Durango Dex410 V4 gearing

I have a question about the dex410 v4 gearing. There is a few of us running this car with a speed passion pro 1.1 and 6.5t motor on a 87 spur and 20t pinion. The problem we are all having is the esc is thermaling in under 5 minutes can anyone suggest what gearing I should be using?

The tracks range from small indoor carpet tracks to outdoor astro tracks like Kidderminster and Telford.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Gear down the pinion a bit or make some vent holes in the body.

Does the esc actually gets hot?
Sp thermal protection is notoriously hit and miss and most on a 4wd end up disabling it.
Check your temps at the end of a run with a temp gun, and you'll probably find they aren't as hit as the esc thinks. If so switch tp off. That's what I ended up doing with every sp esc on a 4wd.
Offcourse additional cooling will help but it will also bring dirt/water in the car...
On the v4 20t on a 6.5t the pinion isn't big, I think I was @ 22t outdoors.

yes the esc is around 55 > 60c I have spoken to some who as said to put holes in the shell to allow more airflow in the car which makes sense. Have you upgraded the standard fan ?

55c isn't hot. The temp protection is supposed to kick in above 95c
I never had to upgrade the stock fan. Tbh I have moved on from SP now but never had any issues.
The main issue with temp control in the 410 is lack of space, the v4 is a bit better with its shell and drivetrain but everything is still tight.
Airflow will help a bit and no harm in trying it, but suspect it won't do enough...

i would guess 22 or 23 would be about right for an outdoor track with that motor. geared too low and it can get hot...

I usually run 21t pinion with a 6.5 with zero issues and the motor and esc never get too hot, depends how aggressive you are too!

23t pinion with that motor on most tracks.

i was running the same, 23/87 6.5. Same esc.

Thermal protection is a joke. So was lvc. So I switched then off and used a timer.

TP used to cut in at ~60, lvc at 3,9-4.

Never missed them. Never over heated (hit about 75-80 after running for 10 minutes, motor was the same temp, give or take) batteries came off with about 3,8 left on them.

I run 23t pin on stock spur with 6.5t. Cheapo hobbyking xcar esc. never had a problem with heat at all.

I've had chew with the bairns speed passion/s however. I wont run one myself. Seen loads of people at the club blow them up and have thermal cut outs.

They aren't actually that bad, once you work out their weaknesses.
I'd not use one in a basher, but in a controlled environment (racing) and the right set up. They are quite nice for the money.

I think you will find its the speed passion speedo that is causing the problem.
One of the other Team Durango team drivers was having the same issue and he replaced the speedo and all was well. I would maybe turn off the overheat pretection and try that first. I run 6.5t orion in my 410v4 on 22-23 pinion and its coming off with very low temps on both the motor and speedo.

I normally run a 21 or 22T on the 6.5t v3.0 motors indoors.

Turning the overheat protection is a must. If I leave the overheat protection on then the ESC will cut out. It seems very over-sensitve, but when I checked the ESC temps after a run with the program box all was still good.

Outdoors I've run upto a 23T pinion without any issue.

Make sure you are using the correct software and are not using the on-road 'Modify' software which has 'boost' on it. this is not really for off-road use.

For off road, you really need to be running 'Modify 0'.

Also check what timing board the motor has if its a v3.0, this will also make a lot of difference.

My settings are;

DDRS level: 3-5 (depends on track) normally I run 3.
Motor timing: Black board (middle on can)
ESC timing: 26.25 degrees
Overheat protection: Off
