Time for a bit of a edit on my original post now that we actually have peeps with cars that want to race .... and still growing interest in the class !!!

So, some general guidelines for the class to get us up and running ... and this is only guidelines mind !!

We want to follow full sized Rallycross RX as close as much as possible as it really is a great class .. ie. big power, low grip, short multi surface tracks and lots of proper racing !!!

So the race format will be four qualifying rounds of 6 lap races, using the round by round system, with 3 rounds to count and 1 drop score. This will give points in each round that count towards the main finals.

All starts, will be mass starts, (yay old school !!) comprising 2 rows of 3 cars, and these will be switched each qualifier ...

Finals ... not worked that out yet but most likely a slightly longer race than qualifying, so maybe 8 laps .. and depends on the track ..

.. and we'll also have the "joker" lap ...

Car specs -

Shaft drive rallycross style buggies converted to run on mostly tarmac tracks .. no belt drives .. 4wd recommended !!

Cars must run rally or rallycross style bodies .. or generic types like the Hyper GT rally or Protoform rally bodies ..

Max 3 cell lipos ... there was some questions about whether we have to run hardcase lipos but the word from the BRCA is that soft case lipos are OK, we would recommend some extra layers of heatshrink on these for some extra protection ..

Motors - sensored or sensorless , max 2400kv .. these are bonkers fast so not sure why anyone would want anything faster !

Tyres - after some research, our ideal spec tyre, is the GRP Revo cut slick rally tyre in S4 compound. These look realistic and give good grip when they get up to temperature but are still slideable ... and are said to last a whole season !!!!!

If you only have kit tyres .. its not a problem .. run what you have for the time being ..
Hopefully our local model shop RC Octane will be able to stock tyres for us in the near future ..

Think that's it ... please post or message me if you need any info or have ideas ..

Below are the club race dates that we'll be running Rallycross on during the summer -

15th May

19th June

3rd July

17th July

21st August

4th September

Some of you might have seen me playing around with this on the onroad track over the last couple of months ...

and at the weekend of the 4wd regionals there was a LOT of interest in the car.... and several guys talking of buying cars and running some Rallycross RX style meetings using a shortened version of the the onroad track.

So I thought I'd share some links for cars, tyres motors etc .. and see if we can get this off the ground !!

Mine was a 1/8 buggy that was converted to run onroad, but there are a few rally style cars that come ready to run ..

Cars like this -

... and a few links to the gear that I've used .. you'll see how cheap it all is ...

and speed wise .. running at the weekend my car was only a little slower down the straight than a local National TC a finalist running a 4.5 motor on boost !!! and probably quicker out of the corners !!

This my motor - http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__32125__Turnigy_TrackStar_1_8th_Sensored_Brushles s_Motor_2400KV.html

Tyres area nice realistic GRP cut slick, I use the S4 compound, they grip pretty good but still allow a degree of drifting :)

They work out around £33 a set posted, and are said to last a whole season !!!

This looks great, have raced 1/10th off road and 1?8th nitro off road in the past but havent raced for a couple of years since I retrained as a train driver and moved house, but this would definitely convince me to start again.

mrspeedy
11-04-2016, 08:02 PM
There's a few of us have these now, so hopefully we'll soon have some organized racing with them !! :woot:

I really enjoy running my car around, only been on my own so far, well I've practiced with a few TC's but the 8th tends to scare them off the track !!!

Keep an eye on here or Mendip RC Raceway FB page for more updates ..

Maybe, would be great to run Schumacher tyres but It doesn't say if they're belted so I'm guessing NOT !! and considering the pretty high speeds I think a belted tyre is a must .. but try a set Jonathan let me know how they go ..

Excited for mine to arrive now! Full heat of 10 of us soon?!

Would it be worth us getting a list of names together with people who now have a car? Just so others can see the number of people that will look to be racing them?

Here's a link to a "speed calculator"

I've used this to work out overall top speed, and initial gearing for my cars setup, I aimed for around 45mph and this seems to be about right for rallycross on Mendip short track ..

mrspeedy

Our first round of Rallycross RX proved to be pretty popular straight off with 8 drivers turning out to run the 8th scale beasties !!!

