DEX210 - Robinhood, York, Worksop, Yorkshire.

evening all.

i have decided i need to get back into rc racing, i left 1/10th carpet touring car club racing a few years back.

on my doorstep i have robin hood raceway and deerdale tracks, so i am looking at racing 2wd buggy.

after a bit of research i have come accross the Dex210, now i need some advice and guidance. and i understand the dex210 v2 is coming out early next year.

BUT, am i best getting the RTR or the kit version, i have been advised to get BRCA spec stuff incase i race in competitions, which i plan on to in the near future and a lot of practice :) .

for last couple of years i have been using turnigy, nanotech, xerun, hobbywing. can anyone tell me if this stuff is allowed in BRCA and do people actually run this stuff?

i used to be a Novak man years ago, but with buggys i have now idea, i do like my savox servos though.

i am assuming there is only one version of the DEX210, but then its either kit form or RTR form. i dont want to be no speed freak, so the rtr kits seems the way.

any advice or guidance is much appreciated.

Agreed, i've done exactly this and so far i'm well impressed. The problem with RTRs is you usually have to change the electrics almost straight away if you want to do any serious racing meaning they're not as much of a bargain as they first appear, but DEX210s are so cheap from MB Models/JE Spares ATM, buying the kit and fitting decent electrics works out to not much more than the RTR and I enjoyed the experience of building mine.

I,ve never seen a Turnigy nano tech battery on the BRCA list and even though they are extremely popular they are not BRCA legal.

+1 One of the main reasons I went for buggies rather than TCs :thumbsup:

I went for the kit and picked up the Savox servo named above. Picked up a Dualsky 550-MJ speedo and Dualsky 8.5 motor. I run a shorty Vampire Lipo, but to be honest that was because it was the best priced one still BRCA legal.

Just come off my first season of regionals and this spec certainly didn't embarress me at all (my driving skills more than capable of doing that on their own), certainly quick enough to compete mid-pack if I could keep the car on it's wheels :blush:

2wd buggy is (IMO) the way to get back into (cheaper, teaches you good driving habbits etc).

Pop down to RHR on a Wed eve (clubnight) and have a look at what people run (we're a friendly bunch and will happily show you what we run, works etc)

The RTR is a good deal but only if you stick to stock electrics (which with an unboosted 13.5t most will ditch fairly quickly).

My advise whichever car you get, get a kit or a second hand racecar complete with electrics (a season old racecar can be had at very attractive prices).

The BRCA list stuff is handy, but only if you're planning to do nationals/regionals (and as already said mainly nationals). For club level/oople series it's not that important.

4 x shorty nano tech a spec 4200
trying to get hold of a tresery hg450 servo but out of stock every where so will prob use my savox 1258 or 1257.

i am hoping to join you in the next few weeks over at RHR but off on holiday at beginiinng of sept so might not get chance. am i right in thinking that you go over to york in the winter months on a saturday.

one more question, what tyres do i need to run on astro? fronts and rears?

Schumacher Yellow low profile cut staggers on the front and yellow mini spikes on rear for dry weather.
For wet weather ballistic buggy greens all round.

4 batteries a bit of an overkill for 2wd (esp if you bring a charger with you) but better safe than sorry.

Tyre wise the tyres of choise at RHR:
DRY:
Front: Yellow Schumacher low profile cut staggers on narrow rims (no insert)
Rear : Yellow Schumacher mini spike with medium inserts or Schumacher blocks (also yellows with medium inserts) (if you go with mini spikes possibly 2 sets of rears, the blocks last better without a dropping performance)
WET:
Ballistic buggy spikes green compound with medium inserts front & rear

just had a look at my buggy and it already has staggers on the front with no inserts and schumacher mini pins on the rear. i have another set so hopefully will be ballistics or something.

where is the best place to source tyres, i have found MB models to be competitative at the moment.

just soldered all the wires onto my esc tonight, will finish motor off tomorrow. its coming along nicely,

i think i got 4 lipos as i always had 4 when i raced touring cars, due to not having time between heats to charge them.

lastly would a 4200mah shorty last two heats before charging? i understand it depends on certain factors, but just talking in general.

Make sure that they are mini spikes, not mini pins. Minipins are the tyre of choice on carpet, and some really short pile astro. They are not great at RHR (they do work but not as well as minispikes or blocks)
MB is what I use most (good service and reasonable proximity to me)
Battery wise, I use 4000MAh shorties in my H2, with a 7.5t SP combo and reasonable timing and can easilly get 2 heats without charging (I could get a 3rd one if I really wanted to push it).

I had a go on the astro whilst I was at the Invernational running a 7.5 with a 24t pinion and standard spur.....seemed fine.

As long as I'm reading the gearing chart for the 210 right you want to be around 26-27t

the 7.5t v3.0 motor suggested gearing is 7.5-9.0.
24/25 will be a bit under geared, so I would go a bit taller unless you're planning to boost the life out of it.

No, that should be "fairly" Ok.

If you have any issues with temp, the next best thing is to try a smaller spur, a bigger pinion may well see you running into clearance problems.

hopefully the above will give me an all-round selection to try out. so hopefully by the end of next week will be fully kitted up and i can finally start getting some practice in.

how much longer this year do you anticipate RHR to be open? before it goes indoors.

another questions someone might be able to answer me, i have been to robin hood a few times and the large tent has always been up, is this up all the time? and do i need to fetch a pit table, chair etc?

and can anyone clear this up for other tracks.

The tent you refer to goes up for big meetings only. You will need pit table and chair unless you pit out of your boot.

We usually run on Wednesday nights until the nights get dark early or the weather gets too bad.

Yes we really just run as long as the light nights dictate, the last few we'll put the floodlights on so we can run as far into the winter as possible.

The track is open all year for practice sessions though - as long as you arrange them with me first you can come down pretty much anytime :thumbsup:

brilliant, wifes just started a new job and on shifts and with me being on emergency call once a week on different days its going to take some planning so i can get on wednesdays, but would appreciate if i could go other nights just to get some practice in with the buggy and get it set up how i like it.

Fitted the savox 1258 servo tonight and tidied a few things up, just thought i would post my setup up for scrutineering. never done a racing buggy as my background is touring cars, but fingers crossed got some bits right. oh and as you can tell im a bit ocd with wiring colour coding etc.

I can't think of any track that would use that combination of tyres, though. Or are they on just for the sake of it?
The staggers are outdoor (RHR astro for example) and the pins are indoor (York and Worksop).
Some have tried that combo at York, but pins (or spikes) all round work better.

thanks for the positive comments, the tyre combo in the picture is just what came on the buggy, i have just ordered several sets from MB to run at various tracks.

if i come over tomorrow i have some mini spikes to put on the rear until my other sets turn up.

the wiring was a tight fit, dont like the motor connectors, on my past motors they have all be in a line making it easier, but on the SP they are spaced out making it more difficult to wire.

just charging lipos as we speak, i am on emergency call tomorrow night but will still pop over, only live 10 mins down the road.

i might have to take up the offer to borrow a pinion if thats ok.

You could do your battery connector at 90° maybe

I like the shell. If it rubs on the fan you can always turn the esc 90° with the wires inwards (require a resolder) and place the fan infront of the esc blowing through it. I did that and it worked really well.

i have just received the below tyres from MB to fit on some rear durango wheels

#U6786 - Schumacher Block - Rear Tyres - Yellow - CAT pr

now ive got them on the wheels after a fight but how does the bead sit on the wheels, with the block tyres there seems to be a 5mm overhang over the inner and outer wheel edge. my ballistics and other schumacers tyres sit flush with the edge.

have i bought the wrong tyre (beed) for durango wheels or are they meant to be like this. i know they say (CAT) on them so do they not fit durango wheels?

They're fine,just a different side wall that's all. Mini pins fit similar to your blocks on rear but not quite as much over hang. Check out the ones you have on your car.

The conventional modern day tyre size is 2.2 inch, this is what your ballistics etc are. The schumacher blocks are basically a revamped older tread tyre in a modern compound, when they were brought out the standard tyre size was 2 inch, so these tyres still have a diameter designed for 2 inch rims - its not a problem though just fit them onto your 2.2 rims, as you say it will be a very tight fit! Just use a standard insert - I notice you have bought the 'tubby' insert, this will be ok for your modern tyres but too big I think for the blocks, make sure you glue them and you're good to go :thumbsup:

been down to RHR tonight for the first time on the practice day. really enjoyed it,

on arriving i met some old touring car drivers which i havent seen in 4 years so had bit of a catch up.

Charlesk i now know who you are :), i didnt realise how many replies you have put on my thread and how much help you gave me getting set up on here. i was running those tyres from your advice on here.

still need to sort the handling out, but need to re-oil my shocks, and try a few different set ups, need to set my transmitter up properly also. but will get there eventually.

i wont be down again for a few weeks now as i am on holiday, but thanks once again. Great track and on my door step :thumbsup:
