View Full Version : Tomy the intruder of the 4wd world!

You could say tomy were intruders of the 4wd rc world. I don't think many people at the time expected them to enter the competitive arena. Nevertheless, I think their entries were commendable but unfortunately short-lived.

I never knew about Tomy's cars until quite recently. Anyhow I picked up a runner on eBay from down under. It was being used as a tourer or carpet buggy on foams. It needed a complete strip down before I could get working on it. I also installed hop up options including Kose wheel hubs and universals all around, yz10 black rims, cf upper deck and rear gearbox stay and a new shiny screw kit.

I won't bore you with countless build pics. Here is where I've reached so far.

Sorry about the grainy look of the pics...I'll try to sort out some HD shots later. I think it's looking pretty trick so far. Tranmsision is really smooth. Not much to go now!

I have an intruder that is basically as new apart from the bumper..

Have run it indoors once and it felt quite good, but as spares are possible to find its destined to live on a shelf :(

I've got a bunch of spares, but like you I don't think I'll run it heavy.

Wow, nice buggy!!!
Never seen one in person, so one question; Does the belt adjust by turning those disks on both side of the diff? Are those perforations offset from more to less adjustment?

Great build you have going here. I am still yet to witness one of these cars on a race track. They certainly have all the potential of a fine vintage racer just begging for a sniff of dirt.
I watch your thread with anticipation.

Naushad
04-07-2013, 05:49 AM
Yes you are right. This is how you adjust the belt tension but it's a little fiddly as once you have achieved the desired tension you need to use a screw to fix it in place! As you can imagine, the screws are really small.

Probably the same deal as found on all the early Schumacher buggy diff eccentrics.

Naushad when I sold my new Intruder I kept the set of mounted foams - the wheels won't fit anything I have, do you want them?

But let me have some pics first just in case I already have similar.

Thanks.

I sold one to Keith on here a while back, mine was a totally standard original intruder. This one seems to have a fair bit of CF and looks like it's coming along great. The wheel adaptors do look yokomo, the originals had a fiddly large wheel nut and a plastic molded spanner. The diff adjusters are the eccentric cam types as seen on early schumachers as you say and had silly little retaining screws. The overall design I thought was very good, transmission and centre one way similar to the ys870 dogfighter.

Keep it going:thumbsup:

This is my Intruder ready to run, I have run on grass at my local club but split a front wishbone, i seem to remember they were a bit weak along the moulding line.
It ran quite well, I,am going to try it without the epicyclic spur gear as it was a bit weird, kept turning in really sharp off power:confused:

I ran one back in the early Nineties , i replaced the front tower with a carbon fibre version.

However that broke , then replaced both shock mount's with anodized alloy versions.

Very nice car to run .

I'm now looking for some attachments for the front shock shafts to attach to the ball ends on the suspension arms. I'll then get the servo in place and cut the body to size. I've only got the Adonis repro decals, but littlevette on rc10talk has original intruder ex decals which are probably a better match.

Guys I did a hi res scan of the nip intruder decals before I sold it. The shell you have Naushad is the Intruder which I had.

Email me and I'll send to you. Then you just need to find someone who will print them! If struggling I can maybe get the guy who did my masami cat decals to print them.

I actually did them for myles who sells the adonis repro decals on eBay but he mustn't have done them yet.

The alloy bits weren't made by RPM. Not sure who made them. All I know is that you could get a massive amount of alloy bits for it.

Intruder EX (I want!)

I think?

Dan
Intruder - original buggy
Intruder Adonis - cheap low spec alloy chassis, plastic shock version
Intruder EX - Intruder with updated suspension arms

Then there's the Intruders second cousin, the Xpress Striker. After Tomy sold the Intruder design to their Hong Kong distributors they created Xpress and sold a carbon chassied wide tourer version of the Intruder EX.

Thank you for clearing that up. I didn't realise the Tomy Adonis shell was actually the original Intruder design carried over. For some reason I was under the impression that the EX was the original car.

Hi. Thanks for your comment.

With sub-c saddles it feel light...say compared to a yz10 '94. But I'm sure lighter still compared to the alloy based 4wd chassis.

Naushad

I have made a little progress today.

Found suitable fixings for the front shocks so they could attach to the suspension arms.

Fixed up rest of the electrics including a ko propo ps2000 FET servo and sub c saddle pack. I also fixed the eccentric diff housings. The front belt has been set a little tighter than the rear.

I have also temporarily fixed the undertray though the shell is going to be a little difficult as there are no cut lines. Undertray was hastily cut but I will smoothen this out later. The wing is not the original one but a nice alternative I think.

Naushad

Right! All finished now!

Using the net as reference I managed to cut the body to fit! I used different pictures to get an idea of the cut lines. It wasn't very difficult.

I had the Adonis repro decals so used what I can for the shell. I think the end result is really impressive! However, I have been working on getting some repro intruder decals printed, and I'm just waiting on some samples to determine the quality.

So stay tuned!

I loved my intruder
I swapped the hubs for yokomo dog fighters
Because the hub nuts was a pain to get hold of
But Graham's pits stop in Northampton used to stock every thing for them
As his son was a team driver
Gpm made ever part in aluminium wish bones hubs etc
It was so much faster than the boss cats and the dog fighters
I've had mine for over 20 years and still the best car I've driven
