View Full Version : Build thread: FF01 meets Manta Ray

I recently purchased a cheap Manta Ray in bits off flebay. My aim in doing this is to convert my trust FF01 into a TA02. A few people have asked me to do a build thread on this forum so they can see how it goes, and to see how many fingers I lose in the process.

My first bit of advice for anybody think of doing this is:

DONT DO IT!!!!!!

The amount you have to spend on extra bits, you might as well just buy a TA02 (£30-£40 inc body + p&p)

As well as a Manta Ray donor car, i've also needed the following:
Front and rear wishbones
Rear driveshafts
Shorter prop shaft
Front camber links (will make my own so they are adjustable)
Front and rear shock towers

I've also forked out on a set of ballraces, a new front idler gear (missing) and a front gearbox case (stripped screw).

I will upload some photos shortly.

Given that this car is now arriving in bits throughout the course of this week, the Shamcar will be named "Shergar".

More to follow, now off to pour myself a Brandy:D

Why do you think I didn't jump at your suggestion of turning the Bandit into a Rustler. All in it works out to more than a Team-C buggy. Mind you, most things in life cost more than a Team-C buggy :bored:

Anyway, looking forward to the pics, is the Manta Ray in good nick?

Should be interesting - I've had several DF-01 chassis'd cars and never thought to deviate this much from type ;)

Now you have an FF01 and DF01 anyway, why don't you build this?

A FWD Buggy made from a FF01 with DF01 suspension! It's a total blast to drive, and all you might need apart from the parts you have are M3 threads for upper links (which can be long M3 screws with the heads cut off).

Chris56

That looks so cool - plus I have all of the parts!

Just need some Manta Ray driveshafts (none came with it) and some smaller shocks and it's game on!

Does this leave you without a Clubman spec TC for now?

Hopefully not - everything I need to get both cars finished is now ordered - so running a 4wd TC and a fwd buggy, both silver can this friday.

It will be shambolic to the max, but am hoping to enjoy myself:lol:

Cool! :D I'm curious what you think of the handling :) When I tried the car like this the rear end was relatively loose off-power - softer tires (more suitable to the surface I was driving on) and the long DF01 tub helped stability a lot I recall.

Also, a thing to note on the FF01 is that in the manual you're instructed to put the rear hubs on to end up with toe-out. It's completely undrivable like that, so I would highly recommend to use toe-in.

Thanks for the advice.

I have used the longer Manta Ray chassis, wishbones and front hubs, but FF01 gearboxe, shock towers, and rear hubs.

I learned to use rear toe in on the ff01 at a very early stage so have no intentions to run toe out!

LOL! Oh Tamiya... Seems like these older tourers were designed to be as twitchy as possible :D

The TL01 came with negative caster, I always wondered why on earth it was so incredibly nervous... They did eventually notice though, the TL01LA fixed the issue.

Chris56

Every Tamiya i've own has always been tail happy. With FF Manta Ray I will probably still use the rear wing. I've got a good selection of buggy tyres and, given that the Manta Ray has rear wheels on the front also, I have several combinations to experiment with.

cunawarit
12-11-2013, 10:06 AM
The TL01 is planted with the TG10 caster blocks :) Mind you, I also do have that massive HPI wing, plenty of expo, way stiff springs up front as well as substantially more dampening. I would not say it was ever tail happy, the front was just hyperactive!

You will be running rear tyres up front and fronts at the back with the FWD buggy, right?

We'll see! whatever works I think - I have a feeling balistic green rear might work ok on the back as there is little weight there. Maybe Schumacher silver venoms up front.

Clubman or off road for the FWD buggy? Might be fun to see it beat a few RWD buggies :D

Origineelreclamebord
12-11-2013, 04:54 PM
I'm not sure the gearbox can stand many impacts - either crashes or the impacts on the gears from landings etc... I'd love to be proven wrong though! :p That aside, I bet it could do pretty well against the RWDs!

Tire-wise, I'd start with rear tires up front and 4WD fronts at the rear using the same tread and compound - That's what usually works best on my DEX210 FWD Buggy anyway :) I have been looking at running staggers on the rear, but with that the car lost all stability into corners, so I went back to MiniSpikes front and rear. It could be the tread, it could also be that the lower profile tire resulted in a lack of rear droop after I adjusted the ride height.

Clearly I have gone entirely mad and forgotten what the word "beautiful" means.

cunawarit
14-11-2013, 02:04 PM
Think beautiful in a VW Beetle kind of way as opposed to the outstanding beauty of an Auburn 851 Speedster.

