Anyone got Apple TV?

Need something for the wife to buy me for Xmas and this came up as an option.

I have an iPad 4 but don't have an iPhone (although contract up in 2 weeks and could be tempted).

Is the Apple TV a fad or a useful toy?

I use mine for:

digital radio/music from macbook/ipad through the surround sound
Netflix (subscription needed)
mirroring/airplaying iplayer and other stuff from ipad (no actual apple tv app for it)
have hired the odd hd film from itunes (about £4.50 a pop)

You can airplay to it from some of the newer macbooks - mine is too old (2010) I think it's from 2011 onwards.

It's not the all singing all dancing media hub I was hoping for - mainly because nobody has been able to jailbreak it, but I do use mine a fair bit - it just needs more useful apps built in imho...

better off getting a non-apple streamer like a western digital. Far wider codec support and not restricted to services that apple allow you to use.

I almost always rent films through my Apple TV now, I've got other options with Virgin Media and PS3, but the Apple TV is just quicker and handy that I can browse what's available first on iPhone or iPad. Near instant on of the Apple TV is nice just to check what's newly available.

You need decent broadband 7ish+Mbps for HD streaming.

The airplay mirroring is a convenient cable free way of displaying most things that are on your iPad on the TV if you want to.

Apple tv has dropped in the ratings drasticlly. the V2 (NOT THE V£)can be jailbroken and used with XBMC this means you can gain acces for 10000's of movies music etc FREE!

There are a lot better media players that are quicker and full hd and work better in general, the apple tv is very tempremental and can be glitchy.

Research before you buy

This...

If you're wanting a little media box the WDTV live is a much better/more flexible option ;)

there not very good unless you jailbreak it..

the rental prices are over priced and you can access the same content on other devices!
