I'm getting a RTR version via a simple trade soon. Just wondering what I need to convert it to a racing kit version. I know the shocks are obviously different. But googling for a few days didn't generate any info on what are the specific differences between the rtr buggy and the racing kit buggy. Can anyone help answer this simple question?
Just to clarify any doubts: when I say racing kit, I do not mean the SP version. I simply mean the first ZX-5 release kit that was not RTR. So LAW35 is not an option for me. I just want to convert the RTR to a regular ZX-5.
Thanks everyone.
the rtr and zx-5 are basically the same, there has been one or two down the club, and basically, by the time they have replaced the substandard parts for raceable ones, they would of been better spending more in the first place.

Could be that you wont get the one-way or spool options or the inboard toe-in option mounts but I am not 100% sure about that. The new motor mount is plain ali where the ZX-5 kit has a blue anodized one (no big deal there though!).
Have a look around the forum as there are a couple of threads dealing with recommended hop-ups.

Thanks for the replies guys. But I just really need to find out the difference before I start buying replacement parts. I'm getting the rtr as a result of a simple low value trade and I'm not intending to spend much. So I want to be patient and know exactly what I need to change before spending.
Apart from the resin vs metal shocks (and now I know the blue motor mount), I really don't know what else is different between the rtr and the regular kit.
Is the plastic material used in the chassis, arms and other parts different?
Is the rtr fully ball raced?
Did the rtr screw set differ from the regular kit?
Hope I'm not asking too much. Any help is truly appreciated.

the shocks are the main thing, and i expect the rtr is full time 4wd and doesn't come with any one way options in the kit. other than that i think they are pretty similar.
As Scouser said, have a good read through the Kyosho section as there are lots of threads there about the rtr kit and upgrading it.
The main things you will want are the front alloy brace for the hinge pins and possibly an alloy front shock mount holder. the other tip was to get an atomic carbon front shock tower and fit it back to back with the kit one so it is twice as thick.
Rear universal driveshafts would be worth while too.
Make sure you get the new triple cap shocks from the latest kits, not the original lazer shocks. The new ones are much better and don't leak.
The RTR material is more cheap plastic, like the wheels get worn more quick
the lexan car boby will worn too, the chassis is cheap flexible plastic :thumbsup:as well, maybe the screws are made from a cheaper material.
-The driveshafts are different, too. They should be ok for mild motors, though. I bet that they can handle the same motors as the speedo.
-The screws were Philips screws in the original ZX-5 as well, but I would recommend to replace them with hex screws.
-I don't really see the need for an aluminum shock tower mount. The new design is much sturdier than the original Lazer-issue.
Conclusion: Get some proper tyres, the hex screws and maybe the better shocks, and you should be happy about the Lazer. If you intend to run a hotter motor, you might be better off buying a used racing model.
