Most likely is pressures of modern working life ..... I know that has taken me close to selling up a few times over the last couple of years.
Next most likely is the rising cost of living, especially fuel ...... I run an efficient diesel (modded and remapped to suit) and still shudder to think how much it costs me now just to get to a meeting .... cost of fuel limits funds for racing kit like tires at the meeting.
Even when i worked away and was only home at the weekends i never dreamt of selling up, its something i look forward too for the weekend. Now i work fairly local (i can go home at night) i still bang in 50 hours from monday to friday.
What i am trying to say is, i think it depends on how you see the hobby/sport, some do it because their dads want them too, some do it for the social side and some do it for the competition or both. Right now i would rather halve my wage and be at home and not feel guilty about going away at the weekends. That way her indoors doesn`t moan either.
If i was still racing on road i think i would be doing very little racing though. Just cos its GAY:lol:

Well, i am part of the selling up group at the moment and this is only due to my first child arriving in 7 weeks. I want to spend as much times as possible at home with them!!
Selling my gear now while its still worth something, as im sure in a couple of years when i return it will be worth pennies and ill want new stuff, like 1 turn brushless and 10,000mah lipo!!!
I was just going to say, maybe there is an age revolution going on, and they are at the time of their life where little rug rats are appearing, and it is dam hard to put the effort into house-misses-little un-racing, one of them has to give, although, after being there and done that.... I would say, sell the stuff that won't be worth much in a year or so, but stuff like car, radio gear and electronics, guard with your life and hide it in the attic..... if you don't come back, hold onto it for 10 years, and they will be collector items :woot:

Well I'm selling up because I haven't raced for nearly 7 years. Most my kit now is not worth a fat lot compared to when I bought it anyway. Plus green coated nicads don't seem to work to well :)
I now have a little one aswell. I'm sure he would make a great marshall. He would crawl after the cars around the track and maybe give them a good run for their money!!
Hopefully in a few years I can get them interested and we can do it together.

Im with Lee on this one. I do this for escape-ism from life & work. The few weekends when I don't race, I am really moody on a Monday and the weekend drags big time - there is only so many times I can wax my car and doing anything else costs more than I can justify (id rather spend it on tyres!!!)
It does gripe me at the cost, but only afterwards, while im racing I just want to escape from my emails, work, etc. and crack on with competing & socialising.

If i'm not RC Racing, i'm out watching me brother rallying. Kids love the rallying. Her indoors doesn't like it.
lots of reasons, I know I will be pretty soon.

Nope, I race offroad and very occasionaly onroad.

the initial cost is the biggest outlay. A regional meeting only costs the same amount as what a night out in liverpool would total, if not less (if you tally the booking in, fuel, tyres, but not adding possible breakages). Most people i know would spend around £50 + on at least one big night out a week :o
Kopite
21-05-2008, 01:31 PM
...and by saying this, i'm not suggesting that it's normal to spend that much!! I'm just saying that i probably get more out of racing on a sunday than i would out of a piss up on friday or saturday night (and feeling like death/regretting the biffa i pulled the night before). I totally agree with the escapism comment
Easily Stan, if i go out and only spend 50 notes its been a cheap night.
I have spent over 200 in one night but we wont go into that:lol:
Off road is cheap compared to on road, we can get away with not having the latest and greatest.
I think most people can get away with a new set a meeting (club/regional), thats only £15 if you use acetone.

:( Looks like i may well be packing up again too having only really recently had another go! I was lucky in that i didn't have to spend too much to get into it again but it's still surprising how much you have to spend just to get to a regional if you want to compete (Can be as much as 2 sets of tyres, £30/40 fuel, £8 booking in - As Stan said i guess about £50 is the norm if not more.... which isn't a great deal but with a mortgage to pay for, a wedding in 4 months or so and the "pressure" of her indoors watching every single penny gets a bit much.
Sometimes as much as i love having a hobby i think you have to take a step back and re-assess your priorities, some things are too important and for me having the luxuary of Racing is something i can't really afford or certainly justify i suppose at the moment.........
I may come back again one day but the main thing i wanted to do was prove to myself that i could still compete at a high level but for now i shall start looking at selling up - Anyone want a virtually new/mint B4 with lots of nice bits, a 6 meeting old Novak Brushless system and shed loads of new Tyres & Spares please PM me and i'll get back to you this weekend with what i have.
Cheers guys.

but also going back to the escaping the real world comment, ive always thought that especially when ive had a bad week or something..

Hey up Nick,
What happened with those Cat wheels, I sent the money via paypal a while back...? Sorry to hear you giving up. I have had to cut down to just club racing every fortnight just due to the cost, and doing work at home on the house and garden. Hopefully now I have paid out for a lot of things, it shouldn't be too bad, but I understand why people have to give up. Hope to see you again soon.

Haha yeah i would still like to come to at least one but i know i'd only really feel like i should be racing!!
I'm still hopeful that maybe next year (end of) or the following maybe i can have another play but it's just i've got so much to pay out for this year and there doesn't seem to be enough weekends as it is so i only really have the one option :-(

Guess I'm lucky then rc racing is my "cheap" hobby, a bike track day willl probably cost me £150 -£200 incl fuell but without crashing wheras I can drive my small works van ( free fuell ) to rc meets and I genraly recycle wheels etc.
that said swimbo and I both work, only have fixed outgoings of £1300 a month between the 2 of us ( morgage bills food etc )
most of our furniture is second hand both our cars combined are only worth about £4k cheap but happy thats my motto.
I'm actualy selling my £5k honda fireblade as I can afford to keep it but cant justify to myself using a £5k 170mph bike on the road when a £2k 150mph bike is more than enough.
you can either have one expensive toy or lots of cheap ones.
I also dont and wont have kids and the wench is happy with a £500 wedding in the local reg office ( when she finaly drags me down the isle )
and a big party at my folks house ( large garden y'see)
my motto if you dont think you can afford it then you cant.
and as for those who spend £25k on a wedding unless thats a months sallary your head needs examining :o
A lot can be said for doing your own car servicing, waiting for that film to come out on dvd, oven pizza rather than dominos, crate of beer round a mates place rather than bar prices at the pub.
then again if all you do is put off the fun things to save ££'s life can be a bit boring

ha ha. I don't just wait for the DVD, I wait for them to drop below £5 at Asda. When i need a shirt for work, £3 George ones, and same for trousers etc.. 2 for £25 jeans (comfier than the Teddy Smiths I have too).
But thats because id rather drive a nice car, have a great hobby, go on holiday and do stuff on impulse while putting a few quid asside, without any loans or debts. But then again, I don't have a mortgage and can't see myself affording one without quiting socialising, driving, life, hobbies.... all but work.... and im not doing that.

Really there are three ways to save rc:
1.If we were to con a multi billionaire into doing rc then maybe he will donate to the BRCA and we will not have to pay any racing/membership fees and maybe even the annual rent of all the tracks could be paid, so we would have free racing!
2.Maybe we should claim that the BRCA is a charity to help wipe out some disease through rc racing... I am sure that there has to be somethinG, maybe make up a new disease!
3.Or we could go communist! We could pay more to the BRCA who in turn buy shit loads of lipos, tyres all in mass bulk and then distribute them to us!
( I am not mad just bored and depressed as I just realised it would be cheaper to buy an entire second hand car rather than buying all the individual parts to repair my car!)

I do like my toys, but i dont have any loans etc apart from my 300k mortgage. And i get about 4 months off a year:thumbsup:
The thing is there are those of us who do it as a hobby and then theres those who think they can buy their way to the top. I personally race for the social side plus I think all men need a hobby of some kind.

My major cut down will come this winter/next year when the twins are born.
I think I will just be doing regionals next year and possibly just worksop through the winter...if I can get away with it.:D
It's not too bad at the moment because my daughter is 6 and so can decide herself if she wants to come to meetings or not (I'll have the whole family with me at Tally-so it better be sunny).
Not being able to afford the outlay on a caravan (well, a decent one anyway) it will be a hotel job, and that will be the case for all the Nats. and that aint cheap, although when you add up the extra cost for fuel (pulling a 'van), food and everthing else that comes with camping then its probably not much different.
Fuel is the major outlay at the moment though, and until something is done about it, it could be the reason why a lot of people pack up.
But saying all that, its good to have 'me' time, and getting away for a days racing is great, even if the family comes too.
I can understand why people want to spend more time with the family when the kid/s come along, but it is a LOT of hard work and it wont be long until they are wanting free time to relax.
I actually loved going back to work when sophie was born because although work was hard, its not as hard as looking after kids and it was a relief to have time in someone elses company, even though it was only for half a day. When I say hard work looking after kids, I mean hard as in, tiring and exhausting, especially if they're not a child that likes to just sleep and eat........which ours wasn't! lol
1 hrs sleep per night for 2 yrs! takes its toll!!!:lol:
They're worth it though.

I have given up twice in the last 15 years and sold everything its hard work having to start again with everything. I am with Lee and Chris you need something to do at the weekends and you can make it as cost as much as you want it to. I work all week and racing gets me out into the fresh air to relax. I dont go out on the piss anymore so this is the only thing that I do. I go to the nationals on a budget one set of tyres for each car and thats it then they are used for the next regional (which I made the A final with on sunday) the 4wd tyres will be used at the next national as well, the cheepest crate of beer at asda and a bit of food sausages bacon and eggs in the main. I only have a little car so it dosn't cost the earth to run £35 should get me to tally and back as I tow a little trailor so cant go over 60. I enjoy the nationals as you get to watch some of the best drivers in the world and maybe you may be lucky and get near to them (within a second a lap I am a happy man). Tel get a tent they can be got cheep as and they are realy comfy if done right ours is like a home from home.

Spencer, done the tent stuff before and love it, but at the moment (with the missus being a SERIOUS asthmatic...and preggers with the twins) the cold in the night and damp tents don't react very well with the old lungs etc. So we have to keep her nice and dry n warm.
Otherwise we'd do that.
I'm quite happy to tent it on my own If they don't come with me.
Which I may do if they don't happen to come to any nats.:)

So nearly everywhere in the UK, gasoline and diesel prices are over 4 pounds ($8 USD) per gallon?
We just hit $4.199 USD per gallon here in north central USA (Milwaukee, Wisconsin area).

Diesel is about £5 a gallon over here:o
But we do get an extra 0.8 litres to our gallon in the uk:lol:

100 pence = 1 Br. pound? Excuse my typical US ignorance!
Northy, you mean 1.319 Br. pound per litre? If my math is right, that is $9.884 per gallon! WOW!
EDIT: Just checked... diesel selling around here for $4.599-4.699 per gallon. I'd have a hard time keeping my R/C racing addiction going too if I lived there. It's too bad. :(
Yes , correct, its around £1.25 per litre where i live
£5.65 per UK Gallon:cry:
$9.30 per US gallon:(
Its not cheap

I just filled up my Golf (Petrol) and it was £60.75, at £1.15 a litre..... Not hit the £60 mark before, not with this car anyway, and that's all for 300 Miles driving Greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeat
Having just bought a 2nd car it just adds to my reasoning as to why i can't carry on racing, i could probably do it on a budget but the last thing i want is to go racing and do crap just because of Tyres etc, that really is no fun from my point of view - i only ever like to be able to blame errors / mistakes for not getting the right result, not tyres :-(

Maybe the RC community should get a petition up and send it to government to lower prices, or it could seriously hurt the hobby/sport?
Not just ours but a whole host of others too.

There's sooo many reasons but I just can't see it changing at the moment.
Years ago when my dad was racing Motocross, they tried to ban the sport then due to the usage of Fuel, but the organisers were quick to point out that the amount of fuel getting used every day/night & weekend for people to go Fishing far out-weighed any fuel that was getting used at all the motocross races going on at any weekend!
Travelling is a big issue - i just can't see anything being done about it though - petitions are always a good start!

Over here in NI the fuel is about £1.12/litre for petrol and 1.33/litre for diesel. Diesel is a lot more common here hence why its now more expensive.
A quick 9 mile drive and we can get diesel for £1.02/litre from the south, not sure what the petrol prices are over there.
........ petitions are always a good start!
To get prices of fuel down.
1 - Help the US economy - This can be done purchasing approx £1.2 Trillion pounds worth of RC spares
2 - Strengthen the dollar - OPECs petro dollar will go further and will be able to buy more gold toilet seat bling
3 - Then ask OPEC to stop stiffling supply as their Petro Dollar can now afford many RC parts
4 - When using your car ensure you push it up all hills, freewheel down hills and only use the motor to recharge the Battery after you have nearly flattened it with peaking RC cells.
Right then, who's up for it!

What annoys you though, is when the fuel companies mention (like the other week) that they made, so many billions profit last year!!
Surely, they could still survive loosing 1/2billion profit from their 30bn and cut the price of the fuel?
Rediculous. Basically laughing in our faces and nowts being done. Yet the other year there were road blocks etc because the fuel was about to hit 80p!
Where have all these people gone to?

I heard on the news tonight that oil hit $135 per barrell and it's due to go up even higher!!! It was $65 per barrell this time last year, so fuel prices are set to go even higher:cry:

........ remember a couple of things.
1) The largest part of the cost of fuel is TAX. Remember there is TAX on the fuel used to deliver the fuel, on the overall amount (VAT) and obviously the duty on the fuel you by itself.
2) The petro-chemical companies don't make much profit at all at the pumps, certainly no more than 10% of the pre-tax prices! They make their profits from the by-products of refining oil based products, other energy industrial sectors and by investment in futures etc (trust me most big multinational companies make more money playing on the money markets than by their products .... no matter what the industry).
3) The majority of petrol stations are not owned by the big oil companies and they don't make their money on the fuel you buy either ..... more so on the crap you buy whilst walking through (food, drinks, mags & papers ...... etc.)
If you want to see fuel prices fall in this country do something about the government ....all those thinking of voting red again ... well it's your funeral!!!!

appreciated, but Shell made record profits of 13billion last year, and a record 5.4 billion in the last quater of last year.
Yes the majority of the price is TAX, but it just annoys you when you here that these people are making this much profit.
I know mentioning it on here wont have any effect on it at all, but surely something needs to be done between the fuel companies and the gov. to stop it going out of control.
Companies are already closing doors because they can't afford fuel for their fleets etc.

More high taxes to pay for our nanny state. If they reduce fuel then they would get it some other way.
The country is crippled by all the "hangers on" claiming every benefit under the sun. Single mothers bringing up four kids by three different moronic fathers. The only example of daily effort the kids see is Mother popping to the shop for another packet of fags or to the Post Office to pick up the benefits. How do the kids stand a chance ? The future of the UK. Scum breed more scum and ironically, breeding is all they seem to be good at. Have you been into a Post Office lately ? Id hate working there ( Ash you had a lucky escape IMO ). I had to hold my breath today in the que when i was stood behind a teenage girl with two kids in toe. She plain stank of BO. Clothes filthy with the bottoms of her grubby trousers trailing on the floor all frayed. Swore at the kid because he wanted a toy from the shelf. I felt so sorry for the little lad i felt like buying it for him. Shes was stood on her bloody mobile phone whilst being served. Rude arrogant scum !

even though I rarely race I would never sell up...Need something to think about to take my mind away from work and all the other stressful stuff. Even just running in a car park once a week or performing maintenance at home/repairing breakages is a great distraction.

I've read a lot of this thread, but if this point has been made, and I missed it, apologies...
Is it the case that more people are selling up, or is it the case that in a modern World, with Flea-Bay, Oople, and a myriad other on-line ways of selling stuff, are we just more aware when people do sell up?
In days gone by, RC participation moved with the economy - it's up and people join in, it's down and people have to give up. Back then, things were sold at Clubs and Nationals and through the local newspaper, shop and things like Exchange and Mart.
We have had a growing economy since 1996, a time when the internet didn't really exist, no one had heard of pay-as-you-go mobiles, text messages, GPS, Digital TV, broadband, NiMH, 2.4Ghz... I could go on. Prior to that there was boom and bust every five years, so it wasn't unusual to see people sell up.
This is the first time in over 10 years that people's pockets have been hit hard, and so we see a lot of people selling up - and this time we can see them do it. I'm not sure that there are any more people leaving the hobby in a downturn than there have been the last time this happened, but the key difference is that it can be seen.
The other thing we don't know is whether people are selling up from the main class on this forum (Electrics, and Off-Road in particular) and going to Gas - Rallycross, Large Scale, etc.
Nice to see some people taking the family to the Club and the Nationals. I used to do the monthly Chesham meetings, and there were lots of families on the sunny days, and the same at Nationals. When the sun shines, Off-Road has great appeal, but my class (12th) at least guarantees I don't get wet and have to clean a muddy car! :D

Do you know, thats one thing you don't see much of when you race 'on road'.....families.
More off roaders seem to take the family along with them.
That's why I got into off-road all those years ago, everyone was very welcoming and non-judgmental. I still think it's true, the off-road gang just seem to take things less seriously.
Well, if this selling up is due to a downturn in the economy, I hope things perk up again soon and everyone re-buys their stuff. What goes down must come up and all that. :)

When you were going on about tax,you do realise that it is currently running at 83pence/litre.Even this will be out of date now,(that was when we were only paying a max of 1.07/litre).

I didn't know The Daily Mail had an account on here :woot:
But really, you need to get a smaller brush so you don't tar everyone with that same brush. I am one of those 'hangers on' as you so call, ok, I worked for 14 years for the government, and divorce beckoned, I had the children, and, well I couldn't bring myself to dump them in child care every day to go to work, so decided to be old fashioned, and bring my own children up....
But I also understand about the teen mothers, we have a few here and it is depressing to see at times, but we live in a promiscuous society where sleeping around is seen as a good thing and not a bad thing.... but we digress from the thread.
I think the cost of living is one factor for people to pack in, plus lots starting families etc, in the end, luxuries go before the essentials, and racing is a luxury...

I haven't got any issue with anyone else wanting 4,5,6, or more kids. I just don't expect to have to fund them myself through ever increasing taxes.
I live in an area where teen pregnancy is amongst the highest in the country. I stand by what i said. I have no issues with anyone claiming benefits who aren't able to work. Its just those who see it as a career in its own right who get up my nose :)

I read the other day that the Daily Mail is short of columnists - your CV seems good!
This is just the sort of mis-informed b******s that you accuse the single mums and moronic fathers of. We have one of the lowest tax rates in Europe, and yet we have the highest rates of teenage pregnancy. We also have one of the least supportive Social Security system in Europe, and yet one of the highest rates of crime.
Of the almost £500bn a year the Government gets in tax, less than £90bn goes on Social Security. More goes to the NHS. Indeed, more of your taxes go to companies operating services under the the Private Finance Initiative than goes to single mums. If you really want to get 'Daily Mail' about something, go ape about the PFI. Also, go ape about the £30bn-odd HMG has spent on failed IT projects over the last few years.
If you want to be rightly indignant, there is much more waste of our taxes on things other than large families and single mums, it's just that you have to do a bit more work than watch Sky and read the Daily Mail. And, you have to vote and do something to change the situation. If that's too hard, there's always emigration...
Give it a rest; its not big, its not clever, and its not right.
