Not being connected with Dremel myself :D I can also recommend the latest Dremel Lithium-Ion. Not being nicad or nimh means it stays charged up while it sits in the toolbox and it's ready to go when you need it.

Used to always have a corded Dremel in my work toolbox in case it was needed as every cordless one I'd tried was nowhere near powerful enough, left it at home one day and picked up the Li-Ion one as I needed to use one. The corded one never comes with me any more.

Ditto what is said above.

10.8 Lithium Dremmel is ace!! Anything else is false economy IMHO, I've had alsorts of mains and battery tools which only ever last a few years. I use my Dremmel pretty much every week and it hasn't missed a beat.

emailed Dremel re spares and they say

Dremel discontinued the Cordless FreeWheeler Model 850 in 1994.
Supplies for most parts to include the battery pack have been exhausted.
We do have an exchange option. If you send the 850 to our service center we will replace with a 10.8V Lithium-Ion cordless Model 800 (link below) for $35.00 plus $4.00 shipping.

knew I'd had it a while

looks like I'll try the offer if Dremel UK is doing the same

measured the batteries and they are 32mm x 22mm 4/5 Sub-C

There appear to several 8000 models available 01,02 etc

what's the difference between them apart from the numbers?
