Hi All,
This topic may have already been covered but is there a way to use an old ESC with Lipo batteries? I have an old Mtroniks SM800HF Pro Esc which was a good bit of kit in its day and intend to use this in the Cougar 2000 with a brushed motor. Is it just a case of installing a Lipo cut off switch or is there more too it?
Also can anyone recommend a suitable cutoff switch?

Most can handle 6 to 7 cell NiMh, which coming of the charger can be well above the voltage of a fully charged 2S LiPo anyway. The current peak will be higher, as the LiPo has much less sagging compared to NiMh for instance. So the ESC may run a little hotter, as well as the motor. But the ESC doesn't care what battery chemistry is hooked up to it. As long as you make sure there is some low voltage detection, simple way is to use a monitor that signals with leds and sound when voltage gets low. These can be plugged on the balance connector, or wired directly to the ESC to battery wire-connector, whatever you prefer.

drop a tooth or two on the pinion to what you would be using with nimh, as said before there is no voltage sag which gives you higher overall revs compared to nimh. dropping a tooth or two on the pinion will help keep the temperatures down and you wont lose anything noticeable on the perfomance side of things. i use a little device to sound an alarm if the voltage drops too low in the cells, mine is homemade and very simple, you wouldnt hear it too far away on the track though

Thank you or the reply's, I think I will be using a lipo (shorty) in the car and was thinking I could hook up one of these from Model sports to the ESC?

If your only doing two five minute races on one pack you don't really need lvc as the battery's will never get that low.
