an M2 cap head, and put your own locking kink in it.
Just buy the toughened screws though, not the cheapie stainless.
Everything else, is a case of trawling Ebay daily and try pick up a deal, a lot of 94 parts get snapped up quick, but a short few months got me a nice tidy collection of NIP parts, so it is doable, just takes time.

That paint scheme is really a beauty!!! I remember wanting a YZ10 when It was released, maybe now I'll add it to the bucket list ;)

The shell is a Masami replica job painted by our own Jon Miller!
Ill be having another done soon for racing use, maybe the red one, it was the same design, but another of the Yokomo team?

Guys, need some advice. Took the YZ10 out today after building a pack and getting her all ready, hit a problem. Ive little to no braking!
Ive got the dial right up on the Cyclone, braking to 150 on my KO, and still theres hardly any there, its braking off load, but under load its like its a mild pull, im running a one way layshaft so rear brakes only, but even so, nothing really happening.
To save me taking it out and trying the Atom i have i have, anyone here reckon ive a brake FET out? I mean, there are three right??? Would a blown fet still give me some braking, or would it not work period?
If i have blown FETs, anyone here UK based able to fit new ones on the Novak Cyclone? Its been a long time since i mucked about with vintage electrics.

Yes mate, but tried it with spikes not long ago and not much better, really weird, i thought if a FET was blown id have zero, but i can dial it on and off with my KO TX.....there just weak.

The drive and braking FETs are in parallel, so if one is blown, you should still be able to run the others, provided no peripheral circuitry is damaged. You could try comparing the brakes on this to your 410, just as a sanity check. You might also try re-calibrating your Cyclone to your radio, making sure that you have no throttle/brake settings on the radio (i.e., expo at zero, EPA at 100%, etc.).

Buddy thanks for your input, mean to write you back. Solved the problem though, you'll never guess, a bit of slip on the rear diff, luckily id not gunned or used her hard, so the pully is cool, a quick strip down and adjust, bam, went like stink, super brakes too now, car had a nice shakedown and is now ready for some light indoor meets soon! I cant let it sit on the shelf now, i need to drive it!

Really enjoyed this build. I have a 94 to do, so hopefully I can get mine to a similar standard.
Glad to hear its been used for what it was made for and not just an ornament, sure you'll have lots of fun:D

Aww, thanks bud, its nice to inspire, DerbyDan was my main drive, even though he has a bells and whistles Masami lol, he spurred me on with his level of perfection.
I look forward to your 94 project, never tire of seeing these cars, and i have to say, id love to see your paint design on a YZ10 shell, would look killer!

Your yz looks spot on :) which shell did you settle for in the end?

24-07-2013, 07:08 AM
Thanks buddy. The shell and tray are Mr Lexan, which i think are OOP now?
At least, i dont think he's producing any shells at the moment. Ken Reith on here does a lovely YZ10 shell though, its softer than the OE ones, but the fit is superb.
I had one, but had a massive Faskolor fail (bloody hate that paint) so had to bin it, but ill be ordering another from Ken soon.
There are the TBG shells, which are great for quality, but a horrible tight fit due to shrinkage, i really struggled with the under tray hitting the servo extension area on the chassis, so that got passed on, shame, as they are nice shells, just way too small IMO.

Will be when all are ready buddy, once these are done and dusted itll be on to the '91 works bumpers.
Was pondering a rear stubby guard for the '94 too, just to give that exposed rear stab some protection from the usual scratches or rear end shunts, gotta protect these rare chassis plates i guess, have to see if i can make it work and worth fitting.

New racing shell for the '94. Was going to have Neil here paint this, but the shell was quite up to par, few warps i had to pull out, so didn't wan to throw more money at it (don't worry Neil, i still have work for you lol) to get it ready.
Decided to pick up the airbrush, threw some tape on it and make do with what little colors i had, isn't too bad seeing as its been a long time since I've painted, two little seeps, easily fixed with some period decals!

Are those bumpers made of kidex? I was thinking of making a skid plate for the rear of my xx4 but I don't know which material to use.

Yes Kydex buddy, and yup, I'm going to knock up a rear bumper for the YZ too, just to cover that protruding chassis nub that screams, delaminate lol.
