Anyone had any experience with the BMW 535D, i am told this is "the" diesel engine to have but i would prefer an owners opinion rather than a magazines test.

I need a bigger car, the A3 is awesome but the boot can be a tad small for going racing, i quite like the idea of the 5 series touring

I used to work for BMW, so know a little about these.

From what I can remember this is the 3.0L twin turbo diesel and is an absolute work of art. Without a doubt the best diesel engine on the market today in a superb car.

However, buy one of these at your peril...you'll struggle to get rid of it later for anywhere near what it's worth.

Best value BMW today is the 320D touring sport

Hi Lee

you mean the biturbo 6-in-line 535D?
It goes like a rocket, until 120 km/h you are not really slower than a M5 V10
You have to be carefull with the Turbochargers, cause they sometimes have a problem with "switch"-system between the little and the big charger...blocated.
suspension is all Aluminium, so it wears out a little faster, specialy on front.

Greetings from switzerland

Col, Maurice,

Yes thats the one, i have been told its a bit of a rocketship, 0-60 in 6.5 isn't bad for a big car, and 35mpg ~

It wont be for a few months yet but i dont fancy a range rover and i quite like the look of the M sport models :)

Plus i have put 20k on the audi since june so i need to move that on before the miles effect its value

i'm tempted for a diesel estate car as although it has a MASSIVE boot the S8 isn't as versatile as an estate for racing etc
personally i think the later shaped Audi A6 Avants are stunning looking cars for estates, prob even better looking than the saloon equivalents :wub
i know the BMW engine is regarded as very good but the Audi 3.0Tdi seems to have plenty of grunt plus if you add in the quattro 4wd you're never getting stuck in a muddy field after a wet meeting again

go on you know you want to ;)

Why? Whats your reason?

When ever you see a review of the Audi compared to the Equivelant Merc / BMW it always seems to fall just short. I have no fear it will be an excellent carbut for some reason i like the look of the BMW M more :)

MattADH

Why not an A4 diesel? The boot is pretty big and there are loads of options on engine and performance. Economy is very good (better than the BMW I am led to believe).

I have a 140BHP 2.0 Audi A4 saloon and the wife a 120D 1-series BMW and although the 1-series has 20+ BHP, the Audi's 2.0 engine in my opionion is better than the BMW...

That said, the 535 is a proper piece of kit as I found out when we went to Holland for a race.

Lee

Cheers Matt, i have liked the 5 series for a while but i have never felt "old" enough to get one but with the sports pack on it looks pretty smart, all reviews say they would rather have the 535D than the M5 :o

I love estates, Tourings and Advants or what ever else they are called. I have test driven a A6 3.0Tdi Advant and a 330D Touring. I love them think that cars look better in the bigger version of a Estate. I know that Audi were doing a deal with the Le Mans A6 for about 400 a month all in. Have you also consider a Alfa 159 awesome car also very nice too drive and a great car for cruising, you get alot of looks.

Have you thought about the 530i? 0-60 6.5s, 35 mpg, not quite so much early torque as the diesel, but plenty for day to day driving and an awsome top end if you're caning it. They sound ace and probably quite a bit cheaper than the 535d too, worth a drive.

go for a 535d - you won't be disappointed! I moved from a subaru sti with 300bhp+ and the BMW is virtually as fast, auto lovely, really luxurious but fast, realistically wont do much above 30mpg unless you drive lots on the motorway but an awesome car!

Lee, there are a lot of family hatch's/saloons around for bargain prices at the moment - you've picked a good time to look for one, although I bet you've lost a wack on the Audi if you PX it?

Ive just PX'd the Focus, for a Mondeo Titanium X 2.2Tdci. Low mileage, 3 year old, over £22k new, and bought it for 1/3rd of the price. Its also going to save me a fortune over the Focus!!!!

Yep, 18-20k seems about the going rate for a 3year old 535D with less than 40k miles. But you know me, id then aim to pay 16k.

James Pritchards mum had one, I remember when James borrowed it for the Tiverton national and when he gave it some welly, the world slowed down a little bit and it now gets dark a lot sooner.

Audi A6 2.0SE Avant, 1995M, 196k miles, burns no oil, alloys, faux Recaro's, leccy roof, leccy windows, false floor for hiding stuff in, best car I've ever had. Zero depreciation too. You can have it for £500 delivered to the next Worksop meet :D.

Hey Ian, who is Nick?
Anyway, it was from the Car people in Wakefield, its 55reg in Silver with 38k miles for £8500 - so not what id expect to be the cheapest around, but even so it was certainly reasonable and (now I have got rid I can say) the Focus had faults I couldn;t diagnose and I was sick of it, couldn't really sell it privately if I want to sleep at night, just had to cut my losses. I managed to get £350 discounted by bartering too.

It did 55mpg on the M62 coming home from Wakefield to Bury (50 mile), would have been more like 60mpg if wasn't constantly changing speeds for lorries and would let cruise control take me home uninterupted at 75mph.

The average dropped to 48mpg sitting on drive with engine running while setting up the voice controls, bluetooth, phonebook etc.

I have done a few miles of A roadness, probably about 50, and the average dropped to 46mpg.

Tonight I have been round at Claires and so done some more motorway miles and average is back to 48mpg

The tank was not far from empty and it took £57 to fill, the range is going to be over 600 miles according to the computer. Whereas in my Focus it cost me £50-ish to fill and it would do 300 miles on average, 350 if on a long motorway journey (i.e.Belgium) per tank. Its also cheaper to Tax, and to insure.

Its freekin quick, its 155bhp and 360nm of torque. Compared to the ST170 which was 172bhp and 196nm of torque. The Mondeo on paper does slower 0-60, but in reality, the in-gear speeds are far far far quicker as all the power is just at driving RPM and not at redline - although somehow it doesn't beg to be thrashed, so my license will be clean again soon.

I can't fault it on anything, it handles great, its comfy (and a lot more luxurious with so many gizmos), easier to park (as i can see the bonnet now!) and it has a tighter steering lock than the Focus. I wish id chosen it to begin with!!!!!

The Mondeo ST Tdci is same power, but has less toys and same suspension, but seems to be a little more expensive for equivalent Titanium X. So by choosing the Tit X I got more for less.

I was originally looking for a Fiesta Zetec S Tdci til I stumbled accross a Mondeo Titanium X at Availablecar.com in Nottingham. The Fiesta's just aren;t depreciating so wasn;t finding any bargains, the same money for the Mondeo is far more justifiable.

Nick is me stealing Lee's thread, i thought that when i re-read it but couldn't think of the write word

Cheers for that Chris, it sounds really good, especially the engine. Mines almost 5 years old now so the diesel engine is fairly weak, loud and uneconomical, being the older style engine, but it has served me well. I hate my mrs' Focus so if she doesn't mind a bigger car we could just go for a newer Mondeo, although i wont hold my breathe :woot:
I have looked at the Fiestas too and they are very expensive compared to what you can get in the larger family style cars, which kinda puts me off buying a small cars with the way things are.

Anyway that gives me food for thought, cheers.

bizarley I can fit a large weekly shop in the back of my s2000.

it also takes all my rc gear apart from my old style pit table although if I got one of those sectional camping tables it would fit.

then I do have my works transit connect with free private miles to lug stuff about in or the wenches mk1 focus to tow my track bike and take the olds out in.

I may concider a new mondeo to replace the focus when it finaly has to go in about 4 yrs time its the wenches car though so it 'll be up to her.

If anybody wants uncomfortable, I have some Corbeau Forzasport 2000 seats in a box at home somewhere. They were hardly used, and were a tad uncomfortable in a Mini with full race suspension..... but it was so uncomfortable it was ace!!!

Yeh with the Mondeo, it makes no fuss about it so its easy to let the MPH climb. Although im getting into the habit of setting cruise at something sensible, warm my bum, and just glance at the road every few minutes incase it needs pointing in another direction.

Im wondering about Bluefin for it, up the BHP by 30 and the NM by about 50, and it'll be even more economical!

Cheers Chris,
When i saw the P1 i knew i had to get it, so made a quick decision to sell the clio.
The Clio was awesome to though, it handled just like a go cart

Thats some impulse buy!! :woot: My impulse buys usually consist of a Kit kat or redbull, never both.

Well.....impulse as far as, i was looking for one for a while, but struggled to find one i would buy!

Although i did impulse buy a Eunos Roadster to drive around Europe for 3 weeks in, a few years ago.........actually i got Nicky to pay, but i think she may have forgotten

There's nothing like planning to drive over the Stelvio Pass, then 2 weeks before you go, decide to buy a second hand japanese import, with no history, to get there in :o It did have a roll cage though

You had to get rid of the clio because you kept getting beaten off the lights by a bog standard diesel focus estate :woot: and leaving half of your tyres behind:p:p:p
