Lol, i didnt see that post, i registered :woot: gonna find a better one now.
Im not a lead engineer yet josh, im just a senior at the minute.
On top of that rate there wall also be VAT which you would charge at 17.5% and give the government 11.5%, so its an extra 6% in your pocket

Screw making planes, Oil & gas it is then! :woot:
I've been on a ferry before, does that count as offshore experience?

my companies' turnover isn't big enough for 11.5 - i had to settle for 12% :p

To be honest the money isn`t really on the rigs, its in the design offices and the commissioning side of things. Offshore as a staff man your probably looking at 55k but remember you pay 40% tax on 20k of that:thumbdown:
I go offshore occassionally for commissioning and surveys but i have a clause in my contract to say that i want an extra £100 a day for the inconvenience and also a minimum of 12 hours pay:thumbsup:
The oil industry is good right now and there is a lot of money to be made if you want it.

Well, it would be a pay cut - but it does sounds interesting..
Seriously, how do I get into this scene? I have 10 years experience, Mech. Eng. degree and 3D CAD skills? And I like boats & oil :woot:
If you put your CV on oil and gas job search, or oil careers, or jobsite, then im sure you will get numerous calls from agents, you want to go contract too, not staff, there is more money and less tax in the contract game.:)

Its not a cushy job on an Oil rig ! Need to pass some sort of medical I think and do the stapped in a helicopter dunked into cold swimming pool test! :o
Some of the blokes that I work with like the work but not for to long. 6 weeks is about max for some 10 at the most before a shore break. :eh?: Long 12 hour or more days ( cos you can really packup and go home) and there are only so many movies and beers you can cope with each night !
Oh and the money is good ! Norway is cold though isnt it ?? Some of the guys do the oil pipelines in saudi and all those other countrys owned by that man "STAN" . Middle of desert ! Armed guards ! 50 degrees ! Most come back 2 stone lighter after a month ! Hey theres a thought ! if I went for a year id get down to the proper weight for 6ft 3.:woot:

The platforms are dry, no drink:(
Your right it is no fun and after 2 weeks on one you are like a zombie, shifta are usually 7-7 and sometimes a swap between days and nights for week 2.
The medical and survival training were brilliant i loved it but i did mine in blackpool and got wankered most nights which probably helped. The helicopter in a pool thing was cool but hard work, you get dunked 6 times and sometimes it rolls over and you have to manage to get out of the small windows which is not easy in a survival suit.
Its all good fun though but deep down you know if the chopper goes down your a gonner:)

Something in this world is totally wrong I have been watching on the news all day about shell HGV drivers getting nearly 40 grand a year now engineers working in the oil and gas industry getting paid that much is not right, especially after I have spent all day looking after ladies who are having an operation because they have cancer and I bring home £1150 a month. But I wouldnt do any other job because I love it I would just love a little more dollar to show that what we do is appreciated. This is not an attack on any of those guys who do those jobs as it must be hard and stressfull and if they can get that sort of money and people are willing to pay them that fair play.
Thats the thing spencer, i would love a job i enjoyed but to be honest i just go for the cash and sit there for 10-12 hours and come home and invoice the company on a friday.
I feel nurses, doctors etc etc do a far more worthwhile job and should be paid better, but i chose to take the cash instead of job satisfaction. Im not sure if that makes me a bad person but i know im doing the best i can for the kids:confused:

No doesnt make you a bad person Lee you are just looking after you and yours. I am lucky I enjoy my job I could have gone out and got a better paid job years ago but I have been doing this for 16 years now but I dont think I will ever change jobs. Maybe shell or one of the other companies should start running the NHS so that we could get paid more. That post was not a jibe at you Lee just the system I dont want your body guard after me, if you can earn the big bucks you go for it.
