Dirt inserts?

Anyone know what inserts the top guys were using at the Invernational? They were blue moulded thats all i could see.

I think that was only in 4WD, 2wd I've seen many 2 stage inserts

I was running the JConcepts 'Medium' moulded inserts in the back of mine, with 'Firm' in the fronts. I tried a set of the standard foam's in 4wd to see how they compared but they only lasted 3 runs before the insert started to break down and the tyre lost grip despite there being plenty of tread left.

Moulded all the way :)

Probably explains why my 'cars' got worse and worse.

I ran 1 set of tires all event with stock inserts in them. Whoops

I run these:

with my holeshots in 4wd and 2wd rear, and these: http://www.rccarshop.co.uk/index.php/wheels-tyres/1-10th-off-road/inserts/aka-1-10-4wd-buggy-closed-cell-front-tire-inserts-2.html in 4wd front. Ran cut foams in 2wd fronts.
They don't break down and the tyres run true and balanced as the inserts are round. The packed-in white foams never seem to run true/balanced, no matter how careful you are cutting them. I'm sure the unbalanced tyre/wheel will affect grip. the tyre carcass certainly seems to expand more on rotation, more than say a Schumacher Yellow, anyway.

Craggy, Bradders and the other CML/Proline sponsored guys seemed to be running 2-stage foam inserts in them, with a new set of tyres per race (I was told). They were certainly gluing up a lot of tyres.

That's interesting and the severity of which is something I may have under estimated. My car was pretty good all day Saturday when I was constantly changing tyres to try out the different insert options. I settled on standard inserts after rd 5 of qualifying. Ran the same set of tyres for Rd5 and leg 1,2 + 3 of the finals - although the tyre wear was low, the car got more and more loose at the rear - I'll have to cut open the tyre and see what the insert is like.

You should be able to feel it through the tyre, when the inserts go bad there's no spring/life to the tyre if you give it a squeeze (that's about the best way I can think to describe it :p ), it just feels dead. Also the standard inserts can sometimes twist in the tyre, where a section of the insert inverts/flips over creating hard and soft spots. This can happen on the first run and ruin that set of tyres!

It's interesting people were using two-stage, I'd been told there was an agreement between the top lads not to use them with them being hard to get hold of and expensive.

We don't have all these issues with minispikes/BB's because the sidewalls are reasonably stiff, the dirt tyres are totally different as they are so soft the insert supports the whole shape of the tyre - not just the middle bit of the tread.

Myself and the other CML/Proline drivers ran pretty much one set of tyres a day on both 2wd/4wd. I ran two sets of rear 2wd tyres all weekend (close-cell then two stage), three sets on the 4wd (close-cell). I also ran the same pair of m3 ribs from last year and will probably use them next year.
Even though the track seemed have less grip as the meeting sent on lap times were faster, go figure!?
