View Full Version : Where Does Your oOple-Name/Nickname Come From ?

James

Theres a few random names on here, some are funny, some are odd, some are normal... Intrigued to see where some of the more unusual ones came about :wtf:
I'll kick off with mine 'smokin' pretty much tongue in cheek because when i used to race in the good old days my cars were always a bit slow.. hence i was not err smokin round, my dads was probably funnier- smokin henry haha
In various other circles i'm known as Quazi after a farmer who just sits under a palm tree all day drinking palm wine (which is supposedly what i do), and also Smee (from red dwarf) sssmmmmmeeeeeeg heeeeeeaaaaad :D

Mines pretty obvious because of my name, but a friend at work used to be a big 'only fools and horses' fan, and so nicknamed me after 'Del boy', and it's stuck since.
:D

used to be called Tez at school, but that went away when we left.

Well...... do i need to explain?

jimmy
02-07-2008, 09:34 AM
Mine is because it's sort of my name. Actually I'm called James I think, but I don't like that anymore because it doesn't fit my 'crazy' image. I did consider changing my last name to oOple but I've not had the balls for it yet.

I think if shane is committed enough to get a tattoo then you should at least change your surname to oOple.

My name is lee because thats what my mum calls me I dont want to confuse things.
Although Vinny still struggles:(

MK or Mk, is short for my name Mark if you bodge it about a bit with engineering terms and also my first 2 initials... and 999 because it's not long enough to put into most places as an account name :p

Didn't know you did tattoo's Neil! bit of an artist eh? See you shortly :)

Well mine is obvious, its my name. My nickname from years gone by is Longy, and I still knock around with my school mates so it gets used a fair amount. There are too many people around called Chris for me to react on the first shout in a busy area. LOL. The only trouble is there is another lad in Bury called Longy and he's same age, and his first name is Chris, ha ha.

02-07-2008, 01:04 PM
People that used to scuba dive with me in the older days used to call me frogman and so I thought of using that but I did a Google image search to look for an avatar I came across a game I used to play when I was younger which was frogger so I chose that instead :eh?: :D

Cruise
02-07-2008, 01:21 PM
Well mine was given by fellow Racers for my driving style (low flying with hard impacts) and adds with my last name to Cruise Missel (missile would be of course correct but most Germans won`t know the correct spelling +also low flying and hard impacts)

Ralf.

Gnarly Old Dog
02-07-2008, 03:41 PM
Mine's a mixture of things really. When I came back to racing after many years, I figured that I wanted something that was obscure but would have rugged / off road connotations cos that's where all the real racing's at - hence 'Gnarly'. Old, well that's simple cos I am now - well, at least compared to most of you young whipper snappers. Dog simply cos that's what they used to call me at work.

Quite fancy a change now though. "Old Duffa" has a bit of a ring to it....

02-07-2008, 05:31 PM
Well, my first name is Brian.
I chose B44501x racer EX because modified 4-wheel has become my favorite class. The B44 is loved by all racers and it's the world champ, and the 501x is loved by people like Jimmy, AaronR and myself.

I couldnt decide on which car I thought was best so I bought both, Here's a few pics of Albion
ILLNOIS to better explain this. We run mod-4wheel in the wintertime.
Since I have an E-firestorm as well, what is stopping me from racing 2 classes for a change? I have a set of pink taper pins for my truck also...:D

These pics are from the BIG WINTERBLAST race we have every year.
The third pic is pro driver Ben Ellis that I got to meet at Linton IN.
Before the winterblast even happened(last pic), Jeff showed up with this.
Thus influced me to get a 501x, because I got to see one run before I bought me one.

Adam that's awesome, i used to always watch Mcgrath kicking everyone's ass at Berci supercross, what a legend - and he invented the Nak-Nak didn't he? Still popular in freestyle MX now! He was actually racing at the X-games last year too, in the super-moto class but not sure if he is again this year?

Is that the same thing as MX?

Sorry I just dont know much about dirt bike racing.

