Hi all,

I recently bougth a second hand 410v3, I have fitted a 6.5t Exceed motor which I have used in another car previously with no issue. I went for a practice and found that after 5 mins of running the motor was quite a bit hotter than I would like.

I have checked and the drive line feels free and the shell has plenty of holes to create a flow of air. Therefore I'm thinking I must have it slightly over geared (to be honest it was pretty ballistic). I am currently running a 22t pinion and the 87t spur and was thinking of shifting to a 21t pinion and an RW Racing 89t spur. I'm increasing the spur rather than dropping to a 20t as I need to make sure the motor stays where it is as I'm really tight for space using my HW Esc.

Can I ask what gearing others are running? Does this sound about right or do you think I have some other gremlin causing my heat issues??

i have just got myself a 410v3, and i'm running a 6.5t hpi flux motor on a 24 pinion and an 87 spur.

i haven't raced it in anger yet, but i'm hopping i'm in the right ballpark.

you might be slightly under geared, which does make the motor run hot.

hope that helps.

I ran 22 or 23 87 in my 410 all the time (about 2 years) with a 6.5 speed passion v3 it did get warm but nothing to worry about

in 10.5 i run 23/87 and 6.5 21/87 do u no the actual temp? i dont have any airholes?

I usually run between 22 and 24 pinion (depending on track size) with the 87 spur in my 410 on 6.5 and its fine. I work on the basis that if I can hold my thumb on the motor for at least 3 seconds after a qualifying run, then its OK.

Aggressive throttle action, lots of speedo timing/boost and ESC throttle profile can all contribute towards heat as well - try taming all 3 and see if it improves matters.

I have no experience of the motor you are running but it doesn't sound like its over geared (IMO).

I am not sure what temp is was but I used the "can you hold your finger on the can for more that 3 seconds rule" method and I could (just) but it was cold outside so i would have expected it not to be quite so hot.

I had considered the timing/boost on the Esc if I'm honest it came with the car when I bought it and I haven't really done anything with it as it's was new when i got it. I pressumed (maybe more fool me) it would come with reasonable settings. It's a HobbbyWing esc so I will try and sort out reducing the boost a bit and see if can back the timing off a bit.

The fact that several other people seem to be running the same/higher gear ratios suggests that this is not the issue so I will investigate further...

I'd get a temp gun on the motor/speedo.

Indoors on high grip astro/carpet, motor is coming off at 80ish and speedo 55ish. 6.5turn orion running turbo timing on a 23t pinion

I'd go through all the drivetrain bearings and joints and make sure everything as it should be. Grease the cvd joints, as this keeps the heat (and wear and resistance) down.

Also look at cutting the rear of the shell out to let the heat out and also opening the vents up in the front of the shell

I run between 19 and 23 using an exceed motor (6.5) on the stock spur. motor temps between 60 and 75ish.
peak was about 80 (only once or twice)

the finger test is pretty pointless as perfectly acceptable temps will take your print off!
saying that, the 410 runs very hot, get a digital temp gauge as soon as you can.

pretty sure you don't actually have an issue as such, just no way of telling how hot it actually is!

The point is that if you can put your thumb on it for a couple of seconds it's not too hot...

I have just recently made the switch to a 410 and have noticed it runs hotter than my B44.1 did.
I think it's just the design of the drivetrain and how tightly packed in the electrics are.
I ran 23/87 with a Trinity Revtech 6.5 and LRP Sxx on profile 3. Full carpet track with mini pins. Motor was coming off around 85 - 90.

Ok so having read people's comments I looked a bit closer as it appeared that gear ratio was not gonna be the problem...

The settings on the Esc were fine but I backed the timing off a touch and started looking at the drive train in more detail. The first issue I found was the slipper clutch had NO slip! It had been wound up so tight there was no way it was doing anything.

The second (and more important) issue was that one of the pins from the front dog bone had almost come out. This meant that when the suspension had load on it that the pin was catching the front shock tower. I didn't notice it before because when the front wishbones drooped (when I picked it up) the problem went away.. This has clearly been an issue for a while as there is actually a groove in the front shock tower where the pin has worn it away! I'm guessing this considerable extra resistence will have been putting one hell of a strain on the motor. All sorted now so I am hoping that when testing tomorrow it will be all good!

Thanks for all the comments with out them I would probably have been on the wrong path for a while. These are the joys of buying second hand....

I ran my new 410v3 lastnight for the first time.
Geared on 24 87 with an Hpi flux pro 6.5, and it was no hotter than my mates tamiya 511.
The track is a small twisty track so it should generate more heat as your on and of the gas.
I found it to be fine.
