Someone said there was a 'trick' to getting a higher quality video, anyone remember what it was?

The trick is to click on "watch in high quality" just below any video that is available in high quality, e.g. this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atmaXuVN9QA

you will see a difference in audio and video.

&fmt=18

put that on the end of the video url :)

if you stick that code on the end of every normal video it gives you a better quality regardless of whether it says hq or not.

I believe they re-encode all videos to higher quality, (MP4) and have a standard one (FLV ?) may take a few days for the high res to appear.

you can use something like http://keepvid.com/ to download and pick the better quality.

(but google are still fiddling with the settings and keep adjusting)

yep

the normal ones are flv,the hq are mp4 i think.

look at this video, its normal quality, theres no hi quality button to press, yet add &fmt=18 to the end of the url and voila..you get the hq video and a button to let you go back to normal quality

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=hdJN0ss7jA0&feature=related

and with the code on the end

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=hdJN0ss7jA0&feature=related&fmt=18

Well I managed to download the std quality video, in FLV format.

I stuck the trick on the end and downloaded it again and it was the same size and still an FLV

Make a bookmark on your toolbar and put the text below in it

javascript:if%20(document.getElementById('download-youtube-video')==null%20&&%20!!(document.location.href.match(/http:\/\/[a-zA-Z\.]*youtube\.com\/watch/)))%20{var%20yt_mp4_path='http://www.youtube.com/get_video?fmt=18&video_id='+swfArgs['video_id']+'&t='+swfArgs['t'];%20var%20div_embed=document.getElementById('watch-embed-div');div_embed.innerHTML=div_embed.innerHTML+'<br%20/>%20<span%20id=\'download-youtube-video\'><a%20href=\''+yt_mp4_path+'\'>Download%20as%20MP4</a>%20(right-click%20and%20select%20<i>Save%20'+%20(navigator.appName=='Microsoft%20Inter net%20Explorer'?'target':'link')%20+'%20as</i>)</span>';}void(0);

a magical button will appear below the info panel at the top right, click that to download the high quality version of the vid ! This is a sneaky trick that lets you access the version of the video in high quality that is for Apple tv users.

No problem. It was a bit brief.

I just checked and it works just as well with a ordinary bookmark so you can do it this way....

Go to the you tube video you want to download in high quality. Bookmark the page. Go to the bookmark and edit what it points to, so instead of 'www.youtube..etc..' put in that long piece of text from my other post.

When you are on any youtube video and you select that bookmark, instead of going somewhere it will just make a little button appear at the top right, click on it and it will download a HQ version in MP4 format.

Hope thats clearer (but it may not be !) Any more q's, just ask.

i cant get yours to work jonathan.. :(

what you can do G is:

find the video in HQ you need and copy the link but it must have the &fmt=18 on the end
use this link http://keepvid.com/
paste the link it into the download part and it saves the video for you in HQ format mp4

Keepvid gives me the option of save as standard, or save in high MP4

Downloading this, http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=XbVtbc_XzrI&fmt=18

gives a 11k file as opposed to 7k in standard, its higher res........and better

Have a look round on http://www.vimeo.com/ for much better quality,
try http://www.vimeo.com/752979 or
http://www.vimeo.com/1090182