The Hyper GT's looked good straight out of the box with most using the standard electrics listed above ...

The BSR's looked to run quite well and should go even better with a few tweeks .. some softer Hyper GT springs should work well as the std car is quite hard ...

Nearly everyone was running on the amazing GRP S4 compound cut slicks ... grip was great after a couple of laps on the tarmac .... but not quite so good on the grass

.. and here's a short vid of the days fun and frolics ... apologies for the dodgy editing !!!

We need to talk bodies seeing as there really seems to be a growing interest in this class.

Choice isn't great really, stock Hyper GT actually looks better painted up in some decent colours in the flesh ..

I think a few at Mendip have bought the BSR Basher. It's ready to run for £200, just need to get some batteries.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__64857__Basher_BSR_1_8_Scale_4WD_Rally_Car_Ready_ To_Run_EU_Warehouse_.html

Not sure how they compare to the Hobao. They usually re-brand an existing car, for instance my BSR 4WD is a Team C. I think the 1/8th maybe a Team C GT8LE according to below.

Theres a big thread here: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2397364

mrspeedy
08-06-2016, 03:47 PM
There's a few with the BSR at Mendip now, cars is solid as a rock, and is basically a road going Team C buggy so no problem with spares at all. Springs are a little on the hard side but Hobo springs are softer and fit ok ..

Most have gone for the Hyper GT .. which is a rolling chassis and needs electrics but they're cheap and the car is a good performer.

Best price is from John at RC Octane, Mendips local shop - http://rcoctane.co.uk/index.php?route=common/home

He doesn't have them listed on the website yet, but they're going for £175 as a roller .. give him a call !!!

Ace meeting with the rallycrossers yesterday

Also good to see so many new people with cars! The cars were really good in the rain, wasn't too hard to get them sideways :woot: For anyone that may be interested in running a car, I've seen some really cheap 8th electric buggies on ebay! All you would need is body mounts, a shell and a set of tyres and you'd be good to go.

For anyone running the BSR basher, I had mine going really well yesterday.

- Shocks - 50wt all round, kit Hobao GTB springs all round (part numbers H90077, H90078), shocks all led down on the towers
- Diff oil - Front 20,000, rear 10,000
- Bodyshell Protoform PFRX
- GRP Revo S4 tyres

Other than that, kit!

my first thought at seeing them last weekend was that its like largescale, but at a fraction of the cost, could buy 2 RX setups for the cost of 1 engine LOL

Dan is in the process of converting a RB One buggy he bought new for peanuts, he's going to post up some pics of his progress with the conversion.

Good to hear you're getting sorted !!!

Re the lipo's .. there's no issue using softcase, we checked with BRCA and doesn't affect insurance or anything ..

There's a link at the beginning of the thread to the one's we've been using and they work well, there's also cheap Floureon lipo's on ebay which some have used and they seem fine, you don't need massive run time ... 3000 plus is all you need for our sprint races, although more mah = more punch

tonydevon
26-07-2016, 02:20 PM
thought I share this, its slightly shorter wheelbase, Im hoping that I can just manipulate the arches LOL

from my research the WR8 is 300mm wheelbase

most the cars seem to be 320 330?

but for £18 quid I thought it worth a gamble

found the ken bloc one but at £40 I wasnt prepared to gable that much LOL

my shell should be here next couple of days, will see how it sits over the RC8e buggy Im converting, then its time to look at mounts, sticky back plastic, and washing up liquid bottles at the ready :)

tonydevon

ah... ok, best open the bin then LOL

just wanted to try and avoid having a shell like the basher same as others

just seen the width difference, blimey, ypu thats £20 odd quid in the bin LOL

looks like I be ordering from hobbyking asap :(

Dombrasky
27-07-2016, 07:08 AM
As in previous posts the only decent shell that fits is the protoform, unless you import from the Italian sites mentioned... the ken block will not fit either :(
its suprising how you can make the same shell look different.. mine Dans and the one used in the link are the same shell

tonydevon
27-07-2016, 07:14 AM
yeah should have read properly and checked LOL,

have ordered another shell now.

BSR basher shell on its way, will just do something to it to make it stand out from the rest, knowing me I be trying to control the wrong car LOL

plan is to cut down and stick a nice L plate on the roof LOL LOL

maybe on the chassis too, probably spend most time upside down

Anyone got any pics or tips for bodymount setup when converting a buggy.

Think a front foam bumper setup be good too.

body mounts are rather.. hmmm how can I put it, over engineered LOL, only offcuts of ally I could find in the scrap bin LOL

will lighten and then anodise them later :)

had a play round carpark and love the way these handle, awesome fun hanging it out sideways and sliding it around, never driven 4wd cars before, good laugh,

Its ready for the weekend. Feel free to have a go.
Its a lovely car. Ebay bargain.
Its the better version with lots of alloy parts.
Came with xerun brushless setup and ezrun setup. Loads of tyres spares oils etc.

Been well looked after. 135 quid.
Shell 25 quid
Battery 25 quid.
So for 185 quid im ready to rock n roll and crash lol

Ive gone pretty simple setup.
-1 camber all round
Suspension setup feels nice lol.

Only managed to play round car park.

Not sure how much timing to run on the motor. Have to see how it compares to the others on the straight.

Looks mega that Tony!

Slightly chunky on the body mounts

Be prepared to order a new body shell too. The BSR shells are made out of a strange material that isn't lexan, they fall apart pretty quickly! It's about the only thing that is a bit weak on the BSR :)

Other than that, it's been a common set-up tweak to lie on the shocks right down, just like a touring car. Perhaps something worth trying on race day!

tonydevon

Cheers shell was cheap. Just to get me racing.

What about gearing and centre diff.
Ive gone 19t pinion but now hearing online of 21 and 22 in use :(

Are you locking centre diffs up

Running mild motor timing and punch. Worried it might be bit slow.

06-08-2016, 09:08 AM
Hi
you will have to see how it compares to the others for speed...depends on what the overall gearing of your RC8 is and spur size tbh, also the GRP wheels are a bit smaller than stock buggy so you need to go up 2 or 3
The BSR has a solid centre diff std, but some of the hobaos are locking theres with hot glue or blue tack ive heard

What a meeting yesterday! The final was a text book rally cross race, any of us could of had the win between the top 4! The joker laps played into it perfectly.

My RB convert was going better towards the end, hopefully shows you can buy an affordable buggy and convert it quite easily. I'll get some photos up soon to show how I've converted it.

Yours looked pretty good for first time out ... its amazing what difference changing diff oils can make ... 5000 in the back and 20,000 up front is a good starting place ...

Body choice isn't great from UK shops TBH ..

18th September

Some of you might have seen me playing around with this on the onroad track over the last couple of months ...

and at the weekend of the 4wd regionals there was a LOT of interest in the car.... and several guys talking of buying cars and running some Rallycross RX style meetings using a shortened version of the the onroad track.

So I thought I'd share some links for cars, tyres motors etc .. and see if we can get this off the ground !!

Evening all,

Just a quick update for you guys as there seems to be a mistake on the championship dates....

Round 6 - 21st August

Round 7 - 4th September - Final round with trophy presentation.

The weekend previously advertised for the final round (18th Sept) is the Mendip Masters of the Astroturf weekend and will only have pre paid entries for 2wd and 4wd 1/10 off road classes.

Apologies for the mix up.

them BSR shells are cheap and ideal, think they about 21 quid all ready to go

but I would look at lining it with gaffer tape or similar for winter, no idea what they made from but its not polycarb, they will shatter and snap, no idea how they will take a knock in the cold winter

Im about to order the painted associated one, £58 :(

mrspeedy
30-08-2016, 07:59 PM
yeah the Associated bodies are not cheap, but I must say I've beat the hell out of my AE body this summer and it still looks really good !! Its worth lining the front wings and bumper edges with spare polycarb and shoe goo to proling its life ...

If anyone is after slightly more realistic and up to date bodyshell, then take a close look at the Vaterra Fiesta body.

Width is quoted as 296mm .. and wheelbase 333mm so check your chassis will fit first !!

