Hi, new member here. Just discovered this site. I was hoping to find a little help and advice. Im mainly interested in 1/10th off road buggies. I currently have an old predator international, re release optima and waiting for delivery of the re release cat xls.
I havent got a clue about modern electrics. Last time i went racing was with nicad sces and brushed motors.
can anyone offer advice. Ive bought an absima duo lipo charger but not got a clue about modern esc and motors or lipos

Hello and welcome!
You might get a better response on Electrics section but anyway...
Modern electrics are amazing...no brushes, no comm skimming, no issues with run time, no battery memory etc
Lipos need charging properly. Lots of horror stories but nothing to be 'scared' of; just follow general guidelines and never leave unattended while charging. Buy a lipo sack for charging/storage, I keep mine in the garage but am paranoid!
You won't struggle for run time, ever, unless you buy skinny lightweight lipos. Personally I'd go for 4500 for 4WD, highest 'C' rating you can afford. Would do 10 mins on most motors in a 4WD. I use same lipos in 4WD and 2WD. You only need 2 packs unless running both classes same day....one in car, one on charge.
Motors...popular in 2WD is 7.5, in 4WD 6.5. You can go milder (higher...so 8.5 or 9,5 in 2WD will calm it all down) in either class, and you may want to if you're running vintage class as transmission may not be up to modern electrics. (look at vintage forum on here, popular)
ESC....so many available, cheap to v expensive. IMO the gap between the two is nothing like it was 20 years ago. Hobby king, speed passion etc for entry level, LRP, Orion, Reedy etc top end. Lots made in same chinese factories anyway!
Hooking them up is dead simple. Solder straight to motor these days, no connectors. Marked A B C on ESC and on motor, so impossible to get wiring wrong. Pos/Neg on Lipos, normally 4mm or 5mm bullet connectors.
Motor timing can be done on motor and ESC, be careful not to overtime as you need to add both up for figure...ie 10 degrees on motor can, 10 degrees electronic timing on ESC = 20 degrees timing.
You need to gear for temperature, not run time now. Can run fans on motor and/or ESC if you need to, which lots do on carpet indoors.
I hope that helps a little...answers can be slow on here, consider Facebook pages for products you're interested in as you may get a quicker answer. This is a brilliant forum though! Try RCtech forums as well...USA based but more active users than oople. (a few keyboard warriors about though!)
I only came back three years ago...now help run a new a successful club, we love it, all the old crew back racing again like 20 years ago!
