hi everyone i used to race back in the late 80's started with a grasshopper 2 for anyone out there that can remember them!! and moved up to the shumcers xls and pro before i left the sport. i now want to get my 9 year old lad into the sport i so enjoyed and get back in to it myself. but its been so long i do not know what cars are being raced now days, so what i would like some advice on is the best car/brand to start my lad into the sport to get him started and build up his race/driving ablity, i would really apprciate any info on how the sport has changed, batterys, motors, etc. and the best way and cars/radio gear to get back into it or introduce my lad to it, we have been to a few clubs but things have changed so much from when i used to race and i can not tell what brand a lot of the cars are,!!!! thank you in advance for all your help and info.

Go and speak to the people at the clubs there are often deals to be had on good used equipment.
I went and watched at a few clubs until I decided on road was for me. From watching I picked up that most were using Tamiya and Schumacher chassis and that they all ran 13.5t motors with the exception of a few silvercans.
Technology has progressed quite a bit since you last raced
Radio's generally are 2.4ghz frequency and do not require crystals or get interference
Batteries are generally 2cell Lipo, better power to weight
Motors are generally brushless, maintenance free

I was in exactly the same position a couple of months ago I use to race Pro Cats / Boss Cats in the early 90’s then stopped. I tried to get my son involved but have ended up just me having a race night and he is not so bothered now which to be honest is great! Schumacher still make great cars and im currently racing a Cougar KF, Speed Passion ESC, 7.5turn motor, LIPO Batteries and a Core RC 2.4 transmitter. The best advise as every body here will tell you is see what people at your local club use as you will be asking questions and its great when others have been through the same thing.
