View Full Version : Modern vs old brushless ESC
I've got one of these LRP Sphere Competition ESC sitting on the side not been used for about 7 years, how does it compare to modern ESC's? Much difference? Would it be ok in 2WD with modern 13.5-8.5 motors?

I should think so. If in doubt, ask yourself the following: Am I fighting for a national championship? Am I sponsored? Am I practicing every or every other day down the track?
If the answers are predominantly "no", then you sir are a club guy and it won't matter a sausage because it's for fun.
Plus, it's free, as you've already bought it. So no expense.

I also have an lrp sphere which I use as a spare ESC and is currently in my "indoor" car. I can tell no difference between it and my other modern ESC, however, I find it harder to programme as the flashing lights don't seem to relate to what the instructions say they should, however this is a set up issue, not a usability issue.

I agree.....the Sphere is a good solid esc...quite smooth and reliable... I have one in my B4.1 and it seems very little different to the Flow works team in my B5m... You've got it so use it..!:)
Yes I'm just a standard club driver and don't need top performance, just wondered if modern lipo's and motors were still ok with it, looks like answer is yes so that's great.

Absolutely, I'm told it is fine down to a 5.5 turn
Only thing I was never sure of was whether it had a lipo cut off - I have had mixed responses to the question, but probably better to not run til flat just in case
The sphere TC is/was awesome. I'd still be using mine if it worked...
Some other ESC's of the day... couldn't pay me to put one near a buggy.
