"slick tyres"

As a few might have noticed, last night Gareth tried some Schumacher slick tyres (Rascal 1/10th buggy, part number U6720) and while they didn't give the grip of a new mini pin they were actually very good (less than a second per lap slower than my car)

As a club we are thinking of bringing it in as a control tyre, (along with Broxtowe who are also thinking about it)

The benefits are that they will last for ages and they wont wear the carpet out.

The only possible downside is that they need additive, but that is readily available and lasts ages too.

Can you all put your thoughts down on here, both for and against and we will look at the outcome and decide in a few weeks.

Obviously if we do bring them in as a control tyre we wont turn people away if they don't have them that week, and we could think about having a small stock of them trackside for people to buy.

They did look good last night and I am thinking of giving them a try but its finding somewhere that stocks them.

Hope people do give them ago because the carpet is getting a lot of ware on it now :(

getting them wont be a problem, PBM will stock them and I'm sure the club could purchase some from Andy like we do with the mini pins.

I've bought a pair. Looking forward to trying them out next week. Anything that lasts longer than minipins is good in my book. I have noticed the carpet fluffing up more and more each week.

What about the slicks that rich ran? They didnt look to have as much grip (maybe they didnt have additive on) but they did look like a lot of fun.

They are made slicks and we use them as a control tire here in Sweden. They need running in and addative isn't a must (but is recommended) and warm track/hall makes a difference.

I have posted a few pairs to the UK EU and the US

Panther also has a good clay tire that lasts quite a while as well.

Yeah we had a car with a set of those on.....our place is very cold over winter, not sure we'd have enough grip.

I would be interesting in them but I would like to use my stock of yellow mini pins up first, also u want to see how they perform in winter when it really cold there no point running a controlled tyre if they don't perform in all conditions as we are supposed to be racing not drifting as for Broxtowe there hall is relatively warm in the winter so they may not have the problem with a controlled tyre not working in the cold weather but I certainly would not dismiss the idea but the tm2 was made to run on high grip surfaces even though they can be run in lower grip conditions with a ball diff but maybe there should be a little testing before the club commites to running a controlled tyre on a permanent basis

looked up the tyres and they are listed in the 1/10 on road tyre section.

Next minute i can see tyre warmers turning up on pit tables lol.

Also what will the 4wd cars use as i can only see rear wheel tyres ??

I personal think if racers want to use these then thats there personal choice but to make it a control tyre for club i think is a bit restrictive.

It might even put people of dropping by if they know they need to get special tyres to run at mansfield.

The slicks I used are the ones that onekiwi has put the picture of on here. mine came from Sweden, maybe not so much additive on the front next time but that was there full race run and the car is set up to run on staggers and mini pins, as for 4 wheel drive you can get front versions of the schmacher tyres as well. I personally think anything that lasts longer than pins has got too be a good step forward. No tyre warmers though lol

Any chance of putting your set up on so we can dial the car into the tyres?

i think if i had time to make more changes to the car it would of been alot faster. a must with these tyres is additive i personally cant see them working without it on so make sure if you get them get additive.
as for a control tyre at mansfield well it depends on you, i can always put a class on for them anyway
i dont know how long mini pins are lasting with other people but i can get about 12 runs competitively out of a set then i just lose to much traction.
so i will see how these fair, i am running at broxtowe saturday and mansfield sunday so i should have a good idea after that. but tbh i cant see me buying new tyres every 2 meetings for much longer anyway.
as john said above we will try to keep a stock of these tyres if they become popular.
also to clear up the question about what fronts are being used on 4wd with this rear tyre at broxtowe it is the high profile cut stagger.

i ran them at broxtowe tonight and my times were pretty much the same as on mini pins tbh i had alittle bit to much rear grip. andy ran them on a run and he agrees you cant tell any real difference between pins and the slicks.so they are looking good for a control tyre for broxtowe.

also a big bonus is the tyre still looks like new after 5 runs

I don't think we even need to go to a control tyre, it seems quite obvious they are the way to go for many reasons, and most drivers will just use them anyway. No one can moan then can they? :thumbsup:

just read this thread and thought i'd post, iv'e recently started racing at rvrccc indoor on carpet and a lot of the guys there run foam tyres (with addative) on their 2wd and 4wd buggys, apparantly they are getting about a year from a set, i'm sure if you ask in the ribble valley section some one would be able to give you their thoughts/opinion on them.. hope this helps.. mark.

Possibly a silly question, but can't you create your own slicks from worn tyres?

Last winter we ran GT14 RTR cars in Grantham, on carpet indoors. I ran one set of scale treaded tyres that came with the car , they were almost bald towards the end of the season but it was hard to detect any lack of grip as they've worn out.

If you've got an old set of mini pins/ spikes, mount them in a drill and sand them to slicks...worth a go at recycling?

well i did say i wanted to see them tested first but i never thought it would happen this quickly but the results seem to be very possitive and i am prepared to give a least a set a try and if i think that they are ok and the ware rate is much better then it would be daft not to switch really as any saving on tyres which is what we tend to spend most of our money
on every 2-3 weeks or so has to be a good thing

Ive now got venoms and i will try them back to back with my slicks, the slicks work once they are warm, venoms seem too work straight away:thumbsup: i also tried my mini pins sunday and they are still the quickest tyre at mansfield but not by a lot, so i can see it will end up being a personal preference?
