I was asked to post the spec of the hexacopter I'm currently using so figured I'd start a thread to show off your machines.

I'll post detailed photos of mine next week but in the mean time the spec I'm running is:

DJI 550 with Aerial Media Pros 650 heavy lift conversion
Aeroxcraft landing gear
Avroto 2814 motors
Opti 30A speedos
Graupner 11x5 e-props
Original NAZA with GPS
Turnigy 9x transmitter with ER9x firmware upgrade
4s 4500 lipo
Fatshark Attitude SD goggles
Sony 25, 3.6mm lens fpv camera
Immersion transmitter and spiro (mushroom) antennas
EzOSD transmitter, receiver and battery voltage regulator (on screen display)
YUN-1 brushless gimbal mounted on iris batwing plate
FPV model Alexmos gimbal controller
GoPro Hero 3 Black in metal skeleton cage, not clear plastic case

It's a beast!

What landing gear is that pal. Will it also fit a 330?

I reckon the landing gear is a must for me, as it gives it a little more crash area absorbtion ( if thats even a word lol )

Yes I've succumbed to the dark side and decided its better than the Yun1 gimbal

EZOSD is really cool, I like it, plug and play, all the info you need nice and clear. I'm really happy with the rig at the minute, it's flying better than it ever has done, and that's even with 2 x 5000mah lipos that weigh a tonne!

Yes I'll bring it if I'm not working weds night :)

some fantastic looking machines here. I'm wanting to get into Quads but have no prior experience at all. I'm looking for something which is ready to fly with minimal setup required to see if I'm going to be able to fly - before throwing silly money at it. I have a GoPro Hero 3 - and mainly want to record aerial video. I came across helipal and have been looking at the Storm Drone 4

http://www.helipal.com/product_info.php?currency=GBP&products_id=8914

would this be a suitable "starter" quad ? or is there anything else out there RTF with very little setup ?

Cheers

The DJI phantom is the perfect machine for you :)

Plus one for the phantom , I got one as a gift , never flown anything before and this thing is brilliant ! The go pro fits well , just make sure you balance your props and you'll really cut down on the "Jello" effect when filming !!

Easy to fly , and has a brilliant return home feature if your nerve goes or you lose signal !!

Just one tip , I've put a notice on mine saying
"Cash reward if found" then my mobile number ! Don't fancy losing best part of a grands worth of kit if I lose the thing with the camera on !!

I'm still doing research on this topic and have been looking at a Hex. Not sure whether to play safe, spend a bit extra and go for a DJI 550 based around a Naza GPS with a DEVO 7 (Walkera) radio or a 550 Clone based on an APM 2.5/9 with a Turnigy 9x radio ??

My budget is no more than 550 RTF and I notice that Helipal are now offering a storm drone 6 GPS within my budget completely setup/balanced and RTF out the box.

Not sure if an APM system would be too difficult to start with ? I've heard that there are more features like Autopilot but would require alot more undertanding and tinkering to get the best out of it.

Looked again closely at the DJI Phantom, but I'm just not convinced, I think I would rather have something that is more upgradable.

the helipal storm drone 6 GPS at the moment is what I'm considering

http://www.helipal.com/storm-drone-6-gps-flying-platform.html

does anyone know of any UK based people/companies who build and setup these machines to order ?

Thanks

Hi mate.

Can you already fly a quad?
Can you build it yourself?

If you can - do both, then buying parts will be much cheaper. The Uk shops I have looked at charge lots for ready to fly 450 / 550's etc.

I'd skip the Phantom if you like to tinker and plan to add more to the quad.

Storm Drone Hex looks nice - i'd skip the Storm Drone Quad though - it's an upside down 450!

There are too many choices - what I have learnt is this stuff is like the Buggies - buy cheap, but twice, or three times and in the end you end up buying what you should have bought to begin with!

If you go down the Hobbyking KK2 route, it's much, much cheaper and you won't feel bad about crashing it or loosing it!

I started with a 330, then I got a 450 to use with a Go Pro. Tried a few cheap Gimbals and realised you need to buy a decent brushless gimbal to get decent footage as well as a well balanced machine. I've quickly realised the 450 isn't going to cut it for video as I want really stable footage - so i'm building a 550 and going to add a Tarot Gimbal. If that doesn't work i'll sack it all off and just fly my 330 for fun as it's a blast :)

Good luck deciding.

