Tamiya Hotshot motor upgrade

Built a re-released one a short while back to rekindle the memories of when I raced the original way back now, great days!

This query though is what brushless combination best suits its limited gearing range, anyone have any experiences?

I have no Hotshot experience or knowledge, but would guess early design Tamiyas would not take kindly to 5.5 turns:lol:

So maybe go mild, like 10.5, and if need be, turn the wick down a bit. I'm sure someone more clued up will have better advice though.

I only suggested that as I run a Manta Ray, with a 6.5 in, but turned down to 65% or something.

My Optima Mid handles a 10.5 with no issues. I do remember putting modified motors in my Hornet for a giggle in the 80's but the gear box didn't last long.

Back in the day we used to do a small mod to the gearbox casing which allowed us to fit one or two extra shims and fit a smaller pinion, this allowed us to run the higher revving brushed motors to good effect and conserve the limited battery capacity we had then.

Nowadays the capacity limitation has gone but it is difficult to judge the equivalency between the brushed and brushless motors but I'm certain that a 5.5T would be well over the top, whereas a 10.5T perhaps is worth a try as I do use them in my 1/12 and a 13.5T in my GT12.

I'm running a modified spec 19x1 brushed motor from my old touring car in my super shot which did the revival endurance race...165 laps in 2hours of racing,it really flies!...and it's the equivalent to a 10.5 brushless so it should be easily capable of handling that..

Thanks Quincey, that confirms the thoughts so far and I had forgotten we did use 19T motors during that period too!