But looks pretty close to most chassis sizes ..

Wheelspin and Modelsport have them in stock .. wing is extra mind !!

Vaterra shell is good quality and it fits tight to the bumper so doesn't tend to crack , 205 shell is a Delta one it looks even better in the flesh also fits tight to the bumper . We have taken our inspiration from you Mendip guys it looked so much fun we gave it a go and its awesome ! We have just started running joker laps and the result is EVEN MORE FUN !!!! we run for 5 minutes with 2 jokers first race 4 in the second and 6 in the next 2 the resulting gap fluctuation is amazing but we all end up on the same lap by the end? You have really found something here that's both fun and really competitive and relatively cheap. Hope you don't mind me posting on here but I have the feeling we wont be the only club following your lead . Cheers Andrew.

Just to share a small tip. If your car started out like mine did as a buggy then refit the buggy shell with velcro. Rally shell over the top.

I have been out hammering mine round the carpark at lunch. Pouring rain.
Huge fun now the diffs are sorted.
S4 dont work as well in wet lol.
But inside the inner shell is dry and clean :)

Awesome !!! can't wait to run rallycross over the winter

and for anyone wanting to run in rallycross this winter .. we'll be running the same spec tyre we have run all year which is the GRP S4 tyre available from RC Octane on site ...

Hopefully we'll also have some polycarbonate underbodies for sale to keep everything dry and cosy inside just in case we get a drop of rain !!!

tonydevon
20-10-2016, 03:26 PM
what tyres for wet races??

waiting for new bodyshell, paint, some bumpers and bodymounts to arrive, 44T spur also on order to try and get the gearing back to sensible ratio

if anyone has an RC8e to convert to rally cross, then I am pretty sure that the mounts and bumpers from the associated qualifier pro rally will fit

will confirm soon as the parts arrive

mrspeedy
20-10-2016, 10:08 PM
For the moment, the GRP S4 is the tyre we'll be running wet or dry, same for all

I know there are wet tyres available from GRP, RC Octane has them in stock.

But we need to test them before we allow them to be used. What we don't want to get into, is tyres that wear out fast so that you need a new set every meeting, that would go against the principles of the class being cheap to run.

But we'll see, its all open for discussion

BTW .... first round of Rallycross is this weekend :woot::woot::woot::woot:

Hi Andrew .. you are indeed a VERY lucky chap :woot::woot:

We are all HUGE fans of Rallycross RX and all follow it over on Quest

When we set the class up earlier this year our aim was to copy as close as possible the full sized version ... so we run sprint races for points, joker laps, spec tyres and no tyre warming so the first couple of laps is interesting !!!

Great to hear you follow us .. our FB page is here - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1153985884640239/1178802518825242/?notif_t=group_activity&notif_id=1478114543313837

We've had some great racing this year in Rallycross, and numbers are way beyond anything we could have expected and I have to say the racing has been out of this world .. and all the guys supporting us in this class have been great ... congrats to you all and thanks for coming along ..

So serious bit ... generally our rules have been loose ... kinda clubmans rules really ... and to be honest we don't really need many to make it work in Rallycross... The only one we really want to stick with, is tyres !!! So as of Jan 2017, GRP S4 compound tyres will be the only tyre allowed to be used for the championship. These as you all know are available trackside from RcOctane at approx £33 a set.
The only other addition to that is that we will all need to be running hardcase lipos as of April.

As above, we would just like to reiterate that the control tyre for this class is the GRP Revo S4. We've seen some people go quickly on other tyres so we would like to keep the class as close as possible

TV deals for WorldRX to be renegotiated/announced over winter ; ) We get lots of feedback re quest not being HD, so fingers crossed an upgrade soon.

I'm on FB and Twitter if you ever want to ask anything, happy to pop on here occasionally too though don't want to clutter up your forum section with my ramblings!

Last of the 3 leg A final from our Summer Rallycross GP ..

Reverse grid mixed it up a bit !!

Probably one of our best track layouts .. fast cars, jumps, astro and loose tarmac .. whats not to love about Rallycross :woot::woot:
