Newbie to 4wd electric (need help)

I like the old Kyosho ZX-5 style, but only available as RTR in the States... New to 4wd electric*
Can you help me decide if I should get the kit as zx-5 SP or get the RTR and modify as needed.
All the local guys love the SP model...
Also, what size brushless system would be best for offroad racing?

if you intend to race then definitely get the SP kit. you could always get the original ZX5 shell and fit it if you prefer the look of that shell, although it is very tight to fit electrics under, the new shape is a little more roomy.

The SP is also far more competitive for racing than the RTR, unless you spend a fair bit upgrading the RTR which will make it more expensive than the SP anyway.

In terms of motor. This depends on your track and driving ability. If it a reasonably large track and you are a competent club racer (from a different class) then either a 5.5 or 6.5 should be ok.

If you are a complete novice then maybe something like a 10.5 to begin which you can later upgrade if the speedo will take a lower wind motor.

If you are serious about getting into racing and have the budget - go for an SP (or even wait a little longer just in case an FS kit comes out).

Unfortunately Kyosho have once again fallen into their usual trap of releasing a variety of update parts without releasing boxed kits with the same parts in them too (for example, a normal Lazer updated with the SP package is NOT the same as a boxed Lazer SP, and there is still no official confirmation of a boxed FS kit).

The Lazer Readyset is a very good deal and great for the total beginner and bashers however all the suspension and a lot of other little parts are different on the SP, to upgrade to SP spec is uneconomical.

Since you are already intending to get a brushless system, the standard ESC and motor in the Readyset is instantly wasted. With Brushless power you may find that a few parts on the Readyset will wear out quickly, I believe the driveshafts in particular are a lower grade. You could end up wasting the Readyset cash almost as soon as you spend it (although it will give you a handful of spares to use on an SP)

Popular brushless winds here in the UK for 4wd is a 5.5 or perhaps a little milder. Racers use sensored systems almost without exception as they don't cog and have better feel at low speeds. I don't think the US is much different in terms of motor choice.

I have heard through the grape vine that the FS is defo coming and it will be around December time. But then again I might be dreaming.:thumbsup:

Well, I have since taken a look at the Kyosho Japan website and YES, an FS Kit is due for release there in December.

Also, a new Readyset with Orion LiPo and Brushless power. Pics are small so I can't tell whether this budget ESC is sensored or sensorless.

Just a few little things like shock bodies and springs, I don't know the full list off the top of my head, but it makes a difference.
