Is there a front bumper "issue"

Bent

it's a problem for sure. sticking out when there is some suspension compression. it gets in the way and can stop you dead on some tracks. I was always running mine without the plastic piece, which usually resulted in a bent FF hanger, despite not actually hitting anything other than bottoming out.
Depends on the track i guess, but it was always a problem. I ran a T bone bumper for a while, which really helped, despite looking crap and its lowered ground clearance, until it broke.
Moving to the yokomo was such a pleasure to not be bottoming out and hitting the front of the car on the track, or gouging out a channel on jump faces.

Front bumper issue?? I've run these since they came out and never EVER had a front bumper issue. Weird.

Anyway, a new 4wd is nice but not really necessary.

What do we want?

2WD 2WD 2WD 2WD 2WD 2WD 2WD2WD 2WD 2WD 2WD 2WD 2WD 2WD

When do we want it?

NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And, can we have an update to the current XB4 2wd with a proper 2wd front end please? This would make the Xray 10th offroad range complete and AWESOME!

Aaahhh…..the "my landings are crap" issue……yep I've heard of that "issue" :p

The XB4 is one of the most balanced cars to jump and this shouldn't be an issue at all if you have the right jumping technique and setup.

Never been an issue for the close to 2 years running them.

Did replace 1 FF hanger the first month of Malin running hers though after hitting a steel fence at the local indoor track :)

But if you keep digging into jump faces you are either running it way too low or way too soft.

And if you land with your tires stopped or on your nose it could very well dig in for sure……but you want to give it a bit of throttle just before landing to take advantage of the forward momentum as you land and then instantly get on the throttle (or brake if there's a turn) ;)

But yes it does stick out a tiny bit further than a couple of the other 4WD's out there.

Bent

? I never thought the landing were crap? are they? it was ok jumping yes. I ran mine for a year. I put up with the bumper digging in, but it certainly highlighted the car wasn't tested on certain types of tracks in it initial development (bumpy and low traction).

Now I notice other people still running the xray having issues with the bumper digging in, most recently at RHR. Their setup, not mine

We are expecting our XB4 2015 Spec kits to arrive on the 19th, currently we haven't been given a price, so i've guessed at £349.99 any kits Pre-Ordered will be supplied at this price or less should it be cheaper than we are expecting!

sime46
23-11-2014, 08:16 AM
It's on a lovely xray radio tray and the layout is like in the manual matey. I can only assume this layout gives a better weight distribution. I think the trick here is to start out as the manual suggests and then tune from there as required. I trust Mr Hudy to do his sums correctly. Also, it would be a squeeze behind the motor, at least it would with my Orion set up.

Not according to Tessman or Lowe (if you look at their layouts) :p

Also you get less cooling air to the speedo sat behind the motor...

Guys, what spares are worth getting for an XB4 ?
I guess a few have ran the car for a while and know what can break. Ive looked for the obvious things like hubs and wishbones but cant find any specific to the 2015 car so i guess the ones from the original car will be the same.

Can't see you needing many spares with a 2015 spec, maybe a front bulkhead which is different to a 2014, the arms are the same between 14 & 15, the usual shock shafts, spur gear.

Run Xray for 3 years now and the only thing I have ever broke has been front bulkheads and crown / pinion gears which will be good now with the metal gears.

I have run an XB4 for 2 years now and gone through the following

2 x Front bulkheads
1 x Spur Gear
1 x Internal gears for diff
1 x Rear Hub

Also worth getting some of the pins that you use when building the CVD's

Never seen anyone with a bumper issue on my local track and have been running the original XB4 up until this week... Yes I swapped for the NEW XB4! Although it looks similar there are many very clever developments, it has gone to the next level again so smooth to drive and carries so much corner speed than the previous version

But bumper issues not heard of them, if your compressing the suspension that much then you probably need to run stiffer

Just to see if anybody has had issues with steering twitch. I've noticed that the 2014 was spaced out behind the servo horn by 4mm I tried it and it smoothed out the steering ko servo but a friend has a savox 1251 and has had no problems.

Well, after some back to back ish testing I'm back onto shorty setup. I've changed quite a bit of my setup and went to Bury Metro yesterday. The car went brilliant on the 50/50 carpet shiny floor combo. I feel like I've really made progress with the car now. Previously I'd not felt entirely comfortable in higher speed turns but the changes seem to have it hooked up beautifully. The car was balanced and settled all day on both the high grip carpet and the slippy wood floor. Some slight tweaks here and there will have it planted from track to track now I reckon. Ill get a setup sheet together if anyone wants it over the next few days.

Got my shell and the car performed very well on its first outing.

Also does anybody know where or when the centre diff will be released along with the servo mounting set.

I'd like to know too

I don't think the 2015 car has different wheels to the '14 car, but the front wheels did change between the '13 & '14 cars, the off set is 1mm wider.

Another question, would it be possible to covert the 2013 car to 2015 specs?

wes

Technically yes but as you need all of the middle of the car it would work out cheaper to sell your existing one and buy a 15.

In principle yes but it'll probably be cheaper to buy a new kit and sell your old car.

The new 3mm alu. chassis and 2mm top deck that we have been using for some time on medium to high grip surfaces have now been released by Xray:

Have to say i am a little frustrated with Xray that all these changes are being released after the 2015 spec has been released. If i make all the recommend changes to car for astro, it will owe me well over £500! Why were they not included in the Kit? The good thing about the original car was it had everything you needed out of the box. Never thought a cheaper option would be to buy the ZX6!

Options are exactly that.
Most average standard drivers won't notice the difference that most options will provide so you don't have to get them.

Even if you did sped 500 quid, ud save more than that in not repairing it. I had a zx6 for 2 months and did about 70 quid on arms alone. The thing is made is biscuits

Another thing to keep in mind is not getting caught up in the thought you need everything you see the Pro's running. If you are crashing every other lap, your issue is not the difference in running an optional 3mm chassis, you need to work on running cleaner laps. I include myself in this group, I don't race much during the winter and read everything and get all wound up about the latest and greatest new stuff. I'm still waiting to see if this new chassis replaces the stock chassis for running on clay, maybe I'll get it, I dunno yet, but at a club level, will it be the difference in me making the A Main if I keep crashing or run old tires? Nah. The 2016 might come standard with this chassis!

s22jgs
15-03-2015, 09:47 PM
The 3mm chassis is predominantly for carpet (high grip) as far as I know so not for clay

I'd like to see some new set ups for outdoors on clay or hard packed to see how these are being used vs. the traditional top deck set ups. I'm not running the rear top deck, so to use these lower decks, I'd only run the front one? I might get them for carpet...but I have the top decks for that already...dang!

I'm thinking about getting the xb4 '15. Is there a 2016 version coming out? I'm currently an b44 driver and looking to upgrade, what are these like on astro?

Great on astro, get or make a bulkhead brace and the metal crown gear and pinion.

I'm sure there is a 16 coming but with which new bits as standard I'm not sure.
3mm chassis is good, but I'll be testing the standard chassis with CF stiffeners.

Xray, why do you release 12mm wheels when all your cars are 14mm......?

This is due to the move to standardize the wheels for off road to make it possible for pre-mounts at large events (similar to the way it's done in TC I believe).

I think its a rule that has been proposed to come into action for the Worlds in 2017.

Although it might be a little bit messy to start with, in the long run it will be better for everyone I think.

There is always a 2016, 20[insert year here] coming out, Xray is a business and they need to release new cars often. But to answer, I cannot recommend the XB4 highly enough. I love it, it is made for astro, grip roll does not exist with this car. I have the '15 model and run shorty lipo's and they fit my DB2 so I am a happy camper.

Good news they will support 12mm hexes, other than Durango I did not think anyone else supports 14mm hexes.

Just built my 2015 - few things I noticed.

The metal ball stud things that go into the shock bottoms - all 4 supplied were the same - so they were too big to fit into the front shocks - had to cut the 'collar' off 2 so they fit!

Rear shocks - no matter what I try the springs catch the shock bodies when on the car and the suspension is moved - not ideal - no idea how to resolve this as the springs are simply not wide enough to clear the shock body properly.

Apart from that - very solid indeed - as you'd expect.

Built as shorty.

Any tips for when building a kit.

I have to say it's a great kit, very easy to put together - the best kit I have ever built. The instructions are especially very good, nice great detail. And congrats on your purchase, I love this car, grip roll does not exist with this car - at least I haven't seen it yet!

One thing I would do if I knew beforehand before building the car, is throw the stock turnbuckles and ball cups away and buy better ones. I have just replaced mine with Kyosho turnbuckles and Kyosho ball cups because I have never had any problems with them.

The stock XB4 ball cups pop off very easily. The stock ones seem to pop off randomly even in cases when you don't crash or land badly.

Another thing, although I haven't yet had problems with mine. You might want to replace or at least buy a spare of metal satellite gears for the differentials. A few folks I know has had problems with diffs burning up on the stock plastic (composite) satellite gears. I still run the plastic ones without issue but I don't drive overly aggressively.

Never had one pop off on the 2015, but have when trying to adjust them. They seem a bit tighter on the turnbuckle thread than my 2013. If I built again I would put a bit of oil on the threads. Replacing them is not required though, and never bent or snapped a turnbuckle in 3 years!

I don't think so. Strange how I am seeing this. Are you running the alloy bell crank John? I am on my car and this could be placing more stress on the ball cups.

Yes mate, mine is fully Exotek'd up on the steering front, alloy bellcranks & alloy Ackerman link, had an alloy servo arm as well so there isn't any give in my steering.

I'm installing the #361168 Graphite Chassis Brace Upper Deck - Short Pack in my '15 and was wondering why doesn't the kit come with the 361172? The small spacer for the center spur. One 361172 spacer comes in the original kit. But I need a second for the front bulkhead. Or should I reinstall the front upper deck? Or cut and make my own spacer?

thanks

Hi Guys

Reading through this thread I noticed that the ball cups are mentioned, had a number of XB4 's from 13 to 15;s and always had issues with the turnbuckles and cups popping off. Tried replacing the cups but they still pop off in a crash (I know I shouldn't crash as much !!), so been looking at the kyosho rb6 ball cups, will these fit straight on to the xray turnbuckles ???

I have tried the greasing of the threads when screwing the ball cups on and working them so they are not as tight, but it is ruining race days with them keep popping off. Any other brands that people have used or recommend ?

Cheers

Hi Steve

I mentioned the ball cups popping off. It's strange, because I found when I first got my '15 I had several occasions when they popped off - never seen this in other kits. But since the first few times racing the buggy I no longer see this problem. Maybe I am a better driver now - XRay kits do make you a better driver because they are so awesome to drive

I did purchase Kyosho ball cups along with turnbuckles but never fitted them. You need the Kyosho turn buckles too as they are a lot thicker than the XRay ones. You also need the studs, the neck is longer or shorter - can't remember which on the Kyosho.

The '16 car has the same turnbuckles and cups.

Cheers
Simon

What is a good setting for the servo saver? My kit instructions says 2mm. I had mine set at 2.2mm. Most of the pro setups just state "tight" It did not feel like it was set too tight. but in 8 months or racing I've gone through 3 composite servo horns. then switched to aluminium and now my 2nd set of gears in my servo. The 16' version kit setup states 3-4mm initial preload and I've compared all the part numbers and every part is the same as my15'. There is no way to get mine to 3mm, it coil binds at 2.5mm.
The car is amazing otherwise. Running indoors on carpet, wood boards for track barriers. I'm easily 1st/2nd place driver at our local club track(when I dont break) barely crash, just bumping the barriers at the most.I've come 2nd place twice with completely stripped gears(the car is a handful to drive lol) Savox sc1257TG servo. which I've used in all my cars without servo savers with no problems at all. I'm going to switch to a heavier servo and maybe set my saver to 1.9mm? Anyone else have any issues? ideas?
thanks Bob

I would defo say get a tougher servo, at least 12kg

Most I think are running the saver tight eg. as hard as possible with a tough full size servo.

We have found that the plastic will catch after a hard landing if it was a stock setting causing the servo saver not to centre properly.

The Alu saver from tresery did help out.
