Hi
I'm thinking of getting my 5 year old in to rc racing as I had a blast back in the day. He's still young so looking for a cheap and robust 2wd that we, sorry he :D, can use for bashing in the back garden but is also capable of being used at club nights. Advice on electrics would be good, bruhless and lipo is all new to me and don't know if its overkill at this stage

Hello Richard, My Boy is 7 and i got him an Electrix RC Boost - Ready To Run 1/10th scale 2wd off road buggy £99. Brushed motor and fast enough for him and very robust !!!! He has used for bashing and club night.

I have a Boost, largely unused, they're ok if left completely standard as with only a 15T HPI Firebolt motor it twisted it's driveshafts & stripped an idler gear, it now has Traxxas VXL HD driveshafts & metal gears but then it's not so cheap, lol. Also, there aren't many UK parts stockists, i ended up ordering bits from the USA (amainhobbies). Apex Models lists lots of parts but they're not always actually in stock.
I'd suggest something like these:

http://www.dms-racing.com/ have all the parts you need. for a 5 year old you wont need to change anything. it is fast enough for my 7 year old
