Hi all

Thought I'd share my Iconic RC day with you

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i112/The-Lateshow/DSC_0235_zps51frapkg.jpg (http://s70.photobucket.com/user/The-Lateshow/media/DSC_0235_zps51frapkg.jpg.html)

I set off from my home in Havant, Hants, at 3:48, after having alarm wake me at 3am. My route is simple, but long, A3, M25, A1. I was on the M25 at half 4 and all was going to plan except the nagging signs that said "M25 closed, j19-21a". Maybe they've not switched them off yet or something, sure enough, as I reach j19, cones and flashing lights direct me off. A sign saying "all diverted traffic" with an arrow on provided me with hope...until after the 1st roundabout at which point they disappeared. I criss-crossed my way up the A41, M1, a town, a speed camera and another dual carraigeway until I found my way onto the A1.

I made the circuit by 7am. Sleepy heads were breaking cover as I pulled up and met up with Mr Iconic himself, John Weston, who pointed out I may be slightly mad at undertaking my journey. After booking in we had a round of practice and nowt broke. I was then presented with my very own event card with stickers in and my name printed on it, Yowzers.

During my settling in I had a wander around to see what was in store for the day.

Slimer would like this wagon:

Large rostrum

This chap was booked in to do a bit of aerial filming of the event. Professional in his approach to his work too.

Also quite clearly "one of us" too judging by his choice of car

A raffle/tombola going on

A shop, selling kits/tyres and odds and ends

A cheerfully cheesy chap in race control:

And er...........a bit of creativity

More on how I got on and some more pictures a bit later but before I go I'll leave you with this:

Is it me or does the bloke in the foreground on the left bear an uncanny resemblance to ex-Surrey & Hants gaffer Neil Dudman?

I don't think your crazy to make the journey I would have to if I didn't live on the other side of the world ..... Maybe next year if they release the dates early enough I might head over with the family for a "holiday" 😜

I found most people friendly, approachable and willing to chat about our shared hobby, it was only from the odd one or two that I felt like the music had stopped as I swung the saloon doors open. One fellow laughed when i told him I had built a Top Force on the cheap, until i told him how. I also found that the A1 club is bang next door to BSB star Chris "The Stalker" Walkers MX track, which was empty, no doubt because Chris was racing at Thruxton that weekend. Anyway, I digress.

Big line up of cars for a photoshoot followed. Then on with heats, 8 in all. My 1st rnd, shock tower breaks after 1/3 of a lap. The infamous Malc with the mouth, Malcolm Macdougal (spelling), had a spare Fibrelyte one I was able to borrow (but not buy) from him. he refused to sell it, saying it is a Fibrelyte version of an EVO part and cost £90 million, I personally think he was lying somewhere. Alas, ready for rnd 2.

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i112/The-Lateshow/DSC_0288_zpsiqgt8dla.jpg (http://s70.photobucket.com/user/The-Lateshow/media/DSC_0288_zpsiqgt8dla.jpg.html)

Which was better, 9 laps, a couple of falls and b/markers were the cause, but I finished, and so did the car. Lee Davies lent me a set of used yellows as my new greens were a bit much. Did a mod to rear gearbox, to stop idlers jumping. I cut a hyper 7 engine mount plate in half, and screwed the halves down with the single screw that is on the top casing between the idlers, I did notice the casing sitting a little flatter after this.

10 laps was the goal for rnd 3, and all was going well. I was 2nd on the grid, gave chase, Then back markers happened. Some don't seem to want you to pass without incident, may not entirely their fault though as they may still be learning, but I got took out which lost me about 12 seconds, then trying too hard after to make time up resulted in a grip role and that cost me the 10 lapper, oh well. All to play in last round. Rnd 4 went well, mostly, car fell over once, and I missed out on 10 laps by ONE & a HALF seconds. At this point Im 17th from 30 in my "class' so halfway down. B final then. 5th on the grid for the '89-'93 B final.

My Final started well, but an incident a lap or so in left in last place, so I tried to get a rhythm going and originally, starting in 5th, I thought maybe I could make up two places and get a rostrum position, it wasn't to be though, with the couple of set backs I had and people who were better than me on the day, I finished the Final in 4th, so I gained a place. With a vintage Tamiya car that cost around £100 to build, and no testing at all, I'm pleased it did as well as it did. So a good day was had. Shall I go next year? Now I know what to expect and I have a car.

Don't count me out.

Before I go, I'll leave you with some more pics:

That looks like a lot of fun!

Yes I have Top force EVO towers on file, I actually have one cut sitting here at the moment that doesn't have an owner.
