Hi, I'm new to this forum, I have some questions about my old kyosho ultima. I am wondering where I can get some wheels and tires that fit it? I googled it and came up with mixed results. Thanks, I am trying to restore it so that it runs again, it was my first car, its pretty thrashed, I have ca'd the cracks in the body, tho there are some chunks missing, and I painted the outside, so it looks a lot better then it use to, a new one is a lot of money. I will probably get a trinity monster motor and a cheap esc to power it, but it will probably do a lot of shelf time as I can't really find parts for it, only a few from kyosho. Thanks for your help, I have been lingering around for a few days and this forum seems pretty active and really cool.

Hey, thanks, I live in the US. I thrashed on this car, I was like 7 when I got it, now I wish I would have been a little nicer to it. It would be fun to drive it again. I also need the shock clamps.

Hi Stu,

Good to hear from you again, just typed a reply and lost the page doh!

Basically, we are builing the future now as far as I can see. The RB5 is increasing in sales all the time, and at club/regional level appears to be reported as a safe, strong and easy to drive buggy over the B4.

Unfair to comment and not too important as long as it's a good alternative for the customer.

Ground up working close with shops is the best way for Kyosho in the UK. We support shops 100%, and I would personally like to see clubs and tracks on the increase with close support from the local shops around the country.

A team will happen I am sure, but right now the market and everyone is waiting for the NEW KYOSHO INFERNO MP9 (got to plug it:thumbsup:) as this will be the first Race car to be launched from Kyosho sinse I joined.

My area is electric, so let's see what Worksop brings this winter, we are selling more RB5's all the time so I am confident we can start getting results at National level. It's winning at regional level now, and I did not expect that so soon, so one step at a time really.

Team oOple back on RB5's would be cool now we are moving forward in this area:D

Should see you at Worksop as I want to help, but you know where I am if you want to chew the fat.

Take it easy mate, and say hello to your dad for me.

The bodyshell, part number UM18, is still listed as available to order from Kyosho Europe, price is £18.10 :woot:

As an alternative there is a replica Turbo Ultima body available here (http://www.tamiyaclub.com/trades_model.asp?cid=67556&id=5484)

The rear axles use standard 12mm hex drives, so a lot of wheels are available from Tamiya, Academy and Kyosho that will fit on there.

The front axles are the tricky ones, with the axle being 4mm. For my Ultima (http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=50997&sid=297) I use HPI front wheel adapters (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&W=001254575&I=LXN055&P=K) that let me use 4 x 8mm wheel bearings with Tamiya front wheels that have an 11mm hole.

Alternatively to use 5mm axles get the uprights (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXWZ49&P=Z) and axles (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXWZ05&P=V) from the Tower Hobbies ST-15

To fit Associated or Losi front wheels replace the front axles with Kyosho Ultima RB axles, part numbers RS26 front wheel shaft and RS3 knuckle arm, changes the axles to US size which means the wheels and US size bearings will fit straight on.

If you need any spare wishbones and Kyosho have no more, then take a look at the Tower Hobbies ST-15 parts list (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0005p?&I=TOWC55**&P=Z) as it uses identical wishbones and suspension mounts.

Shock clamps are very hard to come by and the correct ones are very expensive to buy. I use a set of shock clamps from a Kyosho Raider buggy. I picked up the complete buggy for less than the price of the Ultima shock rebuild kits, and the raider clamps are a much stronger design.

Hi
I have 3 spoke Schumacher Cougar 2000 wheels fitted to my Ultima - pretty sure that I used standard Schumacher bearings.....

Cougar wheels will indeed fit although the offset isn't the same - I got round this by using a plastic wheel bushing from the original kit inside to space the wheels to the outside. Schumacher also sell the bearings you will need.

Hot Bodies wheels also work on the rear and the dished ones match the Schumacher dish wheels rather nicely.

Cheers

team blue-groove now also offers the original ultima shell.

I have an old stock one myself, but no cage. I was holding onto it awaiting if I'd ever stumble over a cheap cage, or find a buyer for the body. With the current offer on fresh replicas I guess it's back to hoping for a lucky stumble ;)

So what parts would I need to buy to make the j concepts rolux wheels work wth this car? I don't care about the vintage rims, I just want to be able to purchase easy to get rims and tires. I plan to actually drive it, I think the rolux won't look bad on it. Thanks.

Also what were some of the hop ups for this car, I have seen a few items on ebay. Do you know where I might source them from.

Items I need:
New top tray
Screw Kit
Rims and tires
Bearings
Servo mount
New body
Top deck mounting hardware
Shock clamps

I don't really need all this to make it run, but they are some items that need replacement.

Ok, here is my plan, tell me what you think.

Kyosho RB5 front axles, hub carriers/spindles ( not sure if option axles or regular)
Kyosho RB5 rear universals (proline ones to use Jconcepts rulux wheels)
Jconcepts Rulux wheels
Team Bluegroove body
Proline tires.

RB5 shocks? The original ones I have should be fine, but need some kind of shock clamps for them.

Let me know if you think these will not work. From what I can tell I think they will, I registered on rc10talk to talk to the builder on that forum.

Keep in mind that I'm not too concerned with keeping it with original rims and tires and parts, but I would like to keep it with mostly kyosho parts except the rims and tires.

Mr. ed
I agree that my plans are not cheap, that is why I am going to restore it slowly, in about a month I should be better with funds, I am in the military and I am in transition between bases and housing right now, that is the reason for a tight budget between paychecks and buying plane tickets to visit my family between assignments.

I think the 4wd rulux front wheels would fit the rb5 front hex axles? I may be wrong, I saw the guy on rc10 talk had used these parts and mounted hpi wheels on the front, not sure if the hexes are different sizes or what. From what I can tell I think they are 12 mm front hexes? I'm really not sure, I just had a hunch that it may work, please let me know if I am wrong.

I just did a little checking of my own since I was thinking the same thing. The B44 front wheels use a 9.5mm (3/8") hex so that's a no go. However, the Lazer ZX5 wheels would work but they may be a little wide when trying to stretch a 2wd front tire on.

mr. ed
29-10-2009, 05:03 PM
you can cut the inner rib of the zx5 front wheels, or use ultima RB5 front wheels, or cut the inner rib of zx5 sp front wheels. Each option gives you different front widths.
The offset of the zx5 front wheels is a little bigger than on the zx5 rear wheels.

If you like spoke wheels, kyosho also has some. I think they are priced the same as the ZX5 wheels.
Personally I'd go for these:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&W=001534853&I=LXNX94&P=K
and
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&W=001534853&I=LXNX95&P=K

They're a nice match, with wide offset in the rear just like the original ultima.

PS: yes the RB5 uses 12mm hexes, hpi also, traxxas also, but the rulux ones I don't think so.

No, I haven't gotten them yet. They were not listed in the parts that were needed in the other forum for this mod, so I am trying to find the part numbers for it and the retaining screw that holds it in. I will probably download the instruction manuel for the rb5 and look through that to find it.

Do you know if those duratrax wheels are pin drive or hex for the rear ones?

RB5 Front king pin shaft
-LA228
RB5 Front Kingpin shaft retaing screw
-1369 (pack of 10 2.5x5 button head screws)

I also ordered the servo saver set for the original ultima as it was only $4. They didn't have very many parts for the Ultima.

-UM14

Well, got to dads house and dug out my ultima from storage. I have test fitted the knuckle carriers, I haven't got the king pins yet, still in the mail. I used the shim that comes with the knuckle set for fitting to the ultima arm, but it needs different shims because it don't take up all the slack. So I went to the LSH and bought some kyosho shim set, and some E clips to replace the missing and bent ones. I will post more pics about the shims later as they are packed away for the move. Here are some pics of my test fit. Keep in mind that the car is going to be completely torn to pieces and cleaned before reassembly.

You can see I had cut the top plate when I was younger so now it needs replacement. Also where do I find the shock bottoms that thread on to the shaft that mounts to the control arm.

Question about the diff and shocks.
Should I just run these ones? Or is there better alternatives? Should I just run these for now since they will work after I rebuild them and upgrade later? Also will these shocks work with the JG shock towers? From what I can tell the JG were for the longer shocks?

The steering kit is aluminum and looks like it is pretty nice quality.
The upper deck is nice quality as well.

Here is a bunch on pics of the parts, and some close ups. Not sure how I am going to install the steering kit, I know it will work, but I will have to source a servo saver I think, and make a draglink of some sort, any ideas? I think I may swap the bearing out for rubber sealed ones too.

Heres the pics:

Ok, I have the diff cleaned, I used some AE stealth diff grease inside there (clear stuff), I didn't fill it, but put about lil more then half full, is this good? I will run the rest of the tranny dry.

I know there are bearing that go on there before those cups, I am waiting for the bearings, and am trying to keep the stuff together for now.

Got my tower order today!!!!!! Very happy about that, here are some of the other pics as promised as well.

The sanding block is for my boat stuff, I make my own boats out of wood.

Here are some various pics of the stuff I got. Still waiting for the people to forward my kingpins from my last address.

I think I will start installing this stuff on to my chassis that I have as I have not found a new one yet, I am getting a lot of parts here and I don't want to loose any so I will start assembling it and when I find the parts I need I will swap them out, but I have a nice amount of new stuff now to work with, my only gripe is using the old worn out screws I have, I will post pics of some later to show you what I am talking about.

Ok, here is a whole bunch more pics. Don't worry I will be replacing some of the parts I put back on the car, its just I had sooo many parts on my desk, and so much room, this will make it easier for me to build as I can get rid of all the parts that are being replaced and make my work area neater.

After putting it together, I found that the quality of the ST15 parts are not nearly as quality as the kyosho parts. The rear arms and bearing carriers are just fine, but the front bulk head is horrible, I will take you guys up on getting the stock one, the hinge pins didn't really fit because the parts were warped and I don't have a hinge pin reamer, so I put the hinge pin in a dremel and spun it in there to free it up and it worked ok, but I am not satisfied, and I had to drill out the top deck holes on the bulkhead because they were too small, but the 2 peice design sort of looks cool on there. I may have just got a bad casting.

Of course I need to get adjustible turnbuckles.

I'm not sure what the parts that came with the servo mounts are for.

The rhino steering looks like it will work great! I need to put a washer on top of the posts because there is a gap between them and the top deck, and I need to get a draglink.

The rear cvds look like they will work awesome!!!

The only thing I don't like about the JG deck is that they didn't drill holes for a front sway bar and for a body mount.

I need to find a new chassis, because I cut into it as a kid, but I just shined it and the shock towers up for now.

I really like how it is turning out, I just need a few more parts and it will be mostly complete. Does anyone know where I can find a body cage and the part that mounts to the rear shock tower and the motor mount that the body hinges on? I may be able to salvage the body cage.

Sorry if I seem to be typing in random bursts, I am tired its midnight here.

Here are some pics:

Thanks, there is still more work to be done, some of the parts I put back on will be replaced, its just I have only so much work space, so I put it together to keep the parts together, and to make room for my B44 thats coming!!!

I could use the rb5 wheels or these duratrax ones will work, I think they will look pretty good.

You will like the B44, I try to race mine as much as I can.
I have a boatload of new parts I'll be putting on mine soon.

Will you be racing the Ultima as well?
I assume you'll be going to the Vintage Nationals 2010 to race it.
I saw all the videos to the 2009 race on youtube.

I won't be racing either. I would love to race, but I can't find any tracks in my area, I am still on the quest to find tracks, I have a source that says there may be one about 40 min drive. I'm in FT Bragg, NC USA if you know any tracks. I really missed my losi xxx4 that I had, I never raced it but it was fun to drive. I know that the B44 is a great car from what I read, and I would like to be prepared to race once I find a track, I have a t4 ready to go if there are no 4wd classes.

I would like to go to the vintage nationals, I don't even know where that is, I will have to check that out on youtube for sure!!!

Where the hell can I find one....maybe two.

I have an Ultima (turbo I think?) that I want to do up an original body for, possibly two.
Getting repro bodies is easy enough, but I can't find the rollcages anywhere.
Any ideas?

I've been browsing the ebay to see what is the most rarest part to find
for the original ultima. Back in the 80's my uncle raced one in modified and stock. I would like to see if I can find one cheap enough to restore, as kinda like a side project down the road.

That Ultima was my first car, god that brings back good memories! I was just 14 at the time and had to save for nearly a year to buy everything (the car was about £90 at the time, early 90's) I remember drooling over pictures of it for months until the day I bought it and took it home and built it. I raced it at Batley buggy club in West Yorks and on the polished floor it understeered like mad. Coming last, or as near as makes no difference to last, I soon got bored and sold it:thumbdown: wished I hadn't now. Have never touched a model car since but now I'm looking to get back into it soon. (sorry for interupting the thread this is my first post and just finding my feet on here).

ere it is with the wheels on, I am really starting to like how it is turning out!!! It looks pretty good even with that broken up trashed body that I repaired and painted, I may paint the new one similar once I get to that point. I still need the turnbuckles. I may try the RB5 ones as I found lunsford ones all the time on ebay for about $25, I just have to check lunsfords site to see their lengths.

I may need some low proflie wheel nuts for the front because they don't thread on far enough to hit the nylon part. But I may leave them alone, they will stay on.

Here is more progress, here you can see the spacers are available seperately, and how you put one on each side of the hub which makes perfect fit. I also installed RPM blue nylon nuts, mostly because I only needed one, but decided for a little more personallity, the only thing is the socket size used for them is 1/4 instead of metric like all the other nuts, but they are for 4/40 or 3mm, so they are fine. I also replaced most of the rest of the screws except for the front shock tower mouning screws because I don't want to take it off until I get a replacement tower, and the trans case screws because I don't feel like cutting them right now.

It really is starting to come together, still need turnbuckles, tires, new body and cage, shock rebuild parts, shock mount bushing, and shock end, new towers. I'm very pleased how its looking, and the trans is silky smooth unlike before it was nasty feeling.

Got some tires glued up. I have a pic of the tires in the package, but my camera died, so these pics are from my phone, so forgive the quality.

I must say that the losi tires are superbly molded, not flashing, and the letters on the sidewall are crisp, I have seen some proline tires that were not molded very well, like excessive flashing, letters not crisp-fading into the sidewall barely readable, proline are great tires don't get me wrong, but the losi quality is top notch.

I was hoping the front would be more low profile of a tire, but I think it will look ok once I am able to adjust camber.

I have been killing myself trying to find a bearing that will go into an HPI MT Mesh wheel and fit my vintage ultima front hub (imposable)

Could you explain yourself a bit please? Maybe put a detail picture in your post too and some dimensions.
If these are the old star wheels ; they came with a set of adapters to let you put the right bearing for your car.

I also have a vintage ultima in good working order, if anyone wants to buy it let me know. Few spares around as well like extra wheels suspension parts, undertray, all will go together though as I know how hard the spares are to get. Sensible offers considered, I'm in Cheshire UK.
