3 or 4 gears for mid motor?

Hi guys just wondering what you are running as this is my first mid motored 2wd but. I thought they usually used 4 gears but this says to use 3?

Definitely 4 gear in mid motor.

There's significant rational and R&D behind the concept of using a 4-gear set-up, and none (other than some manual writer/translator) suggesting to go against the norm.

I've heard the manual only shows the 3 gear build to avoid any copyright issues, not sure if true though :)