I just couldn't resist the urge!

Following this flight part of oOple has lead to a drained bank account and several neglected cars left wanting parts. Hobbyking got raided and I now have my own 450 quad :)

I've done hardly any flying up to now but i really fancy a go at some aerial filming and hopefully some FPV. Anyway this is my creation, finished the build and setup today but now waiting for some calmer wind conditions to go and give it a fly. Looking forward to it!

thanks Andy for the info.

I have no flown a quad or hex before, as for the build, it does look fairly straight forward and I'm good with a soldering iron, however the part that concerns me isn't the actual build but the setup of the radio and flight controller, I think at this point I'd be lost.

Still looking at a RTF setup, hopefully based around a 550. I haven't looked into the KK from Hobbywing, so I'll do that tonight and see how this stacks up against the naza and APM options.

Thanks

I didn't realise you were building one of these Adam! - No wonder you have no money for going buggy racing Lol!

Perhaps you ought to wait for Rich to get back to give it it's 1st test flight - I hear he's pretty handy with flying things?

Personally, although I find these things very impressive (& I like the idea of the FPV side of things) I prefer my planes to have wings ;)

Don't worry - its a lot easier than you'd think. If you build it / set it up following guides on-line and get the motors spinning in the right directions it's hard to do much wrong.

The KK2 is a breeze to set up as it has the on screen lcd so you can see what's what re the radio inputs working correctly. You can do all this with everything connected (the props off for safety) and when you are confident it's all ok - put the props on and fly it :)

I can't speak for other flight controllers as I don't have experience of them - but I guess they are all similar. KK2's lcd screen means you don't have to keep connecting it to a PC though.

I had a few issues with my crazy all in one esc - but once i'd re wired it - the Quad flew perfectly straight away.

This is the reason my TC5 is still waiting for some new out-drives Dan! lol

Took it for a brief fly tonight, still too windy to be honest but I just HAD to have a go. Took it very easy and was more nervous than i've been in a very long time time but it went ok. Just flew gently back and forth trying to get a feel for the controls, again very tricky with the wind but did ok. Judging orientation was a bit tricky at certain angles so im certainly considering some LED's and maybe even a bright foam ball to help spot which way its going. It ended when a gust got hold of it and took it over the next field, spent a few seconds trying judge which way it was facing but decided it was better to bring it down where it was. Fortunately it was over a corn field which helped it survive the landing which albeit a level landing was a bit too quick. As it hadn't gone too far away I was able to walk to the general landing site and the use the ARM/DISARM beep to locate it. Not ideal so i think the next move is to perhaps mount a voltage alarm to a spare channel so I can trigger it if I need help locating again, this is where the Naza's GPS return to home would be invaluable!

Great fun tho :D

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__36295__Signal_loss_Alarm_Lost_Plane_Finder_EU_wa rehouse_.html

Signal loss Alarm & Lost Plane Finder, simple device that plugs into any servo/rx port, will detect the loss of TX signal and emit a loud 85dB alarm. Ideal for warning you if you have not turned off your RX power supply while in the pits, or if you are having trouble finding a model in the long grass, simply turn off your TX and within a minute, the alarm will sound!

Looking cool Andy !

Is this your third different machine , or third rebuild with existing components ??

Went flying again this morning , very windy , again !!
Phantom was okay and the footage was satisfactory !

The more I look at these threads the more I realise how much I'd like to upgrade from my phantom !!
I'm glad it didn't cost me anything in the first instance , it's amazing how quickly you outgrow things !!

In the meantime Andy , I see you've experimented with gimbals , was wondering if you fancy selling any that would fit my phantom as my GoPro is hard mounted at present with a small piece of Sorbathane sandwiched between the mount and the quad , works well , no jello but I want to upgrade !

Agghhhhhh more money ! These things are more addictive than cars !

andys
18-08-2013, 06:51 PM
Hi Graham.

