Can shock oil go off?

Just finishing up my cars for the weekend and rebuilt my 2wd shocks, the rear have new losi 30wt oil, as in a brand new bottle and feel good. The fronts have been built with old oil, fresh but in an old bottle and feel crap, am i missing something here? When i built them with 35wt from a new bottle they feel awesome but with 40wt, which is prob about a year old their rubbish. :eh?:

you sure you didn't use baby johnsons or homebrand? :woot: Most good brands should be fine as they usually say they don't thicken or thin under cold or hot conditions on the bottle so should be ok if it was fresh and sealed in the bottle... you could have built them wrong? If your still unsure just redo the shocks again with new oil if they really do feel bad so then you can be 100% sure whether it's the oil or just you :D

never had oil go off southwell but it was doffo thicker last week in the cold:eh?:. Took the car inside and shocks went softer.
Some of my oils were bloody old too!!

Shock oil does go thicker in the cold despite what it says on the bottle.

It didn't seem thick or thin like ive seen some oil, just feels wierd lol. I know ive built them right :p They feel exactly the same each side....:cry:
Losi shocks are impossible to build badly, they always built exactly right each time i do it so i dunno, guess ill just get some new oil and try it, just seemed strange.

I don't think silicone oil can go off really, it should only change if it gets contaminated....

And there is not a fluid in the world that does not thin out when hotter and thicken up when cold - not possible. Silicone oil does it - fact. What is written on the bottles is a lie.

why do they write that on the bottle? :eh?: Does that not breach the products description :confused:

I think some oil is just more resiliant to thinning or thickening. Ive personally only really had major problems with Schumacher oil.

It isn't, trust me. I used to work at a company that made viscometers, and we had to calibrate them in a temperature controlled room using the most expensive calibrated silicone oils you can buy. You could easily see a change if the temperature altered half a degree.

I don't think it degrades so to speak. We had to change our calibration oils yearly due to contamination really. That and it was esier to buy new stuff with a cal cert than try and check what you had was still the same as it was a year previously.

I measured a few bottles of oil while I was there, and the only difference I found was that I had 1 or 2 wrongly labelled bottles of one manufacturers oil :o:o

BTW, I use Losi oil now ;)

Erm, well it seems like it was something else making them feel bad, namely the screws that hold the wheels on had slightly loosened slightly when i put the wheels on making it feel like the shock was binding, very strange. :lol:
