Asus, not to be confused with Acer, are a very reputable manufacturer. Better known for their motherboards a few years ago, they seem to make good tablets and laptops now too. I had one of their earlier laptops and I'll be honest and say it wasn't a HP, Dell or Sony, but it was certainly equal to or better than most other brands.
Toshiba are a fairly solid make to be honest, but nothing remarkable. Purely on value grounds, I think the middle Asus wins. Depends what the warranty etc is like I guess.

Treat it like lady. Sod warranty, I've yet to have 1 break on me. Home insurance in worst case scenario.

Got the ASUS . Nice piece of kit, certainly wipes the floor with my old one. Windows 8 what's that about , going to take a while to get used too !!!
Was trying Win8 on an old laptop, found ClassicShell (http://www.classicshell.net/) gave me back the sort of start menu I have grown like.
