Hi all,

For those who are interested I will be doing a strip, clean and restore of a Vintage RPM RC10 WHITE ULTRA MOLD.

Been after one of these for a few years in white, have seen a couple of dyed black and washed out red but never seen a Original all white.

Until NOW !! :woot:

For those who are un-sure of this beast. RPM released the conversion for the RC10 and had the WORLDS 91 front and rear end with RPM MOLDED Chassis. The front and rear was used at the Detroit 91 WORLDS by the TEAM DRIVERS.

Release in WHITE dye able. Many have were dyed in many colours.

I will need to seek what body actually fits it, looking at possible Losi xx ish but if anyone knows please let me know.

Also I believe this was released as a kit in 1992 call the HYBRID and included the best parts of the RC10 TEAM, TRAXXAS TRX-1 and RPM PARTS.

Parts used was,

RC10 STEALTH GEARBOX
TRAXXAS SHOCKS
RPM WORLDS FRONT,REAR AND CHASSIS.

So as soon as it lands here in the UK I will post pictures and start the restore/clean up.......

Hi Daz,

This is not Tekin matey, Its RPM. The Tekin conversion was a black mid motor conversion for the tub RC10s.

But yes these are very very rare. Its taken me over 2 yrs to get a all white RPM ULTRA.

Nice one Mark.....

Be careful - by all accounts the white RPM parts don't 'whiten' in peroxide like the Associated white parts do - they tend to turn brown instead

Yes; It was Top Models that assembled the kit of parts & retailed them.

I think the RPM chassis was designed to utilise the Losi Pro SE body?

It always confuses me why RPM called it the 'Worlds' conversion in their literature, claiming that it was used by the Associated team drivers? In 91 the top AE drivers (Masami, Cliff Lett, Kinwald etc) at Detroit were running the prototype Stealth cars that has been recently been replicated as the 'NIX91' kit - perhaps other drivers were using the RPM parts on their cars?

Yes your 100% rite about the 91 worlds. Even when RPM originally released the front and rear end it was called the worlds for the RC10 TEAM CAR where you had the template to cut the rear end . Strange but maybe like you stated other Associated drivers used it and parts ?

Welshy40
01-12-2016, 05:13 PM
I think the a team drivers used the proto, and the rest used standard or modded cars like this. I think someone did run a proto version of this at the worlds but cant for the life of me remember who.

So today I have taken delivery of the RPM ULTRA MOLD RC10.

Its a lot better than I thought. I have taken pictures so you can see the RPM ULTRA MOLD as I have received it.

The marks on the ULTRA MOLD on the servo area and battery strap was a slight concern when purchasing it. Was it deep scratches/grooves where the owner had tried to remove the double sided tape glue ?

So I have just spent over an hour cleaning the battery strap and at first wondered what it was. At first I thought it was glue from the double sided tape. Well it was, but !! thankfully the original owner had fitted cello tape on the strap first, then the double sided tape for speedo and receiver.

So once I had the cello tape removed, it was a case of removing the glue from the cello tape off the strap. Remember this is almost 24 yrs old glue  It was almost like super glue.......

But !! its all off now and looking near mint. If the rest of the ULTRA MOLD goes as good as the battery strap, its gonna be HAPPY DAYS !!!!

Delivery Pics coming now......

Well have managed to strip the RPM ULTRA complete now. I have been cleaning the parts and have to say its coming up like new. The hardest part is to clean the black grime from the hinge pin holes and get them like new. But have managed to do this.

The chassis has come out I feel almost like new. All the glue marks gone.

I will post pics of the cleaned up parts shortly for all to see......

Oh and my pet hate !!! odd coloured wheels removed.......

So from the first post. I was wondering which body would fit this. As all RC10 vipers, mirage and turbo mirage would fit but with gaps, I wanted a proper fit to the chassis without gaps.

So after some research and google searching. I only had to look on the back of the instructions....:blush:

It states !! ANY LOSI SE BODY !! So Dan the MAN you was right.....

Also a myth that has bothered me for years. Back in the day, it was said that ALL RPM products were guaranteed against breakage. I never actually seen this in any product I bought and I had the worlds front and rear on my RC10 TEAM CAR.

So were they or were they not !!

Well I can now put this myth of nearly 25yrs behind me.

YES !! RPM products were/are guaranteed against breakage. It states on the instruction sheet ALL PRODUCTS GAURANTEED AGAINST BREAKAGE. JUST SEND THE PART BACK IF IT BREAKS AND IT WILL BE REPLACED.

Awesome I say.... Wonder how many offer this today ???

Had some time today to do a little more work on the RPM.

Managed to file down the rear part of the motor plate, clean the vintage RPM turn buckle ends (GREY) and polish up the Tecnacraft turnbuckles, clean the original shock bushings these were a pain but came up like new.

The rear bumper was slightly out of shape but a very slight tweak in a vice soon sorted this. There was also very slight marks on it so decided to spray it black and it came out very well. I also filed the edges just to take the black off then polished up.....

I managed to paint this on Friday and now tonight fitted it to the RPM.....

The gearbox brace came out very well too.

Cleaned up the rear RPM hubs, same as the other parts. The hinge pin holes were a pain but came up like new.

