motor connector plugs

I'm thinking of using some 3mm gold connectors on my motor wires so I can easily swap motors mid meeting. Is there any reason not to with the modern brushless setups? I know that direct soldered is best but it can't make that much of a difference can it?

Speed passion are all plug in connectors and i have never had an issue with them.

I did it for a while, while i was (fairly) regularly changing motors.
Meant i didn't have to muck around soldering at the club.

Now i'm better (relatively) at soldering, and pretty much decided on what motors to use, i've gone to direct wired. Only time i'll need to solder is if i pop a motor.

BTW, plugs can be knocked loose if they aren't pretty tight. Like my Speed Passion V3 connectors, they used to pop out pretty regularly. 5 seconds with a pair of pliers fixed that.

Also, if you have inline connectors, remember to heatshrink them so they don't short out on other stuff in the car, or each other.

Its just something else that can fail or break. I have DNF'd when a crash popped a connector off. Not much effort to solder so go direct.

Depending on the connector you use, there are ways to stop them coming apart.

If you use single 'bullet' style connectors (Corally 4mm or 3.5mm) then put some fuel tubing over the joint - that will hold it all together almost whatever the punishment you mete out to them.

If you use plugs, then a small tie wrap across the plug will do the same job, or even tying them together with strong thread or fishing line!

The plugs can be made reliable with a bit of ingenuity whilst retaining their convenience while you sort out a motor that suits you. HTH :)
