i test drove the golf and the focus but not the engine size you mentioned

the focus was ok, but i just find the out date them selfs and the cabin wasnt as fresh as some other cars the one i had was the 1.6 petrol and i found it needed to be worked to get around.

VW was good, but the price tag was to high and i tought the dash looked a bit pore but i liked the overall feel of driving it in town and on A roads ...so i bought a vw leon :) Seat have a deal on right now, if you get the 1.6 or 1.9D Essence Leon you get a free up grade to the Stylance model that has a lot of the toys

I have a Focus 1.8TDCI Zetec, it's a good engine to make a pretty swift daily driver but not sure I'm want to tow a caravan without a bit more go, think I'd want the 2.0 if I was you! Other than that I think my Focus is ace.

Mazda's good but I'm not a fan,it's fast and the ride is hard, but it isn't my thing.
its looking like a vw 1.9 tdi at the mo, smaller massively economical, and quiet fast, just had a test drive was nice, the 1.8 tdi ford is noisey and gruff.the 2.0 ltr was way better, but hard ride at low speeds, still haven't tried the zafira yet,

If you can add to the list have a look at the Seat Altea XL. Same as the Golf underneath but a MONSTER boot - great for racing!

(We have one).

On my reading around and looking:

Ford and Vauxhall lose loads of money from new in their first year, best to go nearly new or used, and get a massive discount. The 2.0 TDCI Focus is a good car, and drives really nicely.

VW hold on to value well, but cost more to start, so best going new tbh if you can afford it. the 2.0 golf has a much better engine than the cave man 1.9 lol

the focus c-max 2.0 tdci is one of the best cars i have ridden in. Superb ride comfort. Even my dad liked driving it!

Otherwise as millsy said, look at VW alternatives, Skoda Octavia's can be picked up cheaper than VW, and have a bigger boot, and more room in the back. Seem to favour better in long term reviews as well. You can also get the DSG gearbox with the 1.9 engine as well on the octavia.

Carl.
With the Skoda/Seat range you get more extra's on them and they are Cheaper to insure, compared to there VW/Audi counter parts. + they are cheaperto service. There is 2 versions of the 2.0 TDI Engine out there at the moment. There is 1 which pushes out 180 bhp or there is a 140 bhp version, both with a DSG gearbox.