Re Gimbals - I currently am using the HobbyKing one that uses servos. It works really well at keeping the horizon and the camera level, what i've struggled with is very slight vibrations. Not really Jello, i've got rid of that problem by 'hard-ish' mounting the camera / gimbal and using some rubber stand off vibration mounts.

With the slight vibrations, my worry is that even with a brushless gimbal setup, I may still not get a non rock solid image. I'm currently running Sunnysky motors and RC Timer Carbon Props which are balanced on a proper balancer - which helps massively :)

The video is great after I run it though After Effects warp stabilizer and i'm almost happy with it. That said I don't want to but a 300 GoPro Black and a 100 ish brushless gimbal and it not be lots, lots better !!

So - I'm building a 550 frame, with 6 x Sunnysky motors and carbon props. I've gone for the Aeroxcraft landing gear as it looks like the best one out there for mounting a gimbal. Probably going to go Naza Lite with it too, then put on my current servo gimbal and see if it's more stable / better than on my KK2 450. If it's good i'll stick - if not it's then Tarot Brushless Gimbal ismy last hope. If that fails, i'm sacking it off and flying for fun without a camera !

And yes - this is my 3rd build, started with a 330, then a 450, now building a 550. I contemplated a bigger Quad, but everything I have read says the 550 is more suited to video as it's more stable. Hopefully that will be the case :)

GrahamH7060
18-08-2013, 07:34 PM
Thanks for the info Andy , I might just keep with what I've got & look to upgrade the gimbal arrangement if I decide to upgrade my quad too !

Oops.

Spot the mistakes made today...

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15062770/oops.jpg

Found that the 450 with 10inch props can't fly / skim the ground like the 330 can! Scared me to death as I took the ends off 2 props - obviously as it was so close to the ground, no other damage.

330 - just got a bit all over the place as i'm trying to fly more aggressively. It took a beating before finally a barrel roll killed an arm.

Also - flew for a while on 1.6++ which is hairy at full tilt, sideways sweeping across the ground with the quad at around 60 or 70 degrees sideways.

Flying these things on a Naza, or even a KK2 with 'soft' settings and self level on is quite easy. Flying 'properly' is a whole different beast. I think that after today, it's going to take some time to master this....

Col
20-08-2013, 08:31 PM
You're probably aware of it, but you know if you turn mixing off on 1.6++ it's exactly the same as std self level?
It seems really boring after having mixing on, though!

andys
20-08-2013, 08:56 PM
Yeah Col.

Had a good play with the mixing - but on the 330 not the 450.

I needed to go down to 20 on stick scaling as it was nuts!

I know what you mean about it being boring flying normally - its a different ball game this acro mode. At least with 1.6++ it levels when your centre the sticks - I've no idea how I'd fly it if this didn't happen - I'm a long way off full acro flying !

Col
20-08-2013, 09:09 PM
The recommended way is to leave stick scaling as is, and add expo on the tx. Haven't flown enough to comment on which is best - my 450 is in a box in the garage in exactly the same state as the last photo!

AdamBurgess
20-08-2013, 10:14 PM
So, I had couple of flights with my 450, the wind was a problem though and still struggled to work out which way the thing was flying. Had a heavy landing which resulted in 1 broken arm, thankfully everything else was fine. So I started the hunt for some new arms but came to the conclusion that just buying a whole frame kit was probably the most cost effective way of getting spares. After some looking around I decided to get a TBS Discovery clone as the larger longer frame would help with packaging everything in neatly and also the might help work out the direction it is flying in. The result is awesome, had several decent beginner'ish flights and I was much more confident flying it from the first go. Been out with it the last 3 evenings now and loving it, hoping to get home and get out out a bit earlier tomorrow as the light has been starting to fade by the time i've been getting out.

Some video, not very exciting but i enjoyed it :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDvS609gc1w&feature=share&list=UUTn903oQWUi7olzIZ2XJl3g

Went to flying field tonight with 330.
KK2 1.6++ mixing all set up.

KK2 powers up on the USB, but still nothing on the screen. The frame around the LCD lights up though. No beeps, no noise when it powers up and no beep when I press the buttons.

Is it dead :(

Not necessarily...

I've got to go to work now, but have a search through the kk2 thread on RCG http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1675613
This has happened loads before and most seem to revive them. Means soldering the board, though I think.

Still need to play around with the camera mount - but it's getting there...

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15062770/450.jpg

Nice setup there Andy, I finally got myself a DJI 450 with a cheap hobbywing controller, still learning to fly, only got manual mode just now and it is setup for my Turnigy 9x. Hoping to upgrade to a naza next month which will hopfully give me some assistance with the controls.

What landing gear is that you have installed ? I tried a cheap ebay 15 special that looked similiar but it broke on my first time out, realising now that I'd probably be better practising my flying without landing gear as it is a big easier.

Also what is that you have used as a canopy ? it looks really good.

Landing Gear was from Ebay - it's not great and I have since taken it off!

I bought the carbon fibre landing gear set that's on ebay (made by Tarot) and it weighs nothing - taken that off now though also as i've taken all the camera stuff off the 450!

The lid is simply a tupperware that I cut down and then re-gluded to make it less deep.

Keeping the KK2 away from harm and any moisture in the air is very important. I killed the KK2 on my 330 after flying it upside down into the grass :(

Yeah I just bought the Carbon Fibre (Tarot) landing gear but it doesn't seem to be much stronger than the cheap 15 ebay special I had broken previously. Still learning at the moment without any skids installed, but once I get my naza next month and all setup I'm hoping to fly a bit better and one day before long, I'll have the confidence to install my GOPRO underneath and go for some video footage.

Raymond.

Yep - I broke the Tarot landing gear with a heavy landing - repaired it though :)

With the Naza, I think you have to be doing something silly, or actually fly into something (Like a goal post.. Neal :) ) to do any damage. It won't let you get it 90 degrees and hurtling towards the ground whilst doing flips :)

To be fair a KK2 with sensible settings on and auto level is pretty safe. I put the GoPro on the 450 with no problems.

Cheers Andy,

only been flying a week now, and already have a couple of breakages, awaiting another DJI 450 frame kit to arrive, I thought it would be better to have a full kit as spares instead of buying each part individually due to the small difference in price, so far though I'm loving it, almost becoming more addictive that the buggies.

.

Trust me in manual mode it's very east to get into a world of sh1t with the naza. I've done the fully inverted into the ground in a split second trick. Atti mode, with self levelling I can still get out of shape, but GPS mode is lovely and very safe. The only times I've had issue sin gps mode are when a motor connector has failed, or I've hit a goalpost ;-)

Naza is more enjoyable to fly with at this stage of my flying experience, you can just enjoy buzzing round the skies with no stress.
KK2 is ok but dont blink or your copter is dead!
The KK2 is pretty much the same as the naza when in manual mode, minus the self level on the naza.

Cant say i notice any difference with the naza v2 and lite. The v2 on the hexa is ideal though, as i have pre ordered the iosd mini and bluetooth for it. These dont work woth the lite.

Hi Neal.

Not sure if I can make it yet fella - lots on :(

Flew the ecks behind our house on a small patch of land and it's a right handful !
I've turned down stick scaling etc, but even with self level on it wants to turn up it's own rear !
It's going to take some getting used to. First proper flight, I bailed and crashed it into some serious nettles & brambles, took me ages to dig it out!

Flew the ecks in a proper big field today. Flies just like my 330 did :)

Tried the KK2 for a bit with auto level mixing / off, but it's too scary, so decided to leave auto level on and practice some more. With auto level on, when you are really moving, you can kind of let go / centre the stick and you know the quad will level up rathe than hitting the ground - much easier.

I don't think my brain / thumbs will ever be quick enough to fly full acro how on earth people fly these things at speed and react so quick is beyond me. At full beans, if this goes wrong it's in another postcode before I know it !

Also - ordered some 12amp Afro esc's for it from the King of Hobbies :)

I have just built my DJI F450. Its complete with Naza Lite GPS and the DJI landing legs. Currently using Turnigy 2200mah but looking to upgrade shortly.

Had a few flights with it and it is really good, simple to set up and super stable - love it!!

Just need a Tarot Gimbal now and to upgrade my Gopro 2 to a 3 Black -

Col with my limited experience I would say that they are great so far. I was aware that the proflight gear looked very similar to the turnigy, I actually bought a RTF 450 clone from proflight and started to learn how to fly. I quickly upgraded to a naza lite which made things a whole lot easier to fly once of course I worked out how to set the naza up with my 9x.

I can't complain about the power of the motors, very good even on my small 2200mah lipos. I just want to try and achieve 10 mins flight time but with a gimbal and gopro - I'm going to need higher lipos, I'm sticking with 3s, but going to go for 4000 or 5000, but I'll need to watch the weight difference.

On the whole, I'm loving the F450 - it started as a clone frame, but after a few mishaps during learning, I've since replaced the whole frame with a genuine DJI 450 which I think is a bit stronger, the plastics are better.

I'm going to be scratch building 2 quads, first is a H copter that I've started building. I'm just waiting on the electronics coming for it. The I think the H copter might be a bit on the heavy side if it is I'll just drill a load of holes in it.

The other one I'll be building is a lightweight all carbon X copter but I'm still waiting on my carbon fiber sheet and tube for the build.

After seeing Neal and James flying their multi copters around at the Invernational this year I thought I'd get involved.

It was flying great on the Taranis. Fantastic radio.
I just went a bit over the top in manual mode, and lost it in a split second. Managed to find something solid flying over a huge field of moorland.

After all this, the gopro didn't capture the impact, or if it did, the clip was lost with the power cutting off. The gopro lost it's battery on impact, so I guess any buffered data was lost before it was saved to SD card.

Yeah Col, the event you saw, I only managed 2 arms ;-)

I think my mates car bumper took the brunt of it, then it hit the ground. Good job it's a company car. To be fair, the bumper mark will t-cut out. Ford bumpers are pretty bendy.

Lesson learned. Leave naza manual mode well alone, even with endpoints at 50% and 40% expo.

Thanks Andy, i may take you up in that offer.

The motor has failed when its come detached from the arm. i had cable tied the wires to the frame, the outer red/blue wires have come loose as its moved, but the centre black wire has stayed tied, so pulled out of the motor. On investigation its sheered at the base of the coils where its mostly insulated with glue/resin, and broken where the wires are exposed slightly before they are soldered to the silicone wire. It can't be fixed without un-bonding the coils from the base, and won't go back together well enough to trust afterwards.

hmm, I'd stay well clear of manual.

I'll get the kk2 F330 flyer sorted for kicks, keep the TBS for video and fpv when I get the gear.

Hows your naza now Andy? sorted? how have you got in with you dabble with fpv?

Got my 5.8Ghz Video link all set up (only on the bench) and got a super cheap monitor from Banggood so I can see what the GoPro is shooting. Not using it for fpv - just for framing video / shots.

Also got a GoPro Black from amazon on Black Friday Lightning sale for - 229.99 - well chuffed with that :)

Hi all,

Just thought I would share my Hex with you all. I bought a DJI Phantom 2 with all the goodies, Zenmuse 3d, fpv, and so on. After about 30 mins of ownership I realised that this was just not up to the job (chocolate and fire guard springs to mind).

So I decided to let that go and bought an F550 ( the newer E300 one ) and liked this a lot more. I added the AeroxCraft landing gear, Zenmuse 3D, GoPro, Naza V2, a cheap FPV system. However the most important thing I did ( for me ) was to break into the GoPro and ad a remote shutter release cable meaning that I could compose my aerial shot using the FPV and then remotely release the shutter.

I am know waiting for my DJI S900 with A2, Light Bridge,Zenmuse GH4 and Lumix GH4. I am planning on somehow bringing her out of my man cave and saying something like " oh, this old thing....... no I have had this for ages.......it just looks very very clean........"

I have added a pano I took with the F550 in the evening. The light was low ( you can see the sun just catching the church in our village ) but the GoPro did quite a good job of catching the image.

Got one.

Capable machine, with a weak spot in both the main and tail motors.
Great lifting capacity, pretty fast (for a 4ch heli), utterly incapable of banking left.
If you've got the space (it likes alot) then it's a good bird.
Can be bought cheaper if you're prepared to wait:

This is the old model now. There is a brushless version out which obviously solves any potential motor issues (that mine has never suffered with)
