Hello all - I am just starting up racing, and looking for a new motor/esc for my Dex210. I'll be racing outdoor astro, and as I am just starting out would ideally prefer one motor for the moment.

Can anyone recommend a decent all rounder? Really confused as to what I should be looking at now!

I am in the same position nick with the same problems. Did you manage to get any recommendations from anyone?

I am tempted to just try the SkyRc leopard 60a 10.5t off eBay as looks cracking value but unsure if I would be making a mistake.

Hi,

Depends on a number of things. Mostly budget!

Everybody will suggest different things as usual with these threads, but I can help with some general info.

For 2WD it is normally motors in the 7.5t to 10.5t range. An 8.5t would be a good place to start. Good, usable power, but reasonably easy to drive. Then you need a speedo to handle it. Plenty around. You can quite often get 'combo' deals with motor/esc packages.

This kind of thing: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SKYRC-Brushless-Motor-Cheetah-60A-ESC-Program-Card-for-1-10-Buggy-Combo-in-UK-/380698723438?var=&hash=item58a369846e:m:mJBkYxfGXFmb8DoadSssuSw

Not top notch kit, but decent.

If you're needing to stick to BRCA rules you may need to buy an ESC (No BRCA rules governing ESC's), but with a BRCA legal motor. Plenty around at reasonable prices...

Like this:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Skyrc-Ares-Pro-540-Size-8-5T-4100KV-1-10-Scale-Brushless-Motor-with-Dual-Sensor-/380904549401?hash=item58afae2c19:g:GFIAAOxywFhTcyo j

I could go on and on. There are secondhand options too which can be a good way of getting good kit at lower prices.

Ask away lads!

👍That's good advice, motor wise there's the speed passion v3 motors, they're light weight and don't get too hot, speedo wise the hobbywing v2.1 (same as the speedpassion gran tourismo) is still a good speedo, also cheap

That's great thanks. I was looking at the cheetah series also.

Think i might keep my eye out on the second hand market after Xmas for a speed passion v3 and a 120A ESC but if nothing turns up I may go for that cheetah and upgrade if needed at a later date.

Thanks guys. :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Just a note of caution, I bought 2 skyrc leopard combos (one with ribbed motor case) for in my children's cars. Both were un-sensored and both suffered with awful cogging, to the point where cars wouldn't pull away without a push.
Ended up putting motors and escs in bin.
I have since used speed passion or the hobbyking track star range and both ok, but obviously there are higher priced bits out there which I'm sure would be even better.
My speed passion reventon pro (2nd hand) has plenty of programme options and I use a 13.5t in my 2wd, with some boost for on straights and it is lovely to drive

I Agree with the Hobbywing v2.1/Speed Passion Gran Tourismo. That would certainly be my first choice of speed controllers in that range.

Sky rc Toro 120 is a very good esc, I just ordered the hobbyking version which should be the same.

The SKYRC Toro TS120 is a top notch piece of kit. I have three and they have all been fantastic.

The Trackstar GenII is, in theory, exactly the same, but I had one of them and it failed during calibration. Credit to HobbyKing, they refunded me for it OK.

Paired with the SkyRC Ares motors listed above gives you top quality, BRCA legal kit at reasonable prices.

The cheaper Sky stuff listed above IS sensored, so shouldn't suffer from the problems you described.

There's quite a few guys at my local club who've had those toro's fail. They seem to be either good ones are they pack up pretty quickly. The last one I saw let go caused a fire.

I'd be interested to know if Were they imports or from Schumacher

I thought there were some cheap imitation Sky RC speedos around? I'm also pretty sure that the Hobbyking Turnigy speedos are not Sky RC ones, they may look the same but insides are different. From what I've seen (not used them myself yet) the Sky RC speedos are good, when my Vipers pack up I suspect that this will be the way I will go.
For motors I use Thunder Power, cheaper than the big brands and plenty quick enough and seem to stay cool.

I used to use the same programming module for all my 1/8 and 1/10 sky rc and hobbyking esc.
Never had a problem myself apart from getting water in one and the cases on the 1/8 escs breaking.

 So...

TS120A ebay is £60 from someone unknown

TS120A from schumacher is £90.

Which one to buy...pay 50% more just in case the product fails???

Shame HK ones look a little cheap :woot:

Just bought the skyrc 120 but with the aluminium case http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Skyrc-Toro-TS120-Speed-Controller-for-1-10-Scale-Brushless-Sensored-ESC-/361034433506?nav=SEARCH

Seems a really good speedo so far!

ESC wise Hobbywing Xerun v2.1 120a. From a well known UK shop, just under £60 and still a great speedo. UK distributor backup too.
Motor nVision, currently at just under £45, excellent motors for the money.

2 of them were mine - a 120amp and a 160amp. Both were UK sourced and replaced by Schumacher under warranty.

My new 160amp (2 meetings old) started to reverse on Sunday, before the final and required turning off then back on again to clear the problem. My previous 160amp started doing that shortly before it went up in smoke.

The Trackstar GenII is, in theory, exactly the same, but I had one of them and it failed during calibration. Credit to HobbyKing, they refunded me for it OK.

Take a look at the Trackstar Gen1, I always used to use these and did reasonably well at club level winning a few finals against guys using branded equipment:

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idproduct=41121

In fact if you look on RCTech there's an entire thread on this ESC, a lot of guys in the states are raving about them saying on track they can't tell the difference between it and the branded equivalent.

I never tried the GenII in a buggy but I had a 1S Gen II in my GT12, it seemed to work well enough but was very difficult to solder up the power wires as the solder posts just unsoldered themselves from the PCB every time I tried to solder the wires to them. Eventually I just tossed the solder posts and soldered the wires directly to the PCB which didn't cause any issues. In comparison my Gen1s were always a breeze to install; I once replaced one trackside between heats using a borrowed soldering iron.

I must be honest, I did have one or two failures (I had Gen1s fitted in 3 different cars at one time) but no more than people using the more expensive stuff and HK always sorted it quickly.

The Trackstar motors are also very good but if you want a BRCA legal setup i've mated branded motors (Speed Passion etc.) with the Gen1 with no problems.

You've got my attention with the trackstar gear, what are the differences between the trackstar turbo and gen2?

HOTSHOT III

The GenII is more tunable, you can do more with the throttle and brake curves although TBH I never needed half the settings on my GT12, the Gen1 itself is very tunable and IMO has everything you need.

As discussed I personally found it very difficult to solder up the GenII power wires.

The Gen1 still has solder posts but despite my best efforts at ham-fisted soldering I never managed to remove any of them from the PCB so I think on the Gen1 the posts must be attached to the PCB using a solder with a higher melting point than the stuff available to the public.

This makes life a lot easier, like I say I once replaced one in about 20 mins between heats:thumbsup:

Did alot of reading yesterday,I believe the turbo (gen1) has had a firmware update making it the same as the gen 2 to tune.
I took a punt on the turbo after seeing a few people unhappy with the gen 2 for various reasons.

I haven't raced for a month or two so I must admit I didn't know that. Hope you have as good results with yours as I had with mine:)

Excellent vid, mine always came without instructions.

It is possible to get them from Hobbyking though, just view the ESC webpage from the HK international warehouse, scroll down to the bottom and click on "files" and the setup instructions are there.
