Admin - if this is the wrong place please move it. Thanks.
The list of ‘approved’ speed controllers (speedos) that run with no electronic timing has been used by the 12th and TC Sections since the 2011/12 season. This list, compiled by the BRCA 12th Section in conjunction with ROAR, has worked well and provided a selection of speed controllers that are all running with the same definition of ‘zero timing’.
When the BRCA 12th Section issued its list, speedos that were released prior to the rule for ‘zero timing’, with no programs for altering the electronic timing and no blinking LED, were included. Drivers with these speedos could keep using them and not have to go to the expense of upgrading. This arrangement also worked well.
12th are the only Section to run a list of speedos with an approved ‘zero timing’ mode. Our list is produced in conjunction with ROAR and is not issued by the Electric Board. Some other Sections have adopted our list and used it to good effect in their National meetings.
As we have come to understand how to check speed controllers we have discovered that some of the older speedos without programmable timing do not comply with the current rules for ‘zero timing’. We did not test these speedos at the time we added them to the list in 2011 as our information was that they all had zero timing, and no programs to allow timing boost or turbo to be added.
In effect, there are some of these speedos that have some electronic timing built in, and some where changes to the circuit boards can allow timing programs to be run. In both cases they do not have the ‘blinking LED’ to show that the speedo is in the approved ‘zero timing’ mode that has been checked by BRCA or ROAR before being added to our list.
With effect from 31 December 2013, all speedos without a blinking LED will be removed from our list and will not be eligible for use at BRCA LMP12 (12th) and GT12 National. The 10th Electric (TC) Section will announce their decision on allowable speedos before next season.
After that date, all competitors who are not sure if their non-blinking speedo falls outside the Rules will no longer have to worry about whether their speedo has timing built in or not.
We realise that this will mean some additional expense for some drivers. However, we hope that by giving a bit of notice of our intentions, every driver who wishes to compete at the BRCA 12th Section Nationals can make arrangements to obtain a speedo that is shown on the list. A new list isposted on the BRCA website here (http://www.brca.org/index.php?q=sections/subsections/pages/homologation-electrical-equipment/592) (scroll to the bottom of the page to find the list/s) so everyone can see whether or not their speedo will need changing to allow them to compete at 12th Nationals (12th and GT12) from 1 January 2014 onwards.
