What kind of numbers are you getting at a meeting these days? In the late 80/90's it got to a point that we were turning away drivers. 120 per meeting was possible for a while. Drivers were coming from all over the north of England too. Good fun, but ultra competitive!

It would be good to build it back to those levels again. It should be possible - 10th electric buggies should be the most popular class in R/C racing - reasonably cheap, quiet and versatile.

Listen to me, I'm just considering having a go at this again and I'm already preaching. Please excuse me...

Good to hear from you again.......yes those were the days, I still remember our close race at SDRCC when they had a permanent track :) Funny how you used to beat me up here and then I would return the favour at Hetland Hall. I won my first National there when I stopped the 2 Jimmy domination in 1989 :thumbsup:

I have never really stopped racing off-road since 85 always having at least 1 race per year usually the Belgium GP which I attended over 15 years on the trot :woot:. I have just sold all my on-road kit so I will only be racing off-road moving forward (on-road was always a distraction and no where near as much fun :thumbdown:). It would be great to see you back I'm hoping to do the SORC next year, we just had way to much on this year what with trying to race on-road as well. Hope your going to race 2WD?

Yeah, I noticed you were still 'at it'! I'd love to make a comeback and do the SORC next year, but would probably opt for 4WD as a starter. I'm prepared to be amazed at how bad I'll be!

Shame you went to watch sheep racing rather than come along to Falkirk :)

We are not getting nearly enough numbers. Its a shame but to be honest the competition is still there so you will have people to race and wont be bored. There is plenty of banter and it makes for a really enjoyable day.

I had an 18 year break before doing this years SORC and got back into it no problem. I dont think I took the motor out of the car all season, and only changed gearing once. Its such low maintenance on the electrics side that its now just purely about set up and driver comittment.
Anyone can go ballistic for 5 minutes, no dumping with lipo, so its still about who crashes less wins.

2wd was getting more numbers at a couple of rounds than 4wd.

120 drivers would be a pipe dream going by current levels, however the rounds were well run and commentated/refereed on by John Allan and the clubs so it can only serve to create a bit of mass going forward.

Go on, give it a go again, what about Gordon and Iain too?? Derek Kerr had it too easy in the Veterans class :p

I don't know about having it easy in the veterans, it was hard going every meeting. Be good to see a few of the "experienced" racers making a comeback, never know, the veterans could become the main class :thumbsup:

Do your research Jimmy, pick any of the main cars, Durango, Associated, Tamiya, Kyosho, Scumacher (in no order), stick a speedo in that is relatively new (you may want to consider reverse until you get used to it again :woot: ), a 6.5 motor and lipo (they will all have more power than you can use). Mind your lipo sack and your pretty well sorted.

We're needing to get something like Reporting Scotland to do a wee ditty before next years champs start. Also local papers are usually champing at the bit to do wee articles on local clubs etc. That's how I am thinking I might regenerate some activity in this area. Might also see if any of the existing Carlisle guys want to re-adopt 1/10th Off Road.

Still actually haven't decided if I'm going to have a go at this again! Kinda looks like I might!

not sure if your racing next year or not, I'm guessing you will be doing a fair bit of research at the weekend :thumbsup:

Have a look at www.sorcinfo.org (http://www.sorcinfo.org) , all the results for every round this year and last are there, you will see the numbers plus who they are.

It's probably something like yourself making a comeback that will trigger a few more, just consider yourself as the catalyst to a bigger series for 2013.

As great as it would be to get these racers from the past to come back we also nee to look to the future & do something about getting new racers into the sport. We have some young guys today that are promising:

Dougie Meikle (a potential future champion)
Craig Ivory (also a potential future champion)
Thomas Tunstall (can be quick but lacks the consistency atm)
Jamie McCaffery (will be interesting to see how good he is is a few years)

I don't want to speak out of turn (I'm conscious of being new around here) but surely the sport has a finite future if the emphasis is on attracting returnees?

I think John makes a great point about getting more youngsters for the future, but - so as not to feel left out, although I recognise I'm in a minority group ;) - it would be good to attract more <cough> 'mature' newcomers to the sport too.

An example side-effect of that is in a few years from now I hope my son (he's 3 1/2) will be interested in racing.
