Cat SX3 Layshaft Issues

Okay chaps, here's one for you.

Having purchased a lightly used Cat SX3, I'm in the process of stripping the car down for a full rebuild. I was preparing the rear diff, belt and upper layshaft and it appears that I have a tight spot every quarter turn of the layshaft. Has anyone experienced a similar issue?

Have you checked the bearings, is this with the belt on or off?

Yeah, I've checked and exchanged the bearings. It only goes tight under load I.e with the belt on at the right setting.

I'm still thinking of alternative explanations, but I keep coming back to the layshaft?!

Any dirt in the pulleys of it somtimes dirt gets in the teeth and builds up causing a tight spot

Im gonna organise a replacement layshaft and take it from there.

Eh, the saga continues....!

Having received the new layshaft today, I popped it in and it's no better. I would tend to suggest its the bearings, but after swapping the bearings three times, It's just as bad with each one.

Now, as they'd say up in Scotland "I'm no dafty", but I can't see to understand what is causing the issue. Surely all my bearings can't be fooked?

As an ex Team Driver from early T/C days I'm deeply confused.... :bored:

Any last ideas before I go out and buy new bearings?

Isnt this just the old "square layshaft" issue that plagued the forums on the release of the SX3?

If it is this then the two fixes are:
- permanent fix = dab of threadlock onto the layshaft where the centre bearing goes on (essentially threadlocking the bearing onto the layshaft so it cant rock and cause the stickiness you describe)

- more removeable fix but didnt seem to work for everyone = add a washer before the locknut goes on the layshaft. This just nips everything up a little tighter and seems to eliminate it.

Just watched your vid and its definately the layshaft click. Exactly the same thing happened to me.
The washer fixed it for me so fingers crossed for you too mate. :thumbsup:
