Anybody got a idea what 4wd fronts to use ? i am thinking 2wd minipins.

nitrokillah
06-06-2008, 07:42 AM
Yep front 2wd mini pins are what most people use.
Or cut 4wd.
The surface and Layout Has been redone. so there is plenty of grip.

super__dan
06-06-2008, 07:52 AM
Jonathan,

I'd take something a bit more tame too, last year Ellis, Matt Benfield, Chris Long and I all made the A with stagger ribs on the front. They are a great qualifying tyre though ultimatly didn't have the pace in the finals to defend a line so we went back to pins with varying results.

I'm taking staggers, minis and pins this year just in case. Tyre wear is very low so you don't need loads of tyres.

remember : cut and shut tyres are no longer allowed.

The safest bet is to use staggered ribs at the front.

I also used 2wd slim minipins on a wide 4wd rim. this gives more front end grip compared to the staggered but is less agressive then full 4wd front minipins. also always cut the outer rows of pins

can't remember how many laps i did last year but i guess it was 1/2 a years worth of racing in 4 days.......

It is by far my most favorite track and i am really looking forward to see the wall of death in action.

Chances are i will be doing a good bit of practice this year with 2wd/truck and potentialy a new 4wd to work on...... but no lipo otherwise you would have to drag me off the rostrum!!!

Chris i would put the shorts in mate you would be gutted if you did not have them and the sun comes out......

Rear: Yellow minipins for sure. I think these are insensitive to changes in insert.
2WD front: yellow stagger ribs. No inserts. (Although Janus uses them)
4WD front: staggers is safe. Too safe for me. 2WD slim minipins is probably your best bet, with plenty of rows of pins nipped off. Slim minispikes is also an option, but I think it's a slow one.
Wet: BB minipins, pink. Losi inserts are good, BB and Snee blue are better.
in-between-wet-and-dry: BB green pins.

the stock foam from touringcar tires work well, PitShimizu fit nice when stretched. Grip is the same, but the car reacts a bit quicker.

Stopped using them though, stopped running touringcar ( duh.... ), so ran out of inserts.

Elvo, have you done much running with not cut and shut tyres now they are banned for the GP, does this change things much? I saw one of the UK lads on worn non cut and shuts and his car seemed to want to grip roll a lot (4wd).

Do you think staggers are faster than minis on a 4wd front?

Reevsey
06-06-2008, 02:03 PM
well i guess as you can only run hard case and LRP don't do any hardcase i am a bit stuck on the lipo front..... will just have to have 3 chargers on the go to make sure i get enough practice in!!!:)

super__dan
06-06-2008, 02:18 PM
I've got 5 packs of last years cells I plan to use for practice. Realistically they could only be used 3 times a day as at like 15 minutes a run thats nearly 4 hours continuous track time. Frankly my eyes won't take that, especially not with Chris' shorts.

PS I've bought some new jazzy shorts, they're ACE!

The way to get around the Cut and Shut rule in 4wd (isn't really needed in 2wd) is to use 4wd front tires in the rear and 2wd fronts in the front. If there streched over normal wheels they become much lower than normal tires.

I sometimes use them in the rear of my 2wd aswell to get some more steering. (the white X-6 )

With 2WD slim minipins stretched over a wide and large enough rim, and enough rows nipped off, it should be OK. I don't know if anyone has ever tested blue front slim minipins? Might be the ticket for racers with griprollophobia.
I haven't driven 4WD much, but I'm not a fan of staggers in 4WD. The diameter is too small, the front wheels don't have enough pull out of the corners. Might as well be driving a 2WD :-D

About 4Wd front minipins on wide rims at rear: I'm not a huge fan. unlike Janus, I approach corners like a real panzy, braking beforehand, etc... I found that with the sidewalls all straight and messed up, sideways compliance is basically gone. I wasn't happy with on-power powering-out-of-turns behaviour either. (along the hedge etc)
But they do give more rotation. Bit abrupt though.

In 4wd is probably a better option, But you'd need to remember your putting on lower tires, so you can't just swap them and expect it to work, You'd need to at least compensate on driving height and maybe take 2 or 3 packs to adapt your setup if your used to run normal unmodified tires.

In 2wd I have to admit this is not the thing to do for everyone. Again you'd need a few packs to perfect your setup (for me is rear ride height, and go -5wt in the rear shocks). But even then it's for the people who don't like to use breaks and/or like a bit more ...errrmmm... hostile car. So for the people who are contemplating minipin or spikes in the front.......

MCM should be on site from fridays to supply tires and parts.

the 3 to 4 runs estimate is for full-on racing. In practise you can use sets a lot longer.

what about pitting, do people take gazebos / tents ?

Chrislong
08-06-2008, 07:16 PM
Yeh, take Gazebo or tent. The track is kinda in the woods, so pitting is within the tree's, its really cool though.

As for tyres Paul, take all your part worns and thrash them through practice, then perhaps start to try new by the end of Friday just to make sure the car doesn't bite you when it matters. Won't need many new ones.

And don't forget, everyone gets 4 rouns of qualifying and 3 leg finals.

Usually, the number of people on the rostrum is more or less equal to the number of cars on the track. Increasing rostrum width alone is not a solution.

I miss the GP, I think I have lost count to the times I have been but with other commitments it can't all be done. Good luck to all that are going, definately a great track and you will all love it!!!!!!!

flipside
09-06-2008, 10:49 PM
With lipo it's becoming a problem... Each pack takes too long, so there will be long rows of people like last year!

for example practise from 8 to 20H, so 12 hours in total. Average 10 minutes per pack (probably a lot more...). 720 minutes / 10 = 72 packs. 10 people simultaneously so that is 720 packs. 80 people in 2WD, 60 4WD and 10 trucks, so +-100 people wanting to practise. 720packs/100=7,2 packs per person over a time span of 12 hours :-) People want to drive at least 1 time per hour, usually a lot more, so the waiting line should be huge :-)

Tris

super__dan
10-06-2008, 12:53 PM

Chrislong
10-06-2008, 01:07 PM
I can see what you are saying about Lipo, but I can't see it. As last year with cells, I was getting 10+ minutes practice at a time (til dumped) and some times I had Chazz waiting with another car so I was on for 20+ minutes or perhaps 30mins at a time!! mental.

This year I have Lipo, but I don't want to run these flat as it damages them, so I will time each run to be exactly 10 minutes, so I won't be running til dumped. And I won't be staying on for two runs, as having 1 Lipo pack per car mean I won't have a lot of cells charged at once to keep going up like last year - got to keep going back to charge them.

Proof is in the pudding, we'll only find out on Friday how busy practice will be. I'll try and cain it Thursday so I can be sensible on Friday an not hog a spot on the rostrum.

flipside
10-06-2008, 01:11 PM
Yeah true.

maybe we should all be a bit fair and practise 5 - 8 mins or something. After all, by then you prob know if your setup change is good or bad. Of course getting to know the track takes some time too...

Chrislong
10-06-2008, 01:15 PM
Realistically, practicing for more than 5-8 minutes and the car suffers with heat, tyres worn and your brain has probably stopped pumping out the moves on the thumbs as well as it should

I think it would be very good if we had heat practice at least on the firday but extended to 8 - 10 mins max per heat all day, this way things stay controlled to some sence and everyone has a fair chance and a very similer amount of track time. I know that there will be 6 heats in 4wd that will be a very long time meaning 10 mins of every hour youll be on the track but isnt that enough?

Thursday will be great and hopfully not too busy for us lads who havnt been yet to learn the track curface and find a set-up with the right tyres for us as there seems to be varied opinions on them. Plus we wont be throwing away practice heats with a bad choice on set-up having to wait for each heat to run

to be honest its a shame that ppl are commenting about practice times and changng the set-up of the meeting its kinda out of place (not to offend anyone) wait till u get there and see how the the open practice runs. u got think 2 whole days of open practice theres plenty of time and its not as if u will empty each pack out. we found the best way was to give it a couple of minutes round the track pull it of and change the car try something different. its a unique opportunity to try and test different options u would not normally do.

plus u will love the whole experience everyone came a way with a smile on there face if a little tired lol. im gutted im missing it but sure i will be bk next year and see if i can make the top 3 wasn't far off at all last year :)

Been at the track all afternoon, it's been absolutely scorching, 28-29 degrees in the shade and if you stepped into the sunlight it was like a blow torch pointing at you. Willy marshalled a car and came back to the pits and said "the tyres on that car were actually hot:eh?:"

Absolutely no grip at all today, track was mega dusty and too hot to give any traction. I was running pins on the front of the 2wd at one point today:o

Weather is looking like turning for the worse wednesday and thursday and clear friday with showers forecast for saturday, apparently the track is gripiest after it has been cleaned by the rain, it is amazing how much dust was coming off the track today, my car, and me were filthy after practice today.

Kampenhout is one of those tracks where a 4wd isn't that much faster than a 2wd.

What was FTQ in 2wd Saturday? I know I was a second a lap faster with my 4wd and I could lap consistently at that speed, unlike my 2wd driving

Shlongs X-60 looked special, I was well impressed

Hey guys,
On Saturday evening while I was away from the track, my Trakpower V-balancer went missing from my pit bench.

Now I appreciate somebody may have borrowed it, as I consider everyone my friend who races and I don't mind that, so I was hoping it would have come back sometime on Sunday, Willy did put calls out and have a look for me, but it has not been returned to me.

I fear it has been stolen, but before I make that decision would like to give anybody the chance to simply PM me if they have it, or know who has it, and will give my postal address to return it to me and I will be glad to see it back.

Thank you.
Chris
