View Full Version : Shortening servo/ESC leads

Hi all

What's the general consensus here? I'm half decent at soldering.

1 Open ESC/servo and shorten/solder at board

2 Cut wires mid way/shorten/solder/heat-shrink

3 Cut connector off/shorten/crimp new connector on

If it's crimp new connector, any recommendations on a starter set for crimping with tool/connectors included? Loads on the 'bay but never sure on quality.

Any thoughts appreciated, thank you

Funnily enough, I did one earlier today. Option 1 for me - because I wanted to use black wires. I do also use option 3 if it already has black wires! I have crimp tool that I bought years ago from a shop that did a lot of flight stuff.

Option 1 for me, but I am an electronics engineer:)

I bought a proper crimping tool, watched a video which made it look easy.........not sworn so much for a long time! Getting the littler 'kers back into the plug was just ridiculous and then a wire pulled out..

Unless you have a lot of patience or a hatred of heatshrink, I would just shorten/solder/heatshrink your existing one

"Ben" is Ben Jemison team Schumacher driver and all round nice guy

just look in "community" section and send him a PM im sure s a member of York club he based up that way

I too have a crimping tool success and failure in equal measures at times

im not sure I can afford to keep buying plug/pin repair kits to practice on !!

I just tend to "loosely" coil excess wire and cable tie having 50 or so chariots to play with ,electrics do tend to get evicted and rehomed occasionally

These are good quality and all I use these days instead of soldering. It does take a little bit of practice but is simple once you get the hang of it.
