might be a stupid question but what have they changed?
they changed the gearbox would that need a new car to do that?

Its X-ray - so yes. absolute joke if you ask me, has to be something else substantial to justify it.

think they got this wrong xray as 2017 car got new gearbox doesnt make any sense to me.....
i bought a xb2 as soon as they came out but i regert selling my carbon RB6
setup up took bit of work because the base setup in the manual was quite far out. once setup was very good car but would i have then bought a 2017 no way because i spent my money on a all round car Rb6.6 every gearbox one car prob cost me more than 2 cars but i have the wear on one chassis and my 2 shiny shells... think the whole 2 car thing maybe getting out of hand as people are being priced out which doesnt effect me i am lucky but its a ture fact

It does make sense, because it looks like the new car has a 3 gear laydown to give more forward traction and less rear grip. I don't know about your Xb2 but I have had to work hard to get the car to turn in as fast as I want it to. I had to buy the brass kick up, optional Ackerman, and change setup quite a bit, i.e. completely remove rear toe, take out the elevation in the front casters. To be honest it still doesn't turn in as fast as I'd like it to, that said I do love it. Is it worth spending £300 on another kit, I think so just because I love building kits! :)

my point is why not just buy a gearbox?

For sure, you can just buy a new gearbox and retro fit to the '16 car. This is what I will do. If there are more changes (which there is not in this case to my understanding) then I welcome new cars - this is innovation so then we as racers have the choice to buy the new cars and innovation or stick with our older cars. Not sure why people get bent out of shape over innovation, this really baffles me.

I think I'll get the 17 model when it's released. My 2016 XB2 has been the best car I've ever owned and I'll be keeping it as my lower traction car. Doesn't the 2017 car have a new diff? Potentially you may need to buy the gear cases, idler, diff and anything else that's needed to make it work. Not sure if anything else has changed??

Diffs were still exploding at EOS, ask Paul Cropton. the 2017 car is the same as the 2016 car except that the rear gearbox is 3 gear, not 4 gear.
The new dirt car is some time off.

Going to be honest I never had any issue with my Geardiff or ball diff I did get my hand in my pocket for steel gears & pins though reacher than kit plastic

This is excactly how stupid rumours get started by people that don't know s**t.
If Paul's diff is "exploding" I'll gladly teach him how to build a diff.......sounds like he could use a little help.
We tried some different weights in the XB2 diff but settled on 15K due to the silly tire wear of the new MiniPin1 tires......and it worked awesome.
As far as I know, after talking to all of them, none of the Team Drivers had diff issues. And that includes Bruno C., Martin B., Martin W., Hupo H., Nico N., Joel V., Kaja N., Milan M., Max G. and us.
But maybe you know something that none of us drivers know of....... :wtf:

While I value your clarification on the gearbox issues, I don't agree with "well said". TBH Bent's reply put me more off than an "exploding" diff could have done. I don't know if Bent and Neal have history or not, but as a rare guest in the xray forums I must admit I am a little shocked.
IMHO a new car due to a new gearbox does make sense indeed. While nobody has to buy the full kit if he or she already has the '16 version, it would be annoying for a new customer having to buy the old version and the new parts to get to bring it to the current level and thus spend more than necessary.
Further to the issues not experienced by the team: In my experience, average drivers often suffer damage where pro drivers don't. I've seen plenty Durangos and TeamCs fail in the hands of mere mortals while the likes of Jörn Neumann have finished their meeting on the very same track and day without any problems. As I am not that skilled, I tend to bulletproof most of my kits with titanium turnbuckles, aluminium parts and the like. Any (valid) failure reports on forums are valuable when it comes to choosing a new kit.

