View Full Version : Wanted - Kyosho W0105-2: Rear gear box

Does anyone happen to have a spare W0105-2 rear gearbox anywhere? I am restoring an optima (as you will have probably seen on my other posts) and in the absence of a belt conversion kit, I have been advised what each of the individual parts are. I have tracked all down, except the rear gear box so am hoping someone out there in Oople land can help :-)

It is pretty rare. I was looking to convert my Optima to belt, but the gearbox was nowhere to be found. A fellow Optima owner told me he succesfully converted to belt drive without the special gear box. The tension on the belt is mostly on the bottom half, the upper half tends to be more loose, so it may not rub against something even without the special pulley, which was the main reason the special gear box was invented.

So with the right diffs should I be able to fit the belt without changing the rear gearbox?

I pulled this out of my personal stash to show you how crudely done they were. You could easily modify a stock pair and make them look a lot better in the process

I would sell these but they would be pricey after shipping and all, I'd recommend modifying your own. You are the only one that would know

My Optima runner has been converted to belt drive by just replacing the belt and diff cases with Mid parts. Works fine and reliability hasn't suffered because the idler gear isn't in there.

If you want to do a proper full conversion there's absolutely no need to search out what is just the standard gearbox that someone at Kyosho cut a section away then drilled two holes. If you've got the lexan cover you even have a cutting and drilling guide, or just copy the photo above

Thanks. I have stripped the base car down over the weekend and cleaned everything and have taken the advice from this thread to try fitting the belt just with the normal gearboxes.
I've fitted the 2 ball diffs and used an OT89 belt. Re-assembled the gearboxes and fitted to the chassis rails to get some idea of tension and it seems great. Presumably the option gearbox I was after simply allows the fitting of the pulley wheels to maintain tension in the belt? I have studied the image posted by gomachv, but am not even certain at this stage whether it needs it as it seems great already? Obviously the proof will be in the pudding when I reconstruct everything and see if it works.
Gomachv - have I interpreted this right - is the cut out section to allow for the pulley wheels? I can't find any decent resolution photos of an original W0105-2 gearbox to see what the difference is

Yes, from what I can see that's all the cutout does. It looks like it possibly raises the belt just slightly, however that's the "loose" side of the belt so it may help keep it from rubbing when it goes slack. I doubt it is needed but Kyosho felt it was- maybe there is a reason?
