View Full Version : Clubman thoughts...

Hi chaps,

Let me preface this by saying that none of this is a moan, complaint, b*tch or anything of the sort.

I think that we can all agree that the Clubman has evolved to be a no slower than any other class. I know that all along people have had different ideas of what Clubman means and what the restrictions should be. Largely, I dislike the idea of restrictions and I prefer to operate in a manner where gentlemen behave like gentlemen and we all act accordingly without strict written rules to spoil the fun.

The idea that everyone needs to run a silvercan, or similarly slow motor, is something that should be ignored. The problem is that we are running very different cars, the tourers cannot keep up with the F1s if they run the same motor. I think we should all agree on that. This is where being a gentleman becomes important, we should agree that none of us will run a motor that produces uncontrollable power, some of us are running cars that have been out of production for a while or that are limited edition. Driving round the track with poor control because you are a beginner is acceptable, but doing the same because you have actively chosen to have a car with too much power is uncouth! The actions of a savage individual and as such it should be frowned upon.

To summarize, in my view Clubman is about a number of different things to different people: out of the ordinary cars, fun racing, scale Tamiya bodies, etc… But I propose that we all agree that the main thing Clubman stands for is gentlemanly behaviour and driving standards. A class where you can race your pride and joy knowing that everyone on track is doing their absolute best to drive in a controlled fashion... If someone isn't driving to that standard I simply propose we have a chat with them.

Your thoughts and ideas are welcome.

Yeah, I agree that uncontrollable power should be reserved for defined competitive classes and competitive chassis .... it wouldnt bother me either way if the clubman was resticted to silver cans. Just to touch apon the F1's my 6 wheeler has a Tamiya ESC and a Torque tuned with standard gearing and is plenty fast enough, however the standard gearing of the F104 does make them a fast class ... the BRCA for the class is 21.5 brushless which is what my pro has in it ...

I am only going to run the Tyrell now with the brushed set up in the clubman but am looking to have some fun with my TT01 with 27T brushed and the FF03 with 13T brushless to bring it back inline with what other are running, for me thats where the fun is ...

Nice Mustang shell! 65 or 66? Got a pic of the grill? :)

As for the motor restriction I'd be against a restriction as long as we have mixed cars on the field, maybe something like silvercans for F1s and any sealed can for tourers to keep speeds close. Ideally though, no restriction for me, just people being sensible :)

The f1's are good to watch but are quicker in their std race trim.
The clubman class is aimed at mild motored cars, for newbies and the experienced driver.
I would like to keep the rules simple and down to the drivers of the class.

I think the problem comes from difference in corner speed and driver skill,
Look at the GT12 all running the same motor battery and blinky, but its the most door banger class we have,

I think like Dave says its up to the drivers to make the class work

Chris56

Tamiya tourers have a limit as to what motor they can run anyway due to their construction. Id rather see this class governed by common sense rather than rules/regulations, ie if your car is not "moderately paced" then it either doesn't run or needs detuning in some way. On the straight line speed front, my ff01 has a 13t brushless (£50 combo) and is as quick as a silver can F1 in a straight line.

But I propose that we all agree that the main thing Clubman stands for is gentlemanly behaviour and driving standards.

So how about points for "Overtaking etiquette", for example allowing sufficient space between you and the slower driver, or "Planning ahead" by leaving a nice 2-second gap to the car in front? Penalties for tailgating and cutting up other drivers? Maybe you could race in pairs with one walking ahead of the car holding a red flag, and book in with gentlemanly names like "Sir Power" and "Baron Petch the 3rd"?

Only problem is that if Clubman is about good driving standards then half of you lot should be barred! Especially Chris "The Petch" Petch.... :woot:

Seriously, the Bandit is half dismantled! (reused servo, hexes and some rod ends!) Will try to get it together! Take your FF01 in case I can't though...

PS: On second thought, I am not sure that firstly I want to soil the vintage Tamiya class with merely an old Traxxas, secondly... If the weighty (As dave put it, more lead than a fishing tackle shop) Traxxas were to hit a Tamiya... DISASTER! No more Tamiya.

I don't exactly have a "collection", just 2 TL01s, one which is my son's, has huge scaler tyres and a Land Rover body and is currently a pile of parts... also an 80 turn motor!

