Mark, turn your widescreen 90 degrees, rotate the graphics display 90 degrees and carry on reading down the page... as you are meant to. Whoever thought we wanted widescreen for computers needs shooting.
Actually widescreen(16:9) sucks in portrait as well as in landscape, it's too bloody long. Bring back 4:3 aspect ratio monitors I say. They were ace. I've got a second 16:10 aspect ratio monitor that I have rotated in portrait for this, it's super for webpage and PDF reading. Reads perfectly down the page and can get a full page of A4 perfectly readable on screen without scrolling. It's is also perfect for when I do picture editing in photoshop. My main 27" 16:9 is crap. I hate it. so much wasted space and not enough vertical resolution.
Widescreen on computers, laptops and now tablets is all about manufacturing cost reduction and making smaller screens sound more impressively sized diagonally, when they are not really. Also it was thought that widescreen would drive laptop and pc sales because people would want to watch movies (that aren't even released in widescreen 16:9 format) on them. err no thanks!
Apple kinda got something right when they released the ipad with 4:3. they realised its a far better format than widescreen for a tablet, like it is for any display.
I'd much rather have the choice of bigger 16:10 or 4:3 panels and pay for the privilege , but alas they don't make them now.
Widescreen is ace if your dealing with documents, or two apps, as you can have them both on display for working with, if your screen is big enough!
As for websites, it depends how they are set up by the owner of the website or the software they are using to provide the site.