All I know is he thinks R/C racing is a much safer sport than motocross.
He got hurt in motocross and lost a leg. I fell sorry for him sometimes and help him out

yeah dude MX is short for Motocross ;)

there are a lot of ex old time Motocross riders racing in rallycross as its still engines & dirt but you get to go to work on the monday after racing rather than spending a few days in casualty :(

i'm pretty much crippled by old injuries from MX & Ice Hockey :(

for anyone carrying serious longterm injuries the main benefit of RC is the way it doesn't hurt when you crash

I dunno Adam, remember the old GPA hemets they looked really cool in white with a black visor.

what level were you racing 250's at? single or twin?

showtime
07-12-2008, 10:31 AM
i did what they used to call 250 National
single cylinder 5 speed gearbox (i had a KTM)

there was also 250 ICE single cylinder 6 speed box with the Rotax engine.
plus the awesome formula E 250 twins that were in a bit of a decline back when i was doing it due to the Rotax 256 engine going out of production.
people had started experimenting with Aprilia & Yamaha TZ engines to revive the class which i think was starting to recover a bit about the same time i jacked it in :)

250 karts are awesome, everyone should try it at least once!
more than enough power that nearly rips your head off on pullaway or every gearchange plus brakes good enough to have you out of the seat & up around the steering wheel :o
seriously good fun :woot:

jordi15
07-12-2008, 11:10 AM
Not sure how long ago you were racing Adam .... my brother in law is Mark Powell who was a top 125cc then 250ICE driver in the 90's so my life pretty much revolved around karting back then .... Rissi one week then Cadwell or Donnington the next!!!
Mark gave up racing due to the incredible costs (he has bought a beautiful house in Spain with the money he's saved!) and vowed never to return .......

...... guess what he's just bought?:lol::lol::lol:

showtime
07-12-2008, 11:26 AM
i definitely remember the name Mark Powell :)
i stopped about 98 after a MX injury but i was still going to Rissi every meeting as mechanic for a mate who was racing 125's Mark Todd.
he won most of the club meetings there for a while including the Midland Championships one year :)

just had a quick look on the Rissi site but the results archive only goes back a year :eh?: hardly an archive

i really liked Rissi, good track, great burger van really good club full stop :)

jordi15
07-12-2008, 11:49 AM
Mark was a bit of a 'Boy wonder' at Rissi! ...... I have 2 special memories from those days ... Mark winning the Midland champs in the 125 class driving a 125 Europa (whisper) and beating all of the 125 national and open drivers at the same time on a kart that was at least 20mph slower down the straights and the second was seeing him beat the invincible Chris Stoney to win the British Open (O Plate) at Chris's home track 3 Sisters!!

He has just bought a Formula 1 chassis, bolted one of his old 'works' Rotax's on to it .... went testing at Shennington a couple of weeks ago to check all was ok and ended up quickest of the 22 250's there!!!!!!

My biggest issue now is if he does start racing again how the hell do i fit in Karting with my lads rallycross and touring car racing?:wtf::eh?:

LEGEND
07-12-2008, 04:39 PM
I cant really remember where mine came from, i think i got it off Brett Tarrent, when he was still racing, never actually knew why he gave it to me, but it just stuck then others started to call me it and then the 'LEGEND' was born.:p

Team No Idea
07-12-2008, 05:45 PM
Team no idea was from when i did a bit of motorcycle club racing.
I turned up for my first race in a beaten up escort towing a rickety bike trailer upon which my very well used Suzuki RGV250 sat.
we parked in amongst these huge posh motorholmes and bikg race teams. We had bugger all equipment, a tiny tool kit a jerry can and about £40 to cover us for a seasons racing.............. We looked like a pair of tits and to be honest, we were!
We had no idea what we were doing! And so we called ourselves Team No Idea.
The first race day i was quick........and then crashed
The second race day we had engine failure.......
Then I ran out of money
And that was the end of my racing season.
Great!!!:D
