Bit of an update...
Shell has now been painted in my normal colours by Nagy design...
Have also managed to obtain a bosscat so will be using the running gear from this once re-built, if it ever arrives!
Decided to go with the original shocks... think the kyosho ones are a step too far away from the original.... :) Does anyone have any old setups using these? or know which pistons will fit? (or the spring spacers)
Chassis layout for the mid mounted saddles is sorted, so now in the hands of DT Racing... fingers crossed I will have my carbon chassis & lipo retainers next week...
Really getting into this now.. :):):):):)

Awsome job all round! Will you be taking it along with you to Silverstone next week (15th)? Might have to pop up & take a look ;)
What did you use to get such a shine on your gearbox side plates - I polished up my TopCat chassis using a polishing mop at work & it looks great.... but I don't want to use the mop on the side plates as it 'dubs' over the edges, i've used varying grades of wet & dry paper (finishing at 2500 grit) & then a final polish with brasso... but they are not as shiney as yours :eh?:
The Pro-diffs & later-style slipper assembly from the donor BossCat i'm sure will more robust with using the Brushless set-up.
P.S; Chalkie, what have you got waiting in the wings?
Adam F

Ta for the comments... i'm really pleased with it so far...
Chassis wont be ready in time for next week, so aiming for the week after, although it will most likely be a gentle run around to make sure its screwed together right and the belts/diffs stay tight....
The polishing was just done with a cheapo alloy polishing kit from ebay. The pictures probably make it look better than real life, but i plan to re-polish it all before it goes back together for the last time.
Chalkie has the Cat's arch nemesis... but I will let him cover that..
We plan to run a vintage heat at Silverstone in the next couple of months or so if you fancy giving yours a run?
Plan is either original electrics or lipo/brushless with 8.5 limit....

Sounds cool... although what I normally race with (Losi CR2) is considered old-skool!
I ran my old XX a few times at Moulton in amongst the rest of the 2wds... which did ok considering it is rear motored (was better outdoors on Telstar's grass) I'm also planning on putting a Losi JRX2 together that I also want to run... so maybe I can join in the retro fun with that?
I know James (White) is putting together another of the CAT's rivals (one of his original race cars) Maybe we can rope him into racing that!

I've got a LWB optima mid I'm putting together to run, not far off now needs a shell, a few little bits sorting and some 2.2 wheels.
Not so sure about running the mustang Dan, I think the driveline would last one run on silvestones astro.

Haha, I didn't realise that 'Chalkie' is you James! I guess I should have realised given your 'speed matters' tag line lol!
Your Optima will the perfect rival to Adam's CAT - in my opinion the Kyosho was the easier car to get on with Bitd.

Finally received my Bosscats and pulled out the diffs etc...
Does anyone know if the Bosscat front diff can be fitted in a procat and if so what mods are needed?

Bit of an update.. Carbon chassis parts arrived from
DT Racing today... Very pleased indeed, very tidy and accurate.
Have managed to find a Bosscat slipper clutch, pro diff, rear roller shafts and alloy eccentrics plus some high grade rear belts.. Not sure of make but they are orange?
Rebuilt the diffs with ceramic balls, added the Belleville washers and they seem to be ok..
Just need to fit the Bosscat steering rack (schuey Ballraced one) and finish the shocks with some modern pistons and new shafts.
Will post some pics shortly, but its coming together now..

Mmmm love the mix of polished aluminium & the shiney carbon! Your design/arrangement for fitting the LiPo cells is very neat, also I assume your running pro-diffs from the BossCat?
Despite their bling looks - i'd be inclined to swap those roller driveshafts out for sliders original plastic sliders, they weren't 'that' much of an advantage from what I could remember but they seem to be quite rare & desirable, it would be a shame to break one of them :bored:

Guys I have bought stuff from Terry at DT Racing too, well worth a look if any of you want any custom carbon parts made - he is a vintage collector too so has many of the popular chassis, top decks, shock towers etc. He is currently cutting me a LWB mid chassis set.
Cheaper than 'the competition' and every bit the same quality of not better!

Hi,
I would be interested in racing some Vintage stuff at Silverstone. I've just moved down to South Northamptonshire from Leicester and I've been looking for somewhere to race. I used to race my Cougar 2 and Procat at Hinckley but their Retro Class has now died.
Here are some photos of my cars:

Ta Dan, it looks so much better in the flesh, cant wait to race it now...
The rollers are there purely as bling, I was going to mirror polish them too, but decided to leave them alone as I saw the ebay auction going mental.
Rear is a pro-diff and I hope to go along the same lines as Kazsal with a 2wd rear diff in the front. (if isobarik can sort me out :D)
Also planning some other carbon bits... hopefully in the next week or two..

Cars look great!
You would be more than welcome, Silverstone is a great club, plus the canteen is excelent so you can eat and race.... a bonus for a mid week "straight from work" meet.
The vintage heat will be every now and then, (not every week) but there is nothing to stop you running your cougar/procat in with the normal 2/4wd heats...
I think we are looking at mid next month for the full on retro class, but we are there every Tuesday, I hope to have mine running next week just for a shakedown.... :D

Hi Dan,
Yes I remember and thanks for putting those photos on Tamiyaclub.
Hi x313,
I've got a Mad Monkey with Losi XXX shocks and Lipo set-up for normal running. I'd be keen to get some more mileage under my belt with that car.
What time does racing start on Tuesday nights (I assume it's at Moulton College)? It's going to take me over an hour to get from Gaydon.
Cheers

Gayden? JLR by any chance?
Doors open around 5 and finish around 10. Racing starts around 7 so plenty of time to get booked in/eat/practice..
It's a great club, very friendly and welcoming.

Finally got a new front diff and managed to get the final assembly done..
Having a nightmare aligning the rear diff, have tried everything but the center belt keeps running off to the right (see pic)
Any idea's how to get it to run centrally whilst keeping the tension correct?

I think so....
When the eccentrics both point the same way the belt runs to the right and the LH belt feels looser than the RH... weird...
Adam F
01-02-2013, 11:46 PM
Found the problem, play the layshaft bush.... :(
Adam F
03-02-2013, 08:29 AM
Hmmmm.. I have changed the layshaft, but problem still seems to be there... no matter which orientation I fit the diff...
Took the car for a run yesterday but the belt keeps moving to the left, do the eccentrics have to be parallel? pretty sure with them offset I could balance it out...
Also when I set the rear belt tension to the (procat) manuals suggested 1-2mm deflection there seems to be a lot of drag.... more then I remember as a kid....
DerbyDan
04-02-2013, 01:57 PM
How does your belt lay when its out of the car? I have a belt from an old touring car that seems to be stretched along one edge, which can be seen when you lay it down on a flat surface. I would assume that the eccentrics should be adjusted the same both sides otherwise the diff outputs would bind in the bearings?
I have recently put together that gearbox for the TopCat, I know what you mean about the belt adjustment seeming tight at the suggested 1-2mm deflection. I know that the pitch of the belts are quite fine compared to more modern belt drive cars (I run my touring car with loads of slack without any problem) - that said, perhaps it would be best to errrr on the safe side & install as suggested in the manual - perhaps with an 8.5 running through it it will loosen up?

If you got the exentrics riight and the layshaft aslso its just the belts left ....so check em ...

As my Cat has been sitting on a shelf for almost two years (it was never meant to be a shelfer!) I thought I would dust it off and give it a run this week at Silverstone..
Decided to run a shorty instead of saddles and add some K1 Aero big bores as the originals badly need a rebuild and one is a little on the bent side..
Also added some new electrics, so running an Orion 6.5 :o, albeit with everything turned down and a long delay...
Quite looking forward to a bit of a play, although the novelty spikes will be replaced with some mini spikes and staggers on the front to try and keep it consistent and take some of the pressure off the front diff/main belt...

Adam, I ran my ProCAT with a 6.5 speed passion at Silverstone a couple of weeks back.
Its got a slipper and it was ok, the belts didn't slip or anything but by the end of the night the diffs were feeling rough, so I think they took the strain.
Dan runs a 6.5 in his too but he has one way drive shafts in the front (which I don't) so possibly this helps the front diff a bit.
I ran normal staggers and spikes and the balance was about right.
It will be good to see your CAT running again :-)
If you can keep it in one piece I'll bring mine along next week, or possibly even the Yoke if I pull my finger out!

Might chuck some one ways in the front if it makes it more reliable.. Hmmm..
Did you add any weight? It's only 1490g complete, Seems a little light. (Especially compared to my K1 at 1690 without wheels/tyres!!)

adamf, just noticed you posted that you were having problems aligning the belts in your cat due to the layshaft inserts. we always used to throw away the inserts and push a flanged ballrace into the layshaft ballrace as this removed all free play which was always there with the plastic inserts, until going to mms layshaft anyway. also have you checked that the gearbox is straight on the chassis, put a straight edge front to back before tightening the chassis screws, had to set my xls like this as gearbox twisted to one side until motor surround was replaced

I didn't add any weight, I do run mine with saddles though, so I guess that makes it something like 60g heavier.