The original Driveshafts came out very well. I have ordered new what Associated call (foamy things) new white foam pads for all the ballstuds. Will fit these then start to clean up the RC10 side of the ULTRA RPM.

I also managed to win an original RPM STEALTH gearbox from the USA. So as soon as this bad boy turns up it will be stripped, cleaned and fitted.

White (foamy things) to the ball studs.
Shock screws with new original nuts and washers and original shock bushings.

You will also notice the RPM white spacer fitted to the rear outer hinge pin. The hinge pin is taken from the RC10 TEAM car, so was to long. This spacer was included to take up the gap.......

So had the Original RPM gearbox complete come today.....

After some research on this gearbox, its apparent that the RPM box was made for the RC10T and also fitted to the standard rear end RC10s.

It was not made to fit in the narrow rear ended RC10 worlds/RPM ULTRA MOLD without very slight modification.

So again, after research for what modification had to be done, I found 2 modifications.

1. Dremel the complete lower side around the hinge pin/toe block of each side of the case.

2. Dremel/cut the hinge pin holder/toe block and a very slight Dremel on each corner of the case both sides.

So after some thought, I went for the 2nd of the two.

I trimmed with a very TWITCHY BUMHOLE the hinge pin holders and the corners of the case. It has taken me best part of 4hrs to complete this as the price of the RPM gearbox and none in the whole world of RPM parts the rear hangers did I want to mess this up.

But its complete and fits like a glove YEAH BABY !!! Relief......:)

I will post pics tomorrow of this complete and the small 4hr mods I did.....

This one I will keep... The others I have completed can be repeated.

This one, I have never seen another like this. Either dyed or parts missing. Or not complete RPM. This is complete RPM and white.

This one wont be going anywhere like the others have......:thumbsup:

Bit of a random question but do you guys insure your collections

xfactor
08-01-2017, 08:05 PM
Yes,

I have a separate cover for them. I also have a high limit too.

When I insured mine, I had them come round to see what I was talking about and list the buggies.

I also included my radio as well. I also phone them to update.....

Just an update.

I will be collecting the body tomorrow from Penguin Custom Body Shells.

I will be going for the RPM stated body shell the Losi PRO-SE.

I have decided to paint the body in Cliff Lett colours. This will be Metallic Blue, Chrome/Silver strips and Orange. It will have the block stripe orange down the bonnet edged in chrome/silver with the famous MOo also on the bonnet, sides, roof and widows.

I have original stickers to fit as well. Once finished I will post pictures.

I have also sent RPM some pictures of the RPM ULTRA MOLD and they are very impressed with it and have requested finished body on pictures.

No pressure for the body to be perfect as Cliff Lett is a good friend of theres......:woot:

I will post pictures tomorrow of what I collect........

Cheers Retro,

Mmm Only speculation and guessing, if RPM was to re-re this which I very much doubt, I think it would be black.

The reason I say this, the RC10 TEAM wishbones they have rereleased are black. But then again the re-re RC10 Worlds gear cover is white. All be it a totally different white and shape so who knows.

All I know is, this is all original with all the RPM paperwork to go with it !! ......:thumbsup:

So been over to Mr Penguin Custom Body Shells and picked up the Losi PRO-SE body.

Again excellent quality and includes a V-Wing. I will not use the Losi V-wing, I will use the Associated RC10 wing.

I also picked up an original RPM gear cover today for the RPM. Thank you to JayST. I will post pictures of this tomorrow.....

I will be masking up the body tonight and weather permitting will paint the body tomorrow. Once painted I will post pictures also.......

So a little up-date,

Wing installed and stickered up, new Associated tear drop wing buttons installed with new wire. Original RPM gear cover fitted.

Rain has stopped play with the body shell, as I paint all my shells in the garage.

So will wait for the weather to pick up a little or at least dry up. Maybe a long wait......:lol:

He he, superb!! I was after something from MIP and ended up emailing Eustace (if memory serves me correctly) himself, really nice (i know not rpm but cs are exceptional in the us) and youll probably get a nice reply back from RPM as their customer services are superb, dont forget rc in the US is a billion dollar industry compared to our 100 grand industry. Its possible they have a massive call centre just like Tower Hobbies do, didnt believe it until I saw a picture, its insane.

Stunning as ever Mark!

It looks great with that body/paint scheme against all the white RPM parts... off road buggies just don't this good anymore!

Out of interest - how did you clean all the white parts in the end... the usual washing-up liquid & a toothbrush?

xfactor
27-01-2017, 08:11 PM
Thanks lads for all the kind comments......:thumbsup:

Dan,

Yes just washing up liquid. Pour washing up liquid into plastic tub. Pour boiling hot water into the tub. I then smudge washing up liquid onto the parts neat. Give good rub with fingers. Then put the parts into the tub.

Leave over night soaking.

Remove next day, then more washing up liquid onto the parts. I use tooth brush to rub over the parts. Tooth pic in hinge pin holes, Then rinse with cold water.

WHAM BAM, Have it !!! WHITE BITS..........:thumbsup:

Awesome, I had the 91 worlds conversion on my tub rc10. Funny that I had the fluorescent pink tub but kept the plastic white.:woot:

Totally agree, the RPM front and rear totally transformed the rc10 tub as well.
