Looks almost identical to durango and yes i know durango bought them out. Question is the gearbox, are they using the same crappy design layshaft on the dex210 or something more solid?

Serpent bought in to Gerd Stranges Durango project but then went bust, I beleive Serpent are now owned by an Asian company and have nothing to do with Team Durango.

the 2wd was developed way after the deal for serpent to produce the durango 410, would have been the serpent s500,

Durango are also owned by a far aisan company!Durango, Axial and Arrma were all sold to Hobbico 18 months ago, so they are technically US companies now. Kingstar in Taiwan still makes the kits though.

What exactly did they do right? What is so rare? - spindle carriers remind of something from the far past but the gullwings? what is so special about them?

Well most brands seem to add the gull wing to the arms and forget to change the geometry of the shock tower. The end result is just wrong.

Took receipt of my Serpent Spyder kit on Friday morning... went together really well - one of the best buggy kits I've ever built (and I've built my fair share!)

Finally got round to spraying and mounting the shell last night so all thats left is to find somewhere to run it

Wacker 2
15-10-2013, 10:14 PM
Mes... a decent set of nut drivers would definitely help make the build easier.

And Adey, Serpent are releasing a mid motor car... I haven't seen any pictures of the mid motor kit but I've heard release will be around November.

Nice to see a manufacturer make a purpose built rear motor car and purpose built mid motor car as apposed to trying to fumble one kit together that will allow for either option.

I've already got my name down for a mid motor car so I shall get one of the first ones available... I will be sure to post pics as and when I get it.

Then I look forward to seeing you all trackside

...

Right, quality tools are always a must. The 4.5 was the only on I did not have in my tool box already, fixed that! As for the Serpent line of cars, I am mainly looking forward to the 2WD Short Course Truck. Our 2WD SC Stock class is by far the most popular, and I'd like to join the crowd again. None of the currently available SCTs is my cup of tea. Yokomo will probably not enter the SC competition anytime soon, and if a Kyosho RB-6 based truck was to be released next year, it would probably cost a fortune...

Hi all, I do the serpent promo websites and the teamserpent sites, I am going to build the car today and tomorrow and will post updates if you are interested go to the page linked below.

I have started the build page and will continue to build the car this afternoon :-)

Link to Spyder Build page (http://www.tomhow.com/car-builds-3/serpent-spyder-srx2-build/)

Any questions you have about this and the mid motor version please ask I will get answers directly from Billy and Ronald at Serpent HQ for you.

I do know there are a lot of upgrades arriving soon for this one including diff gear set if that is your pleasure, it can directly replace the ball diff setup.

Anyway let me know if you have any questions that need answering.

The last pic is of a few upgrades and parts I ordered with more coming ;)

Mid motor version by end of November beginning December

SCT will be early next year as it will be based on the buggy anyway so not too much design work to do.

mes
28-10-2013, 06:02 PM
I had hoped for an X-mas SCT release, but not a problem - there are still so many Yaiba Racing and Avid RC parts I can buy and try to make the SC10 a proper truck, before it will become a short course buggy... ;)

Yes and very well. I think both schumacher and serpent are spot on purpose built chassis and not a compromise.

mes
29-10-2013, 05:26 AM
Compromise was probably needed for regulations under which you are allowed to change everything except of the chassis and conditions might change between rear- and mid-motor, i.e. ROAR regulations on non-sugared clay/dirt tracks. In our region, we have a mix of dirt and astro tracks, so for the average Joe a compromise car isn't too bad. However, there are still many rear-motor cars out there run by people who just don't care about their lap times so much.
For avid racers, dedicated cars are the way to go, including converted 4WDs for very high grip conditions - see TeamC, the upcoming Xray and all those conversions out there.

TomHow

I have a news update on the Mid motor buggy and the SCT.

The Mid motor buggy needs to be tested more which is what they are currently doing at Serpent, they have told me that the release will be delayed end of December or early January. They want it to be a winner before releasing.

As for the 2WD SCT this is scheduled for March 2014.

Has anybody tried the Spyder on Astro or carpet? I'll probably want a new 2WD next year (or for Christmas :p) and still wonder whether to get a more universal rear motor car for the many dirt tracks in our region or a dedicated astro car for my home track, which will have higher grip next year. After two years with the great Yokomo, it might be time for something new, and the only convertible buggy I'd consider (RB-6) is too expensive for my liking.

Gear diff maybe standard, if not available as option. I am hoping gear diff std as will be better for carpet, not sure which is best for astro?

Same drive system as with rear motor.

Reason for separate mid motor according to Billy is that there are too many compromises to make a convertible car as opposed to separate model. I for one am happy to have two different cars, makes my life easier.

Expect January for release of MM buggy and hopefully 2 weeks for gear diff.

Tried my RM Spyder on carpet last week and it was awesome, great grip and corner speed was good so can't wait to try the MM :-)

Tip for build of front steering assembly.

Do not use the aluminium washers they say in the manual between steering and bulkhead, use these washers instead #600180 from 811 EP buggy, (they are washers from inside shock and went between piston and shaft)

http://serpent.com/product/600180

Of course if you use aluminium or brass bulkhead no washers required

Hi Lee
Very good out of the box, I think you only need the alu/steel idle gears.

Other than that some springs but that can be gotten later or use other brands if you have them.

I can recommend the gear diff (have heard about dodgy balls in the original ball diff but those can also be replaced, and depends on how you take care of it as well. ) and maybe the alu/brass bulkhead, or use some stick on weights.

+1 with Tonys setup.
I am going to test another from the last EOS and will report back.

Standard fits, but if you don't get the weighted bulkhead then you will have more room with a LP servo to attach weights.

Hello
Just a few words regarding my SRX2 mm that I bought on Saturday 7 Feb

The car I could not have faulted it, it jumps and lands really well, it carries good tight turn speed. brakes very well in a straight line, and rides the Mendip surface as good as anything I have driven there that includes Schumacher, RB6, Yokomo, Durango and a B5.

I only decided to buy the car on the Saturday, after I had popped into South west rc to buy a couple of pairs of tyres.

Talking to Rob Paynter at South West Rc he mentioned that Neumann had joined Serpent as a factory driver along with Strang the designer of the 210 and 410, I left the shop and got to Mendip for some practice with the 210, I sat in the car for a few minuets then went back to the shop bought the SRX2 MM kit and a set of spares wheels and left for home.

I got home about 14.00 started the build and finished it a 22.30 so it really was almost straight out of the box so to speak.

The next day was Sunday 8 Feb, so up at 06.00 and off back to Mendip for the R7 club meeting.

Q eight for the main A final and went up to forth place by the flag at six minuets, very pleased and best position ever in a A final.

Neale

I earlier had a bit of a on power push problem, this as well as a shock change helped out a fair bit.
I will tho try the shocks and rest of the setup on the stock chassis.

I went with the ball diff for a while and thought that it worked really well, but it got a bit gritty so I changed to the gear diff (unknown oil/grease just now) and the high diff position.
Im really liking it after some frustrating earlier testing.

I was a little loose rear untill the slicks warmed up

Gents, just tried tony's low grip set up and it worked really well at Worksop. I am not in the top heats but the car gave me confidence to push harder than before and I finished in a position I was well pleased with.

The whole front end is exactly the same on the rm & mm.
On the rm the chassis is totally different as is the shock tower, gearbox casing and rear wishbones.
Uses the same driveshafts and hubs etc.
