where can i find the comprehensive list of the parts needed?

e-mail Tony / RudeBits, they provide it on reciept of order.

Basically it's the rear end of the Lazer, front end of the RB5, a couple of modded transmission parts (modifications included in the conversion kit process), the conversion kit and a few bits of hardware (just screws mainly).

As I say, Tony will sort you out with all the info you need.

If anyone needs the list of parts I also have them so feel free to contact us if you wish. There is a complete list, and also a front end list which is useful if you are converting a 4wd.

Finally finished building, and installing the electrics.

Have temporary motor in at the moment, just waiting on the VST 7.5 to come back into stock..

Only difference to others ive seen, im running with Big Bores, plus ive flipped the rear tower assembley round... it gives better clearance and shock position in my opinion..

18-06-2012, 12:27 PM
A couple more pics...

Im just waiting on my bodyshell, which should be with me this week

Looking forward to giving it a run... cheers to Tony, Dave and Kev for help, pointers and of course the car!

Good idea on the rear shack mount Nic, I only have BB's too and as you say clearance is a little tight, I will be trying that.

Adam F
18-06-2012, 02:20 PM
Just a word of warning...I managed to snap the rear tower mount on landing with it mounted backwards.. (Donor had been built incorrectly by previous owner)

Not sure if its directly linked, but there are lots of stress raisers on the front of the mount (rear when reversed), wheras the rear (front when reversed) has a big smooth radius and lots of material to keep it strong..

njc11
18-06-2012, 04:24 PM
Hey, thanks for the pointers..

Ive run the shocks on the rear of my FS to try before and never had any issues with breakages.. fingers crossed it will be just fine

Looking good as always Nick.

I must admit that I just threw equipment in to mine as I pulled it out of the FS2 (didn't even desolder the motor wires) so there will be no pictures ... also ran it with the white overspray film as the colouring ;)

Car was great from the word go, once I'd worked out the equivelent oils in the AE range to what Kev runs that is (straight cst number comparison doesn't quite work)!

Mine is held on by the rearmost front bulkhead screws and the rear gearbox screws the front just tucks under the front bumper..... so dead easy to remove but very secure.

Hi. Yes, I do have a DB1. In fact my 'garage' looks decidedly similar to your 'K'
collection, but with the addition of an MP9.
The DB1 has still to have its maiden flight. Now that I have the shells back from Mike, I am ready to go. Unfortunately, not likely to be till 8th July at the
earliest. Need to be ready for Stotfold Regional on 22nd July.
Cheers, Brian

There are some fine looking cars out there and that's for sure!!
I feel that I should build myself a new car as I am still running one of the prototypes.....I sort of feel jealous very I see all those lovely painted new cars - LOL

On the set up side of things please follow the set up sheet sent out as some cars are certainly not on that.....that doesn't sound right - LOL
The set up sheet is a great base set up so bare that in mind is what I mean - especially ride heights etc etc Obviously everyone is going to try their own thing and we want to know about that but remember the set up sheet is a great base.....Kev, Dave and i are on that set up more or less everywhere......

If you haven't got it - please email me tony@rudebits.net

The majority of drivers do not run an undertray unless the weather is bad enough and they have to.
Kev and i run our trays above the chassis and simply tape the motor hole if its too wet.....some pics attached of Kevs car that I did for him at the last National (he is more than capable in doing himself of course but I think he was feeling lazy - LOL)

Hope the pics help you

I'm typically running mine with no tray, if the track is wet the full tray gets fitted under the chassis.

Was originally running the tray under to keep the chassis tip tip in case I ever sold it .... silly mistake ... why would you ever want to sell a DB1?????

My shock setup is as follows:

Front:
RB5 Top
Kit (1.3mm) 5-Hole Piston
Super Hard Orange Spring (XGS06)
40wt Losi
Long Ball End
Standard Shock Tower.

Rear:
RB5 Top
5-Hole X 1.4mm Piston
White Spring (XG012)
30wt Losi
Long Ball End

I also have a set of small bore shocks built, When I built the small bores up I set the car up with the small bores on one side & the big bores on the other. As a comparison the small shocks feel to react faster. the small bore shock feel ever so slightly softer too. but they feel pretty much the same to the touch.

I'm going to Bury tomorrow for some free practice, So i will get chance to test them both back too back.

Ran the DB1 indoors last night, runs really well with the big bores.
I found I was a little short of initial steering. But plenty mid corner.

I drooped down too one washer under the front inner ball stud.
And dropped a few teeth on the pinion, to a 24t

All I can say is the car was Awsome!! To say it was its dirt propped meeting I'm very impressed!!