I guess it s not really about restrictions but the want of the drivers in the class to have it all on an even keel ... at the end of the day I wouldnt want to win because I have a faster car ... its a hallow victory

Scott.

cunawarit
08-11-2013, 01:46 PM
It is difficult to have it all at an even keel when the cars are so different. Maybe there's a price to pay for having everyone run whatever vintage car they please.

The F1s are as quick as the 13.5T TCs round the track. They are as quick because they get through the infield faster, not because they accelerate as hard or get to similar top speeds as the super powerful TCs. If we want an even field it would mean either slowing down the F1s, or speeding up the tourers to be as quick as 13.5T TCs.

Which then begs the obvious question, why not run the TC clubmans as 13.5T TCs if they are basically the same.

Secondly, is it fair to slow down the F1s when they really aren't all that fast down the straights? You could ban foams, which would slow things down. But the F1s look like lightweight twitchy things, I'm not sure they would be much fun on rubber tyres. I guess you guys who drive F1s can answer that :)

Lastly, I don't think it is good to equalize the overall lap times by making some cars way quicker down the straight than others. I'm no expert but I think that's probably conducive to high speed accidents which is ultimately what breaks cars.

A long post to basically say that I'm all for trying to make things as equal as possible whilst always keeping in mind that some differences between different classes are not easy to overcome... And perhaps cannot be overcome without doing something that actually spoils the fun.

The Doctor
08-11-2013, 02:39 PM
Isn't Clubman about just running what you have without getting it smashed to bits? I like the fact I can just bring along the F1 / Group C / Blitzer Beetle and run them as they are. If we start having rules for motor types etc it will defeat the object in my view. It's great to have an "open" class aswell for new starters to join.

When I was a kid, my all-time Tamiya off-road desire was the Monster Beetle, which I've now had and sold. The Boomerang was a close 2nd, but not had one of those yet.

I'm glad that you mentioned the word open, which means a Mini can run with an F1, faster cars and more experienced drivers should bare this in mind if they choose to run in this class - it was shame to hear cussing during a clubman class last night due to the slower minis, we get frustrated I get that...

If you have a faster car wait for the best time and over take nicely ( which was the case most of the time) minis are good in the infield and after all it is a race ... Where appropriate the slower cars should yield on the fast straights and sweeping fast corners, but to expect them to just move over is not in the spirit of things and cussing wont help ...

That a side wicked time last night.

I saw it differently, the newbee's Mini was much better driven this time. He's learning at an accelerated pace! It is always difficult overtaking a newbee safely hence the occasional "MINI!". As for the other Minis no issue, specially your Mini, it was setting the track on fire!

Awesome racing!!! Enjoyed having two cars and drivers lapping pretty much at my same speed :) Thanks for the close racing Chris and Scott! And Chris if we agreed to race one another for the last three laps we could get one more lap in ;) As soon as we start pushing each other we start crashing.

And I agree nobody should expect a car that's ahead to move over... If they are a lap behind though, that's a different matter. And my own frustration stemmed from my mistaken belief that I could overtake the slower of the Minis at full speed, this cracked my shell, sent my electronics flying and cause an ESC wire to break and my car to lose power intermittently... :-/ No excuses, I'm still new at this myself and not I know to slow down, get safely beside the newer drivers before fully committing to get past them. My own mistake.

WOW! That looks fancy compared to what I am using. Plain box and all it says is "ESC Made in China"

Yet, until last night anyway, it was handling your 15t no probs.

Agree with your comments about slower newbies - wasn't part of the reason for setting up this class to encourage new members? As Scott said, he is coming on leaps and bounds and we need to encourage him.
I will own up to making contact when impatiently overtaking at speed, but stopped crashing into him when I started being patient. Just get behind/alongside, match your pace to his, then hammer the throttle when safe to do so.

Loved the close racing last night between Gui's tourer, Scott's mini and the Shamcar - lets have more of it:thumbsup:

If the gearbox can't take it, don't use it.:lol:

As proven last night, the gearbox will take a 13t, its the idiod building it thats the problem:lol:

I reckon you should only be allowed to run these.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/370510068134?hlpht=true&ops=true&viphx=1&lpid=95&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=95

That will limit what motors you can use :)

not a bad idea.

Sham Car shells rock! I have transplanted the Aodi to the TT01

The TT01 was better behaved than the TA03F ... (benched to the back of the workshop!)

Cut the TT01 arms and put some 2mm threaded in between the two halves so I have slight toe in ...

Raped the Helicopter for an S3050 digi for the steering and put softer springs on the back (thanks for the advice there Guy)

And the cussing did not originate from you lot ...

so ..... after my past few weeks racing buggys being somewhat disasterous i have decided to try to inject some fun into my friday nights and as from next friday i shall be racing my TL01 in the clubman class. i will be using a 17t brushed motor but geared right down with a 19t pinion so as not to gain any advantage on the streight. im looking forward to participating in some gentelmanly racing without getting my my knickers in a twist like i did this week :( sorry chaps the red mist seemed to be with me all night

Chris56
16-11-2013, 10:51 AM
Nice one mate! Gui is running his TL01 with a 15t so I would just run the same gearing as him.

I think I might race my TA02 - whilst the Shamta Ray did provide some entertainment for people, it was a little lonely at the back:(

Should be running 13t brushless with 20t pinion so hoping for some good wheel-wheel racing between the 3 of us

cunawarit
17-11-2013, 09:39 AM
FWIW I am not sure that I will keep on running the TL01 with the 15T. Might go back to the Ansmann motor.

The 15T has caused a number of overheating speedo issues that have me worried for the long term health of the speedo... :( If I run the car slowly for too long it shuts itself down.

PS: If I can figure out how to mount a fan in there somewhere (the electronics are all packed inside the chassis) I may go that route.

PPS: FWIW I am running standard gears (no speed kit) and a 21T pinion with the HPI motor. With the 21T I did run speed tuned gears.

hmm it was less of a problem when I ditched the SCT whells in favour of some ballistic greens. The car does have a lack of droop but I can't give it any more without using softer springs, which I don't want to do because the back end is quite grippy.

I have already pre-booked but under my real name. If I can't get the car to work this week then I have to become "Captain Chaos". Here is an image of said guy - he does look a bit like Dave though:

Im slowly building a collection - TA01, FF01, soon to restore a Manta Ray. Quite tempted with a TB02 next

Not tempted to go modern? TB04 or TT02?

Chris56
28-11-2013, 01:20 PM
Sort of tempted but I want to keep my costs down. From what I've read though the TB03 is meant to handle like a dream.

Apparently so does the TT02: http://www.thercracer.com/2013/06/tt02-initial-race-report.html

Anybody want a Pulse 2.4 ghz RX for £10? Bought new, never run but cracked the case due to wicked strength tape so could not return it.

Can bring tomorrow ...

Chris, sorted out My Thundershot (body strip and repaint and electrics) .... when will yours be sorted?

Found the original Body for my FF03, cleaned up nice - may run it this week :-)

It certainly will - can't decide on Hornet or Manta Ray. Out of interest, how did you strip the body? I would like to repaint the Hornet before I sell it

siddus74
10-12-2013, 09:38 AM
Sell the Hornet? Haven't you just got it? The only reason it was easy to strip is due the previous painter having used the incorrect paint and it had already started to flake.

I may bring the Thundershot down this Friday for a run .... it has a brushed system installed with mid range gearing and a 19t Double ... gives it real zip but not massive top end ...

What are you guys planning to run this week?

Scott

cunawarit
10-12-2013, 09:49 AM
He's doing it as a side business, a way of testing out a whole bunch of old RC cars without forking out a whole lot of money. :) I like the idea.

BTW, feeling the itch to try off-road again...

siddus74
10-12-2013, 11:05 AM
Are you guys bailing on the clubman for a while then?

Scott.

Chris56
10-12-2013, 11:19 AM
Haha, not really a business but I am buying/selling old Tamiya's at the moment and would like to give each one at least one run. Problem is I risk getting too attached - already decided to keep the F1 I've just bought!

Definately sticking with clubman and im not going to jump sides, but I want to try running Hornet/Manta Ray in 2wd guise to see if they are suitable for stock buggy.