Quirky and different can be attractive qualities in a car. Don't you belong to the C4 PICASSO owner's group? You should know a little about enjoying a car that's let's say... not exactly conventionally beautiful.

Dave, the second generation Multipla might be less "ugly", but also way more boring. I have no issues with the Multipla, if you are going to do quirky it might as well be "HOLLY F**INK SHIT! WTF IS THAT!?!?!?!" quirky.

Chris56
15-11-2013, 11:47 AM
The thing about the Chuckle Bus Dave is that its so ugly its cool. The new Multiplas are just like any other MPV.

cunawarit
15-11-2013, 11:52 AM
That can be true :) I can think of many cars that are so butt ugly that they move into cool territory.

Then again, others are just butt ugly... It is a blurry line.

IMHO the FWD buggy is ugly in a good way.

Chris56

Well it ran (into the back of Charlie's FF01) but definately needs tweaking. Tried various tyre combinations and seems to work best with Schumacher Venoms up front and Ballistic greens on rear. Main problem is a complete lack of low-speed steering. Have moved the front shocks right in on the bottom but the limited steering lock seems to be causing it.

I'm interested :) softest compound! Might get the 22 out a few times this winter :D

Dave Dodd

Mansfield mcc have used the venom tires for months but they do use additive for the first 2 rounds any more and they suffer grip roll. Obviously this is only available to use on club nights, I did find they tires got better round by round not using additive.

..Was just kidding, I don't give up so easily!! ;)
I will try again, maybe I will ask for few drops additive to some onroad pal..

BTW to come back to topic, Chris next time you could use crawler tires.. After having tried off-road indoors, truck tires, foams.. And all mixed configurations in between!! :D:D

The Doctor

Gui, if you want my silvers (softest) or whites, just let me know & you can have them. I'm not racing this week but I'll bring them to the club if you like.

Cool, I do. I'll take the Losi to give it a test too. It was under-steering like hell last time I tested it, but I'll leave it like that. The tyres may balance it out :)

Chris56

All the remaining bits have arrived so have now finished both cars.

The wishbones turned out to be from a TA01 so had to use the longer chassis on the tourer.

This did mean using the shorter chassis on the Shamta Ray, reducing the wheelbase by about 2.5 cm. That, coupled with the steering revisions should make it quite nimble on friday (he says expecting a barage of abuse from Paul!!). I have also fitted a wing to it.

Pictures (apologies about the pub carpet on the landing - its an antique!):

TA01 yes! Proper vintage that is.

Seems a shame to soil it with a Shamtastic shell ;)

PS: That TA01 looks very shiny and well built... So unlike you ;)

Chris56
20-11-2013, 06:04 PM
Oi - for once I've built a car with OCD tendancies, Paul would be proud of me!!

I would like a vintage Tamiya shell but too many $. It is a shambolic shell but at least its shiny!

Just need my new brushed esc to arrive and its game on for both cars.

The Doctor
20-11-2013, 07:38 PM
Wow that carpet is truly magical. :wub

Yes, I must admit that the TA01 looks like a good effort from the pictures, but I'll need to reserve judgement until it's completed 3 rounds and a final without the gearbox being stripped and re-glued back together or random wheels departing from the rest of the car during a race. I'm sure you'll understand why I say this...

As for the Shamta Ray, I love the way you freely reduce the wheelbase by "about 2.5cm" (I am wondering what that was measured with, maybe a piece of string of unknown proportions) and can't wait to see the "steering revisions". Have you actually enabled the front wheels to turn now then Chris? :p

Oh, and you can't use the initials "OCD" in a sentence with a spelling mistake. That just doesn't work for me.

Sorry, still not allowed OCD membership for now.

Was worth a try!

I arrived at a figure of "about 2.5cm" based on how far I had to move the body mount:D

Front wheels definitely steer now and i've even tightened up all 4 wheelnuts.

As for the gearbox, all screws have been tightened to a "reasonable" amount of torque and i've even (you'll love this one) ran it for a "few" mins with the wheels off the ground to ensure the new bearings are bedded in;)

Shouldn't be too hard to increase the wheelbase, although i'm interested to see if running a swb will help the steering woes.

To be fair to Chris, have you seen the slop in the average 10 year old plastic Tamiya? Chris could have said "anywhere between 2 and 3 cm" and still be right.