Paul told me his diff broke when I asked about how his finals went. That's all I know.
Local club racers I speak with have also had issues with the diff design, and I've seen calls for a revision to seal it properly as it likes to leak oil, and also chew plastic gears. I'll leave it there, as I don't run the car, so can't comment any further.
Bent, don't attack me personally. Speaking of self proclaimed ex-spurts, Remember back a few meetings ago, you were the one who told me the barking/slipping ball diff noise I was hearing "was a combination of the motor and slipper clutch", when you knew fair well that it was a slipping ball diff. Quite why you were running a ball diff on such high traction carpet was clearly masking another issue? I smelled bull-sh*t then, and you were trying to cover up a badly performing or setup car, when there was really no need to.
I realise you are defending your product and team, but sometimes issues happen, be honest about it, and you learn and move on. Automatic defence and a failure to understand consumer's issue with a product, creates suspicion and doubt, which people will then perceive as a negative, and maybe the rumours become truth? Stupid rumours get started when the company doesn't listen to the people having the issues, blaming them, not the product... And by the way, I haven't started any rumours.
I agree with you on the tyre wear, and I saw this coming based on how they wear back home, compared with originals.
This last weekend saw some fantastic performances from xray team drivers, Hupo, Joel, Kaja, and others up to the usual tricks ;-)

We don't have a "history" other than him coming on the Xray threads to spread false rumors.
He knows all to well that none of the drivers had problems with "exploding" diffs at the EOS........so why come on here and report problems that don't exist ?!?!?
Oh wait......he's a Yokomo fan boy
I helped out a ton of Xray drivers at the EOS with setup and not a single one had diff issues.
On the other hand the YZ4 is going through idler gears like they were made of crackers.
Dont't see Neal mentioning that do you :lol:
If you come on another brands thread to spread false info you can only expect to be treated accordingly.
Or do you think he should be entitled to spread whatever rumors he finds to his liking
Nuff said.......
Bent
No Mes, we haven't, I've always had the greatest respect for Bent and what's doing with his talented daughter.
I'd always said he was a nice person when local xray customers had been attacked or had had a heated discussion with him for raising an issue or question about their product, and had asked me about him as they knew I'd met him personally.
I'm no yokomo fan boy, no more than Bent is of xray. I pay my money for stuff I like. I've played the xray "luxury price tag" game, and won't be going back, certainly not now, despite the new XB4 being a fantastic performing car.
Remember bent, i'm not the one advertising and working for a brand in a public forum. Your comments and personal attacks do reflect on the xray brand.

You haven't started any rumors by clearly stating that Xray have a problem with exploding gear diffs  Come on.......get real.
If you are referring to us running the ball diff at the last round of the EOS in April......yes we were running it as Malin always prefers the ball diff over the gear diff.......but in that one heat I put the ball diff in the wrong way and with all the hard braking it worked itself loose and Malin had a very rare DNF.
Was that any fault of the ball diff ? No, only a mistake by myself changing diff 2 minutes before her heat started and failing to do my job properly.
And yes we always run a ball diff if the track is not too tight.
If it is filled with 180's we run a gear diff as the ball diff limits rotation.
And no......the gear diff doesn't leak if you build it correctly.
As in soaking the the orings in silicone oil before assembly and NOT covering them in grease (which will hinder the orings swelling and sealing properly).
2 mistakes commonly made building the gear diff is;
Over tightening the 2.5 mm screws allowing the diff house to expand and leak oil as well as ruin the mesh of the satellite and planet gears.
Covering the orings in grease stopping them from swelling and keeping the diff leak free.
Stupid rumors get started by people like you not knowing what you are on about.
And yes I consider myself an "expert" on the XB2 as we have been involved since day one running all the different layouts, materials and printed parts.
At the most we've had 4 different cars running simultaneously to compare setups, layouts and materials.
I am a nice person :)
I just don't tolerate people spreading false information and then trying to defend it when called out.
I help 10-15 Xray drivers each and every day with issues, setups and what to order and where.
I don't have any I ssues with 990 out 1000 users........but you always have those that can not or won't be helped or just want to argue for the sake of arguing.
My knowledge is based on first hand use and development of the product and direct feedback from hundreds of users, yours on the other hand is based on hearsay.
And yet you are the one with exclusive rights on reporting "problems"........problems that don't exist.
And if you feel I'm attacking you maybe you should stop spreading hearsay and starting rumors ?
If not then yes I will keep calling you out on it.
Grow up Neal :)
Maybe we should discuss how the YZ4 drivers are using AE idler gears to keep them from stripping constantly instead ?!?!?!
Bent
i must say i have owned a Xb2 and i had no gearbox issues ever i just didnt rush putting it together...

