View Full Version : SHY's Paint
Just thought I'd make a tread where I can gather up my paintworks.
I'm in a much lower league than some of the true artists on here! But I nevertheless find great joy in trying new paint schemes. As I see it it's a very important part of the enjoyment of this hobby of ours!
Of course you can pay people to paint for you, but I really recommend to give it a shot yourself! Start off simple and try to improve! It's very revarding and fun once you get the hang of it! And you can get great results from more simple schemes and good use of stickers too! I always prefer cars/painjobs that look good & fast ON the track! Not like a flower painting
I very very seldom paint for others. Not that I wouldn't like to, there's just not enough time
I hope it may be of inspiration to others!
Feel free to comment!

Some really nice paint schemes there Shy !
I really like the 8th on road cars and the shells you've done ( I'm yet to paint one of those ), I like the Puma one, reminds me of the Brawn cars. And the BAR Frog is cool !
Too many good ones to mentioned though, really nice work, looks tight and crisp !
Thx Ian! I did it before Brawn actually :p
At least I've learned something since I first bought an airbrush back in 1995
This is one of my very first paintjobs:
http://www.oople.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=39161&d=1340261100
And this was SOOO advanced for me back then :)
http://www.oople.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=39162&d=1340261100
Being a total nerd, I even painted my crappy Vauxhall
http://www.oople.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=39163&d=1340261100
This is a picture from 2005, with a line up of most of the shells I had then "used up" since 1995  After 10 years of hard work I finally won the national championship in 2006, so this is "the path there"...
Here's a video of them too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kc87-q7rzY
There's some things you should know as to 1:8 TR shells Ian:
They are much larger = uses a lot of paint & you need big nozzles. And seal it VERY well, especially on the exhaust side.
The shells sometimes have a very short life. 1:10 off-road shells can last for years on end, as it sits well protected "inside" wheels, towers and wing. Whilst these onroad shells take all the beating head on. And imagine going full flat at 110 km/h, hitting some slight debris on the track >> takeoff... fence...
Typically the shells you've spent the most time on do harakiri on the first lap. And the ugly ones never want to die
Being incredibly fast, a simpler, clean design with "flowing lines" in the speed direction look best on the track. Too much going on looks stupid on track. I really also recommend some kind of "triangle" on the side, making the car look "cone formed" / taller at the back. With a horisontal line it looks kinda rear heavy and strange.
A good advice is to do some simpler "practise shells" and a full blown "A final shell". But with a good resemblance. The italians do this. Or even one only for the Concour'd Elegance competition at big races. Some are just a shame to waste.
Also make sure they are cut out before painting, as they are a paint to cut & fit when painted first, as the shells for instance from Protoform are not marked correctly (the different brands have different layouts).
Cheers
Nice pics my friend, thanks for sharing! That "path pic" is great
The vid is not showing.
Struggling with that vid... try again tomorrow, it's on Youtube but I cannot get the link to work for some strange reason :(
EDIT: All good now! Btw notice my very first shell, which I bought pre-painted from the shop in 95 (Enneti brand). Only the last couple of years I've seen pre-painted shells in the shops again (Blitz). Notice also the large "L" on my first shell  A fellow racers after a couple of seasons once asked me why I stopped using it
When painting my first shell I of course had to do the CLASSIC beginner mistake... going for all black... >> everybody crashes into you as they cannot see you on the black asphalt :lol::lol: -And you're being explained by the pros very carefully how great they find your choice of colours...
Oh, and merci Gayo!

Wow - awesome thread - I love the line of shells up to 2005 !
Amazing that you kept them all.
Some great paint jobs and nice techniques - I love the older tamiya stuff - I was thinking of doing a 'Homage' to the Tamiya Frog on one of my own shells - Pink & White - 'No Guts No Glory' etc :)
Thx!
Yeah, they took of a lot of space in my garage. My plan was to do this when I'd finally won my 1st national title, then throw them all in the bin... it took a while longer then first expected
I really like putting old vintage cars on stereoids a bit :wub Have you guys seen Tanatwo's work? (japanese)
If not >> http://www93.sakura.ne.jp/~time-tunnel/ (http://www93.sakura.ne.jp/%7Etime-tunnel/)
Very happy with the B.A.R. Honda cars, currently I'm working on this project (runner):
Good'ol B44
B-Max4 II cab forward shell, love the lines on this one, lots of cools vents
Vodafone McLaren 2012 stickers & paint (from revolutionshop_fr on ebay)
And of course a Futaba 3VCS with McLaren skin to go ;) (customgraphics / DMS)
Would be very cool with chrome all over, but I'll go for the silver. The chrome has a tendency to peel off over time (and lots of impacts)... I'll limit the chrome to the window lines only, and try to back with white in stead of black this time. Blitzboy told me that would be better. I'll also try cleaning as a pre-prep with blue Jif only, not alcohol as I've been doing for a long time.
Any other tips for making chrome stick better? I use the Spaztix aerosol for this.

Thx boss!
Do you have rattle cans with chrome? Better stick than Spazstix?
A little update on my McLaren project:
This is the first time ever that I have applied the decals first. But I saw this as the best solution here, as I'm going for the easy route. Being a mere mortal with no plotter or skills to "reproduce" all the decals as paint :)
The stickers are made for 1:10 F1 cars (Tamiya I guess), so it takes a little creativity to adjust them to off-road, but no biggie :)

Btw you pros, do you have a good advise as to a felt pen I can use when drawing on the outside? Especially with film on it's hard to made that pen work... I've tried overhead, CD marker (too thick), others... but none so far has worked very well. They write for a short while, then need to be used on paper to write again... (webshop link would be awesome)

There is no wrong way to do the shell mate, whatever needs doing to get the job done! I'm sure it will look fantastic.

Sorry, forgot about the marker pen.
I would recommend either Edding 8404 aerospace marker pen or Staedtler permenant marker pens
Jon
Thx Jon! I'll try one of those! Also just ordered one of your surface preps.
I'm sure solvent based is good, but I really prefer to stay with water based for the airbrushing. So a can is good for chrome for me :)
But is solvent based via airbrush more sticky than from a rattle can?
Btw how come you have a norwegian name??? "Jon" is the way we write it... being british(?) shouldn't you be named "JoHn"?
Btw2: I see I'm only 1 post ahead of you!!! Tight championship this!!!

I see that buddy, thank you. (although I think Mustit may have some too)
I cannot say the differences, all I can say is that my chrome is good.
It is actually Jonathan so just abbreviated :) Although I do have Norwegian relatives, great, great grandparents or something like that
One of those little post whores are you? :woot:
Kinda embarassing to take so long, but here it is!
3x small kids take most of my spare time...
Very happy with the result! My trusted old B44 will now go into retirement with these new clothes on. I'm getting an XB4 to take over. But I'll do more of these paint schemes, not very hard to do when using these stickers!

Where it now lives - can you spot the radio and car?
So I decided to go for a 1:1 paint scheme look. Being a F1 and McLaren fan the choice was obvious.
But it got me thinking... why don't we do this all of us? I mean most competition RC cars these days have kinda derived from the old 'goal' as to resembling a full scale racing car. We have nice enough paint jobs but it's a bit 'off' when you think about it - flames and splash patterns, very colorful. Plus stickers of the brands we PAID for. 99% of us are not sponsored so why do we advertise for free for them?
I encourage more to do full scale lookalikes - it's cool and it'll make it more interesting IMO to watch for the general public http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/icon_smile.gif Imagine how cool it'd look if all cars were a copy of a full scale racing team!!!

I like the scheme on that, very nice.
I tend to agree with you about the on road cars being more like "scale" versions with real world paint but the off road ones not so much. There aren't really any off road races shown on commercial tv channels in this country. We have normal rally but neither the 10th buggies or the 8th "rally cross" buggies resemble the full size race cars we see.
The old Baja type buggies that take part in desert racing are much more like some old Tamiya's than todays clean lines of the Durango's or any other shell out there.
I fully get your point but I think a lot of the off road cars are painted in bright scheme's to stand out on track.
Thx guys! :D
I get your points too. Just a bit bored with the beaten path that's all. And they can still be made bright