If I do run the stock buggy class it will be alongside clubman

Bailing is the wrong word, I may try the occasional off road race but Clubman will be my main class for the foreseeable future.

siddus74
10-12-2013, 11:30 AM
Chris, good to hear ... let me know when your F1 is sorted... I've fitted the new front bumper for the 6 wheelers and taped the body :(

Silver with Tamiya esc of course.

Scott.

Chris56
10-12-2013, 11:53 AM
Silver can already installed, just need some foams - I've seen some Zen ones on Ebay for £12/£14 inc wheels. Soft front, super soft rears. Shell is nasty so will either strip and repaint or get the Alfa Brabham shell.

How well do rubber tyres work by the way?

siddus74
10-12-2013, 12:20 PM
They don't ....

Chris56
10-12-2013, 12:59 PM
Foams it is then!

cunawarit
10-12-2013, 01:12 PM
Cheater ;)

On a similar note I was amazed how grip the wet tyres give! Made my car a little twitchy but that's the way of the future for Clubman tourers. With the right setup the lil TL01 would be way quicker.

siddus74
10-12-2013, 02:05 PM
I've done a little research and found out what compound the wets are .. I have some slicks of the same compound to try on the FF03 this week ...

Scott.

Chris56
10-12-2013, 08:59 PM
Just to confirm, I will race 2 cars this friday, both in clubman: TA02 and Manta Ray

The reasons for which only I know and nobody else will understand!

siddus74
10-12-2013, 09:16 PM
FF03 and Thundershot for me then Chris ... lets have some pictures ... be good to race the Thundershot against the Manta Ray

You got kit tyres on yours and what motor you hot installed?

Scott.

Chris56
10-12-2013, 10:53 PM
I've only got 1 pair of kit tyres and they don't have enough tread. I will therefore be using Venoms front & rear. Haven't decided on motor but probably a 27T brushed.

Here are some photos - note the aluminium front shock tower:

looking good .. venoms front and rear! Ill be on the back foot with the Tamiya rubber I have installed but it will be fun anyway :D

Scott.

Chris56
11-12-2013, 10:03 AM
I don't know about being on the back foot - Venoms are pants without additive, which I won't be running. I could always install my F1 rubber tyres

When are you going to get the Mardave sorted? I may put the original mardave motor in it and run a 4cell Nim in mine ...

11-12-2013, 12:41 PM
What power setup are you considering?

cunawarit
11-12-2013, 01:01 PM
1S + the stock G2 motor and my usual cheap no name ESCs. Got a new fast servo for it too, was concerned that a slow servo + 1S would be way too lethargic.

PS: I've come up with a paintjob plan... I don't know if I'll pull it off. If it looks like cack well, I'll just pretend that I meant it to look like total cack as part of a Team Shambles thingy.

Chris, the co-ordination of your carpet and curtains (I think they're curtains..?) is almost as good as your bodyshell and wing!

I chuffin hate those curtains! They actually go quite well with the primrose coloured alls, and the walls go well with the pub carpet, but carpet and curtains:rolleyes:

When we re-decorated, we had a big dilema as we wanted to lighten up the hall way, but couldn't quite stretch to a new carpet and the pub carpet is in too mint condition to get rid of (Dave will vouch for me - he's walked down it!!!). Still it gives the house character - as to I

Good laugh this week lads ... good to be with the Tamiya touring boys

Its 'me' for the foreseeable future I think. Also, good to stretch the legs on the Thundershot and iron out all the gremlins (binding steering servo for one and leaky rear shock - all sorted now)

TT02 being built as we speak  as well ... Porsche RSR

... Laugh or what, I changed a steering servo out in my FF03 in a rush last night because it felt like it wasn't centring only to get home and realise the foam wheel had moved off the actual steering wheel hub and was binding up against the transmitter case, the centring spring was just not powerful enough against the friction of the foam to centre it the last 5-10 percent

Moved back and super glued now thank you very much ...

Other tip Scott: remove the foam and superglue your fingers to the wheel:thumbsup:

I used(my daughters)hair spray to keep my wheel in place,
Also make sure the screw in the center hasn't gone tight, this happend to mine and thought it was the spring,I backed the screw off a the smallest amount and bingo, god as new :(