Grow the f*** up Neal and go back to the Yokomo threads.
Bent
It's public forum, like I said, think about what you say online.
I am afraid these posts are as "entertaining" as the bashing going on between Microsoft and Sony console gamers. I am a huge (non-sponsored) Yokomo fan, but have had kits by most manufacturers out there including Xray. I had actually contemplated buying the XT2, but now I may have to get a ton of idler gears for my YZ-4 instead...
Guys, we are all playing with expensive toy cars. At some point all manufacturers come to a point where there are some issues to be solved. So far I have been lucky with idler gears in all my cars except for the B5M with Redworkshop's LR gearbox where others had issues in their B-Max2s, Firebolts and RB/T6s, and now the YZ-4 as it seems; maybe this is down to my gentle trigger finger or the use of dryfluid, I don't know.
As long as the manufacturers fix their problems before long, I think it's part of the kits' evolution process. Xray had weak shock towers on their early XB4s, Yokomo had too hard outdrives on their first B-Max2. Both fixed these problems before most drivers ever noticed them.
I watched the first 2WD A-Final at the Nürburgring last Saturday and was happy for Marc Rheinard (I know him from our track and his brother's store) when Martin Wollanka rolled over and Marc took the lead again. When Lee Martin pulled his last turn move, I was excited, but even more so when I saw that Xray's Bruno Coelho was the first to congratulate him afterwards. If these guys, who earn their living on the track, manage to play nice in such a situation, why does it seem so hard to respect each other on one of the last few proper forums? Enjoy your hobby, I am done here. Over and out.

That's my car! Crash caused due to servo failure and then impact with a large, immovable radiator. Net result, 1 lost final and £12 worth of parts to replace. Thankfully the diff survives and is still going strong.
However if Bent and his friends at XRay would like to send me a 2017 car, I'll gladly test it out under the same rigorous regime!

It is just too much bad press and totally unprofessional. I'm surprised X-ray haven't sacked someone for consistent hassling of customers and prospective customers. it just looks bad. Your behaviour tonight looks bad on you your family, X-ray and rc in general.
i wouldn't want to go somewhere where i thought people were going to fight over toy cars!!!
The Eos is xrays premier arena to show how good their products and drivers are. Yet on a public forum a Premier driver who is often in the press is threatening to assault a member of the public at the next event!!! Can you imagine if Red Rc took picks of this or published the story!!!

Oh......Neal is no pospective customer as all he does is go out of his way to spread false information about a brand and group of drives he's clearly stated he doesn't like.
And I stand by every comment I make :)
Bent
Bent seriously you don't know how wrong you are.
Anyone who knows me knows I buy RC kits and stuff for fun, and lots of it. I recently drove an XB4 round my local track and was very impressed how it had come on since my first experience with the original XB4. I was actually going to buy one to have a play with for next season, but I'm now not so sure. Remember I buy my stuff, not get it for free. Plus you are not just representing Xray, but Malin's other sponsors, Hudy, Orca, jconcepts, rcmart, etc, all of which I've had product from in the past.
You really have got the wrong end of the stick here with this thread. I may have got it wrong about which car the diff or idler was broken in, xb2/xb4 whichever, something broke on one or both, it's racing, things break. - That's by the by now, your reaction to this with personal attacks and threats I do take issue with, and I have captured screen shots as I was advised to. It's an open forum, anyone can contribute anything to the discussion, good, bad, controversial or humorous.
I'm unsure why you think I have stated I do not like xray drivers or brand? I have in no way gone about spreading false information. Quite the opposite, I've had many many club level xray drivers and potential xray customers asking me to get some snippets of information the upcoming cars as I was attending this big event. They were itching to find out about the new cars. I was asked to get photos, and I asked you if I could take photos, but you politely declined, which was fine. I was also asked to get information on the new AE 4wd, serpent, yokomo and schumacher, which I did where I could. This isn't a bad thing, its what the sponsors are paying for, and what the event is for. The EOS events are a spectacle and the eyes of the RC world are on the the pictures and videos that are created. People want to know what they will be spending their money on to race later in the year, or they want to get a bit of inside knowledge on how to make their cars perform like the pros.
And drivers? I've had some good chats with a number of the xray team drivers many of which I've known from before they drove for xray, and I have much respect for the talents of world champ Coelho, and the formidable design team of Bayer and Hudy. I've congratulated other team drivers on their performances this last weekend, as I have in the past with Malin. This is a hobby I enjoy to participate in, no matter which brand someone represents, even at my not so talented driving level. I was also very much looking forward to a future visit to the legendary Hudy arena and to take a factory and track tour. I now fear the Slovakian mafia may want to have words with me if i go ;-)
You are right with one point, I'm just an idiot self proclaimed expert sitting on my PC online who can make any statement he wishes. I'm not however a brand ambassador for any brand, I'm just a paying customer making choices to spend my money where I wish to, and at a club level can recommend to others where to spend theirs.
RC racing is meant to be fun and enjoyable. A bit of healthy competition and the odd part failure drives it forward through development and setup improvements. Now I do see the xray team throwing out t-shirts so everyone is on brand message, but what I also see is anyone struggling with their product or asking a question getting shouted down publicly (as I have been here) for suggesting there could ever be anything wrong. I also wonder why there are no top (10) UK or US 1/10th off-road drivers representing xray, given they are massive markets?
I know you won't want to leave this here, but I will.

Not great behaviour by a brand ambassador, no wonder they get banned from various forums/FB groups

Holy cow, two grown up men arguing about (racing) toy cars. Well done both of you :bored:
Grow up, drink a beer at the next EOS together and remember we are all playing with toy cars, nothing more than that.
Have fun and enjoy this hobby.
About the XB2 2017: The 2016 is a good car so I hope they won't make it better :p

So apart from the gearbox change, from 4 gear to 3 gear, is there any other changes to the car?
Cheers

I have an XB2 and an Xb4 - and have waited / watched with interest re the new car.
I'm surprised that the new car's 3 Gear transmission is so much better - in the years of development and testing - why didn't a 3 gear tranny come to the fore - seems really odd if it's such a noticeable improvement?
Oh - and reading through the thread - Bent - regardless of who is right and who is wrong - you do come across as an aggressive Dick - doesn't help that you look like Phil Mitchell :)

But for more bumpy/medium grip astro tracks you'd go back to 4 gear? Or stay with the 3?

Will the new car come with any of the softer plastics for when the grip does go down a bit? Also what's changed with the gear diff and will the 16 ball and gear diff fit in the 17?

they tried to get a stadium truck heat going for the short course nationals, but only one person entered most of the time. apart from at coventry - there were 5 or 6 there.

Can the new gearbox be fitted to the 16 model Bent?. If so,is it just the new 36t gear that's needed?.

What changes do you need to do to the 17 car to run on wet greasy Astro? There is an option to buy a 2016 dirt edition car and wondered if this would be a good option for a wet car?

The '17 CE car will be even worst on wet astro than the '16 CE car. You need the dirt car for this. Seems many run the carbon chassis with the dirt car to improve overall grip on low grip tracks.

Ok cheers, one more question, are the X Ray wheels the same offset as Schumacher wheels? I have a load of Schumacher wheels and wouldn't want them to go to waste.

I've been looking at getting a new 2wd after been out of racing but why is this car so much more than b6 or 22 3.0 is it really that much different to the others I assume it must have more alloy and carbon than the cheaper ones? Although saying that after reading this whole thread I'm not sure xray is the brand for me :eh?:

I had the same decision to make a couple of months ago. After some considerable research I came to the conclusion the x-ray does not offer more for your money compared to a B6. If we're talking raw materials at component level they have equal amounts of composite, carbon and alloy. The pompous website and attitudes on display in this thread swayed me to the B6.

We tried some different weights in the XB2 diff but settled on 15K due to the silly tire wear of the new MiniPin1 tires......and it worked awesome.
Bent
Hi Bent, pretty new to off road but loving the xb2. When running the 15k was there any changes made to the diff ? Many thanks Lee

I know this has almost certainly been covered a dozen time elsewhere but can't find it. Can someone tell me if X-ray do a narrow front wheel suitable for Schumacher stagger rib front tires. If not what's the best alterative? Thanks for any help.

Just purchased a xb2 '17 , can't wait to get it on the track! Coming from the old xb4 2wd.
Wanted to ask about the kit set up and Schumacher low profile cut staggers. Is the kit set up designed around this tyre or will I need to lower the front spindle height / add more front droop to accommodate the low profile tyre design?
Thanks

Set it up as kit. I ran mine about 17-18mm ride height and found it was better with the ball diff in it.
