Indoor Tyre Choice???

Hi All,

I was hoping for some advice/feedback on tyre choice for 2wd buggies indoor.

I have seen that some people run mini spikes, whereas others use mini pins :confused:

I understand that mini spikes are the control tyre for the Nationals and Regionals, but other places use mini pins for their own independant series.

What is the pros / cons of each on indoor for say: carpet only, polished floor only, mixed surface type tracks?

I would have thought that mini pins would be the best bet for most indoor applications, but are mini spikes mainly used by most becuase they are the BRCA's control tyre so most people just stick to these for greater practice/experience??? :eh?:

Hi, pins are generally used indoor on carpet, whereas spikes are used outdoors on astro or grass. Very rarely, if ever are pins used on astro and vice versa.

You're right about the control tyre aspect but regionals and nationals are run outdoors

I'm also new to the 1:10th scene but what most people run near me is:
Schumacher low profile cut staggers on the front in yellow compound
Schumacher mini pins with tubby foam on the rear in yellow compound.
However in my opinion yellow compound on the rear is not needed for high grip carpet and the wear rate is pretty fast. So next time I buy indoor tyres I would get green mini pins instead of yellow.

Our club run a mixture of carpet and polished floor, so I was just wondering as well what the best compromise most people seem to have is for this scenario too??? :eh?:

A lot of people seem to be running mini spikes inside across some clubs, but as stated in my initial post, I thought mini pins would be better? Is it due to excessive wear rates of the carpet sections on yellows, but not enough grip on the polished sections from greens, as to why people don't use mini pins??? :confused:

I find each place is different. Sometimes I'm faster on pins on but others times on spikes. Spikes are more forgiving though. Pins can brake away suddenly :)

Generally the top lads use pins near me for slippy/carpet

I've been faster on pins myself lately too.

If you are running at seaham yellow mini spikes are the best all round tyre. Occasionally if there's more than usual carpet out then pins would be better but generally spikes do the best job..

At Tyne Met all the lads there are running soft full spikes but again yellow mini spikes will be fine..

I realy like the d boot. Nano bite a compount rear and the blockpass.a.compount front in Mixed condititions and worn down in polised floor conditions.:)

I just like to understand the reason behind people's choices and why something work and others don't :eh?:

My dBoots A compound Multibiytes are probably good for 1-2 meetings and I have a set of the softer B compound Terrabytes that are untouched, so will stay on these this month, but will definitely invest in a set of yellow mini spikes for next month (e.g. after pay day :lol:), maybe even a set of mini pins too just to try out, although maybe in green compound?

Are greens not a harder compound than yellow?

I would have thought that in cold, wet conditions you would want to use softer compounds, not harder ones??? :confused:

Greens are more of a different compound, as opposed to harder. They are rubbish on slippy floor though. If you want greens, get them in mini spike so atleast you can use them outdoors in the wet/damp if you dont like em indoors.

To the touch I'd say they greens feel a little harder. They work better than yellows in wet though. Counter intuitive I know but its the rubber type as opposed to hardness.

Thanks for the clarification, like you said seems odd, but maybe the construction is a little more important than the compound for buggies in the wet.

I've seen that Ballistic Buggies are a control tyre choice too, how do these compare to Schumachers for usage, wear and drivability???

Also, is there an advantage to running the Schumacher "tubby" insert as opposed to the standard sized one?