RogerM
05-09-2012, 11:41 AM
TomTom - assume that if you are using the standard (non-WC) front tower you are using the tall (RB5 spec) shop tops but the standard (not long) lower rod ends! If you are using the longer rod ends you will have waaaaayyyyyyyy too much front droop and that might explain why your having to run such heavy front springs.

Just a thought :)

coleman758
05-09-2012, 11:51 AM
I run the Normal front tower, small ball ends & Short caps.
After playing around with all 3 this seems to be the best.

Running BB shocks too, just dremel the edge of the tower for extra Clearence.

I run the car Sunday, on mildly bumpy astro.
All I can say is it was pretty near perfect.

coleman758
05-09-2012, 12:01 PM
Also,
I run kit 5-hole pistons in the front, with 40wt Losi Oil, and Orange XG06 springs

RogerM
05-09-2012, 04:11 PM
Sounds sensible to me Coleman :)

I prefered the longer caps but that is what makes the Kyosho stuff so brilliant ... however you want your car to feel ... they have a part for that ;)

tomtom
05-09-2012, 07:02 PM
I tried a lots of things on the RB5 platform since the first Vega RB5.

Always found SB better until I tried those Losi front springs. These are quite hard and may be fine tuned but allow to keep fast direction changes and good steering.

I used RB5 long tops and short ballcups and checked I was about the same as SB. I also use 25mm screws on top to clear the tower (but bent some on hard floors).

More droop on the rear is better Roger ?

That might not be the best setup but it's mine and the car is totally dialed for my driving and that's something :woot:

coleman758
05-09-2012, 08:08 PM
Everyone else's setup is abit immaterial,

Yep that would make sense, Get hold of some RB5 wheels, Cut the inner bead down, and run Low Profile cut staggers.

The car will be really bad with those on.

You running it on Saturday at west bridgford Rich?(weather dependent of course)

I had a go with Pete's at RHR last summer on a Wednesday night and after about two laps I was hooked.......would be the two wheel drive of choice for me but unfortunately I can't afford one myself but I'm sure you'll love it.

Nice one !

Since the rebuilt I've used mine a lot.

I would advise anyone running one to try a different front end at least once.
Let me explain: Most of us buildt it with a WC front end. This front end got the longer wishbones and shortest hinge pins holder. On the other hand original RB5 got the widest holder and shorter wishbones. SP in between and RB6 block may be of use too, a little wider than the WC.
To summarize what I felt, a shorter block with the same wheelbase (or almost) will be more agressive than a larger one.

Broke a WC 'bone, changed the whole front to RB5 and liked it a lot. It felt easier overall and more stable/less brutal. A bit less steering on tight section where the DB looks like a 1/12th turning but not much and was easier on power and on high speed corners entry. I have to work more on it and compare but it might be a nice setup tool to ease the car yet kept all its properties.

For grippy fingers like mine it might help when the car will be too on the edge without a huge setup change.

The chassis did rolled more side to side but safely and it was the longer block one. SP2 might a good in between choice (RB6+SP 'bones too).

On high grip dry astro I would maybe still use the WC.

Great looking cars here, mines in process of a rebuild. Was going to be sold, but nope. I'd part with my RB6 first if I had to give up a 2WD car.

Cheers fellas for the compliments and thanks to tomtom for that info.

Iain, what length rear shock bodies are you running to use that much preload on the rear springs ? You might need to check things there.

Learned a lot. Three different lengths of shock bodies, two different tops and three different lengths of eyelets just for the small bore shocks. Two different front towers, several different driveshafts too. It's a bit of a minefield if you aren't building from new yourself.

I don't know when I get home later I will measure them all,I did think it was quite a lot of pre load

Ok. As I learned from tony, the bodies at the back should be 38mm. I'm not up to speed with all lengths of shock shaft available but the std length shaft for the 38mm bodies are the 50mm ones.

Also check your driveshafts. You should have 62.5mm ones with a blue spacer on the inside of the hub. They have 62.5 etched on the bones.

That might be because you are using the alloy gearbox top. I think they mount the tower higher.

na the alloy top is the same as the plastic one . its because the shocks had the dead flat shock cups on them ....

All sorted, just changed the rear spring cups, they were flat ones, put some deeper ones on, thanks highlander

Ali shock mounts are the same height as the pre fs tower mounts.

The FS tower mounts are 1.5mm taller

i seem to make the alloy mounts making the tower a tad lower not higher

fs mount and tower on left

Looks good Gareth!

I can't quite tell from the photo but it looks like you have put heatshrink on the speedo solder tabs. This isn't a good idea as they are the heatsink on the Tekin.

Kev,

I have just put a bit of heatshrink over the solder to make it look nice and neat. The rest of the terminals are not covered up. Is it worth uncovering the solder joints as well?

Yeah I would, it's probably ok but The more surface you cover up the less effective it will be at getting rid of the heat.
